While not extremely important, i think the newspapers did add some nice flavour about the goings on in the world.
Adding some twists based on your ruling ideology could be nice, since a lot of newspapers were party based.
Say France invades Siam, depending on the ideology they might be civilizing them, bringing order, spreading the revolution etc. Or scorn you if the newspaper is aligned but independent.
Oh and as a QOL please make them clickable so you can go to the country, diplomacy screen, market, poptype(say a new fashion trend starts) etc.
