Am I wrong in noticing that the AI has become way worse at waging war in 1.13? Navigating around forts seems to be the big problem, but I've also run into a few cases where Sweden has declared war on someone, then kept all of their troops in Stockholm.

Is something going on here? Are we waiting for the patch to get out of beta, or is this going to be a long term thing?

yeah they like sit at borders and dance around forts and they develop like crazy, there was a guy a couple of threads ago that listed bugs found 1.13 you might want to check there

i think they rely on their allies when DoW ing but they cant figure out whether they will come or not

It's a full release. It's being patched, yes, but it's still a full release.

I think the AI just likes to admire the art work that has gone into all the forts without ruining it :p

It would have been a full release if they hadn't a vacation.

They probably would have hotfixed it by now too, damn them and their private lives!

Didn't notice that much fail, its not perfect but AI do well in most situations. I had quite a few trouble fighting Ottomans, they keep their 30 stacks close and they are very hard to defeat. AI goes for objectives and if player retakes it then they try to retake it again. Its decent, they capture forts etc.. I got dowed and dogpiled quite a few times by AI, they seem to know when to declare war.

- I've seen some Spaniards again running through Africa and Anatolia to return to Spain tho...
- AI also seems to rarely (if ever?) cancels their movement even if its not locked yet, so they bumped sometimes into superior force and die. This happens sometimes, not too much it seems.
- France also failed in my QQ game, they kep 70% their original territory. England was fine. Commonwealth is waaaay OP bossing HRE around. Russia formed, killed hordes, entered Sweden and colonized all Siberia.
- Bahmani's hold 90% of India etc.. doesn't look too wierd. edit: they formed Hindustan lol, never seen AI do that..
- Ming is also well and alive in 1650y

If they didn't have a vacation coming up, the final build would have stayed in QA a lot longer. Wiz basically said the Colonization bug was introduced by a last minute change, that wasn't really tested and they do NOT do that for full releases. It's probably not a good idea for a beta release either, but whatever.

Naval AI is much improved in that it will actually retreat now, which is huge. AI still sometimes suicide DOWs and gets frozen and the whole fort awareness thing is a work in progress but 1.13 was definitely worth the update.

1.13 AI is better than 1.12 by a good degree. I don't see any big differences in the behaviour in comparison to previous versions. There were always occassions of dumb AI, and there always will be.

The one huge but so simple thing was making AI retreat in naval battles. It doesn't make that much of a difference in the actual outcome, but one decisive battle and then forgetting about the ships isn't possible anymore. You actually have to care and watch out about the naval aspect at least a slight more bit.

I'd really like some concrete examples / bug reports of AI misbehaving with forts instead of 'AI doesn't understand forts at all', because I'm really not seeing the latter in my own games.

The main problem I have with the AI is how they always give up very important sieges and immediately start sieging again. Now I hire a few mercenary units to make sure the progress is not lost on my allies' sieges.

One problem i have seen is that the IA with a 40k army, siege a non important fort with lets say 20k stack, and have the other 20k stack waiting in the nearest province.
Meanwhile, his allies are fighting and losing every battle in another places.

It seems like the IA, sometimes, give excesive priority to estrategic "useless" (At that moment in the war) forts instead of helping allies fighting battles.

The counterpoint to this is that when the AI runs off to help in every battle, it becomes very easy to trick it to leave sieges, and results in it failing to capture wargoals and losing the overall war.
