This was really awesome.
Try using First Person Camera mod and link to a regional train or an airplane, follow it outside your region and see what happens
Trains and Airplanes (I didn't tried with a boat, but can be the same) at one point in the blueness (when you start moving very far from your region the scenery became almost blue-ish) you'll find that a train will reach a "ghost" station, an airplane will land at a "ghost" airport and, eventually, if they don't despawn, they will depart to go back to your city.
I have taken a video of a full trip of one airplane starting at my airport, landing somewhere in the blue and then going backi to my airport. But the same happens with regional trains (cargo or passengers are the same).
This behaviour is also the main cause of the trains piling up at borders: given the trains don't despawn fast but stops at a "ghost" town, at one point they will fill the entire railway.
Try the ride with that mod, you also have a chance to see the map well outside your region.
