Did you know that heirs can actually die outside of events?

I just found out last night. I think that was the first time in the few hundred hours of EU4 I've played where my heir died without it being from a hunting accident or from them falling ill.

That said, anyone else think it's really strange that the heir is much more likely to die then the ruler thanks to the hunting accident event? I mean, it seems to have like a 50% chance to happen for each ruler, and I've had that event fire like three times in one ruler's lifetime!

There is a chance to die whenever a ruler/heir is a general leading an army; and also a chance whenever they fight in a battle. It can actually be a good idea if you have a terrible heir to make them a general and try to off them. You'll suffer a stability hit but it's better than having a terrible ruler.

Though yeah, that hunting accident seems atrociously common. Heirs need to stop hunting and getting so sick.

Oh no, this heir wasn't leading an army or anything like that. He just randomly died. Never knew that was even possible before now, my heirs only ever died to hunting accidents (and more rarely, getting sick). My rulers almost never die until they're at least 50 unless leading an army, so apparently being a ruler is much safer then being a general.

Yup, it's happened to me a few times. What blew MY mind was when I found out that artillery transfer their defensive pips to the unit in front of them during combat.

Heirs above the age of 20 can die naturally. It's controlled by HEIR_DEATH in defines (and if the code uses the same formula as MONARCH_DEATH, then it's scripted in defines to happen much less frequently).
