Did you know that, during an assault, reinforcement troops can be in a province and do not have to be part of the ongoing assault? Troops in motion in a province are not part of the assault.

As posted by Stonewall in a separate thread:

"When you press F12, the console comes up. If you then type in "info spa" you will pop up a list of what the Spanish ai is doing with regards to money. Sometimes they have no plans for spending. Often times their plans will be to send emrchants or colonists. Sometimes, the ai will be saving money for a manfactory. Also, the command gives you the amount of money in the ai country's treasury and what its estimated yearly income is. I've never been able to figure out what the 2 generals with 2 plans stuff means. I think its just the ai's troop movements, but really don't know. More importantly, by doing this little cheat, you can get a glimpse of what the ai is thinking."

"If you right click on the minimap you can get an option to overlay various unit/revolt/conquistador/leader locations on the world map. I use this to keep track of lots of explorers going in different directions."

Did you know that the ai can accept your demand in a peace deal even if it is higher than your warscore?

Here is what happened to me. My ally Austria DoWed the two-province Mantua. I conquered the second province (Venice) and Austria conquered the capital. This means a 100% WS for the alliance and I knew that if let Austria to do the peace talks then I would be awarded with Venice and the proportional part or the indemnity. I tried to figure out what kind of separate peace could I negotiate. I had a 20% warscore for controlling Venice. I demanded it for 30+ and on top of that I demanded all Mantua's money, so alltogether my demand was 40%. And my demand was accepted!
Epilogue: A couple days later Austria annexed Mantua.

When nations are in a hopeless situation typically when all their provinces are controlled by the enemy and they have little or no army left they will accept almost any deal to get rid of some enemies. Sometimes when your allies are winning a war against an enemy you never fought the enemy will offer you ducats for peace despite a 0% warscore.

Did you know that if ships are caught in a naval battle and a land battle on an island goes poorly, men can retreat to ships so long as the ships are also in retreat.

Even the slowest ships (galleys) will not be there to catch the retreating men unless the ships are split some days after the battle and then retreat again. The ships must not be in battle the day the men are to arrive on ship.

For very fast ships, the ships may retreat the sea-zone and return when the men are to be picked up. In either case of fast or slow ships, a second fleet with the needed capacity can be present in a neighboring sea-zone.

Also, sieges progress so long as there are the required number of men there at any time during a month so long as a cover force always remains. This means that cavalry or other troops can pop in and out of low supply territory and avoid attrition while also keeping a siege progressing. It is very tedious, so it is good to have as many artillery and other siege bonuses as possible to make the time for the siege shorter.

Did you know that:

Casualties are always split between troop types in the same ratio: 5 infantry per cavalry whether there is 1% or 99% cavalry in the army.
Battle results are calculated separately for each phase but not for each day within a phase, so you can pause after one day of a phase to decide if it is better to retreat or accept the same result on each further day of the phase.
Each phase lasts for 5 days, except the first which is only 4 days.

I only just discovered that you can control 100% of an enemy's provinces, but not have a 100% victory, if he controls a province of an enemy in another war. Since the controlled province wasn't in my alliance, I couldn't enter it or do anything about it, until I bribed them to give me military access. Then I liberated it, & got my 100% score.

Did you know the AI can force you to accept a very favorable peace ?

If the AI controls all your cores and all provinces connected to your capital, it can force you to accept a peace. But the peace agreement will depend on your warscore, so if you control many of his provinces and he only controls one of yours, you could be "forced" to accept several of his provinces.

Kind of a forceful gift. :D

Yes that is a really fast way to explore a province; it only take as many days as entering the port usually takes. Did you know you can explore any inhabited province so long as you can move troops into an adjacent province? A conquistador is not needed. Just send the troops to the undiscovered, neighboring province. They cannot actually enter the province without military access or declaration of war, but the the province is discovered regardless.
