I think a globe or map (especially showing Europe in the center) would give a good idea of the game and would enable the use of more colors. Especially if it had some of the antique Bleau-type feel to it. I agree that once I get the game, I won't be spending much time looking at the box :) - however I suppose it will make a difference to some choosing to buy or not.
------
Hmmm ... closer inspection of the German version makes it appear as if that is a map in the background. But if the goal is to include the colors of each country, I'm interested to see how red, white, and blue are put into it.

I agree with everyone who thinhs that the German version is much more professional than the Swedish, even if it is a bit monochromatic (and it definitely has a globe in the background). The Swedish one really doesn't have that much yellow, though. But then, it's probably being used for the other Scandinavian countries too.

Thanks guys for being honest and giving both pros and cons for the covers. Me and my colleague made the new cover after sketches and directions from the company lead. I agree the old cover looks more 'serious', arty and solemn, but in the same time many people we've spoken to thinks the box is for an encyclopedia and not a game. Many others found the old cover drab and depressive and not telling the viewer what the game is about. Remember, the name E.U. is unknown to a vast majority (contrary to e.g. RISK) and the latin-sounding E.U. name makes people doubt it's a game despite its place in the games shelves.

With the new cover, we strived to communicate 'GAME!' and I believe we achieved that goal.

Bloody oath you did. I love the Swedish cover. The only way it might have been better is if you added scenes from battles, or perhaps regiments of soldiers marching, say musketeers, or cavalry. Or perhaps the progression in visual format from 1492-1792 of the dress / weaponry / style of infantry and other types of units. Mix it all in with other visual stuff like the ship at sea, colonization and so on.

Glad to see the actual artist make an appearance!

That is a valid point, and indeed you managed to give it a more 'gamey' appearance. I might have been a little harsh in my previous post, allow me to be a little more constructive:

1) The title text could use more work. IMO, it just isn't quite 'right'. Wrong font, size or color perhaps. Or perhaps you need to separate it better from the light background (with a drop shade or something).

2) Add a proper tag line that sums up the gameplay in a short sentence.

3) The artwork looks too cartoonish and bright. Darken it, make it more ominous. Perhaps switch the kneeling conquistador for something more martial.

4) If it had been up to me, I would have based the box artwork on some contemporary (17th century) battlefield painting.

Hmm, perhaps '1492-1792' like with the German cover. Or .. 'Historical Monarch simulator' or something like that.

I like the artwork, it's bright, but not too bright to push it into 'lego / candy' land. Though I agree, changing the conquistador to say musketeers would be better. Remember this game must appeal to younger people as well, not just grown ups such as yourself :) People such as yourself will find out about the game through different channels, a kid moderately interested in military history will go ..'wook mum, me wants dis gayme!'. Don't understimate the power of color when it comes to sucking up the target audience.

<sniggers>, how about Dirschau or Trzeciania? :)

Guys, we have a v2.0 of the Swedish box! Look at the box shots and spot the changes.

I think the new title makes the whole cover look MUCH nicer! Making the conquistador guy bigger was also a good decision.

For your comparison pleasure:

Yup, I think this new box is nice. I agree with the guy that said the German box looks like a Gothic RPG or something. Maybe I am not interpretting it correctly, but it just doesn't make any sense to me.

This box is nice, I think it will sell very well.

Yes, much better now that it has dates and some explanatory text. However, I think the white glow around the writing is blocking too much of the flags and buildings (at least it doesn't get much of the English flag :)).

I still think the conquistador figure looks silly...but maybe it's just me.

I like the second cover design better also.

Hmm, just curious, have you started on any design ideas for the U.S. box yet? Or U.K. or any others?

Would you care to show any of them to the 'forum faithful' here and get some feedback?

Looks much better, though I'd still prefer the conquistador in some sort of a conflict or scratch him completley an insert a battle scene / or several units of musketeers.

The box cover makes the conquistador look like a pretty little angel bowing down to earth to hand out love and kiss to the natives .. yeah right.

I also think the 2nd box is an improvement. I never was in the camp that thought the box would only appeal to kids. I do think there still could be a little more done to capture the depth of the game. When I look at the box cover, it conveys to me the exploration of the world (with the conquistador kneeling to dedicate the newly-discovered land). But it doesn't really convey war nor especially the diplomatic depth of the game. The good thing is that there's still the back of the box to do that sort of thing, I suppose.

I realy likes this cover, it may be a little to much white around the text but that is a very minor detail.

Well, we have not started any design of any other boxes at all. The German box is based on our first design that we have used in presentations for about two years. The Swedish box is made for Vision Park based on their wishes. Any other designs will probably be decided and made by the publisher in each territory.

If I may add my two cents...
The new box looks a lot better, and I don't beleive it is possible to conwey the depth of the game trough a single picture, the idea of the front is to catch a potential buyers attention so that he/she? flips the box around and reads the back which usually tell a lot more about the game....there on the flipside you somehow should show the depth of the game... :) all IMHO..
