i love playing eu3, but i started reading born to purple a byzantine AAR of eu2 and i find my self thinking either all the stuff about senators, turkish presence, spy rings is added for the story or really awesome things fazed out by eu3 arrival. i am starting to become dissapointed in eu3 as things are becoming way too unhistoric ie austia covers all of eastern europe by 1525, i as the byzantines cover all south of alps and north of african terra incognita. eu2 seems to "keep things real". either chief ragusa does a heck of a job telling a story or im missing out. could anyone give me the headsup on the differences? thanks

I think quite a lot of role-playing and artistic license has gone into making the AAR you've read. EU2 is a very simplistic game compared to Paradox's later products. There are no spies or senators. Still, it's a very enjoyable game. I can't say anything about differences between 2 and 3 because I only tried the demo for EU3 shortly, and decided it wasn't for me.

This topic has come up quite regularly since the release of EUIII.

Rather than trying to answer it again, I'll just direct you to another discussion about the issue from the EUIII forum, which includes my opinion:

http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=348269

One thing I didn't mention in that thread is that everything about EUII is known. It's all in the FAQs and all questions are quickly answered by expert veterans. The EU3 FAQs are pathetic and if you ask a question there most people just guess.

As beowulf said, Born to the Purple is one of the better AARs around and greatly expands on the gameplay.
