Great pictures and instructions! I really like the roundabouts, they help with traffic a lot.

Indeed. I wish there was an actual roundabout tool, though. Like a "circle" tool or something, and then you just connect roads to it.
Edit: I saw you answered this above, but really, "all" that would be needed is a separate tool for making circular roads, of maybe 2-3 types (set "center" and then expand to size) and then you just connect connections to it as usual.

Hmm, this doesn't work apparently:
2013-04-10_00001.jpg

Most traffic from the right, goes towards the bottom and the right. Traffic from the top goes straight and towards the left. Traffic from the bottom goes to to top. I guess the traffic from the right is the one that's causing the jams most of the time.
I replaced it with a crossroads and it goes a lot better. A shame tho, i like the look of roundabouts a lot better (we have like millions in the Netherlands).

Of course in reallife, a roundabout where the highest flow of traffic has to go round for 3/4th of it, it causes a lot of jams as well...

If there is a preponderance of traffic that would have to go round 3/4 of the way, then you could have a slip road between those two roads to save them having to go round the roundabout - in effect joining them to make their own complete route

This is why I use a three lane roundabout. In theory, cars on the inside lane take the first exit, middle lane, the second exits, and outside lane, the third exit - but the cims don't always follow these rules. Roundabouts with three lanes can also have more exits to clear the roundabout sooner.

Shouldn't it be the opposite? Cars on the outside lane exit first?

Nope. The inside lane is the one closest to the side of the road. From Wikipedia:

"The inside lane (i.e. the one beside the hard shoulder) refers to the lane used for normal travel, while the middle lane is used for overtaking cars on the inside lane. The outside lane (i.e. closest to oncoming traffic) is used for overtaking vehicles in the middle lane. The same principle lies with dual carriageways with more than three lanes."

I have found that using express-way for the roundabout certainly do not make traffic lights, as opposed to using one-way roads, when you connect with a regular road with more than one lane. Interchanges into the roundabout works with Avenues, one-way roads, express roads, and roads, with any lane width.

The only downside is that the cars already in the roundabout stops, and give way for entering vehicles.

Yep, thats why I said use expressway. But make the roads feeding into the roundabout normal two-way roads. Then, if you take the roundabout anti-clockwise, the traffic on the roundabout does seem to usually get priority. But the main fly in the ointment is the pedestrians constantly jaywalking. I do feel that's something that does need tuning in the game, the number of pedestrians apparently happy to make long journeys on foot along and across quite hostile stretches of road.

We do not need a roundabout tool guys, just use express ways :) Works like a charm. I have built a town that is dominated by roundabouts and it works fine. I see no need for "ploppable" roundabouts when current tools are so flexible.

Changing traffic rules would be cool though! Even if only in the map editor so a map creator can fine tune their map so it works perfectly.

A ploppable tool would be nice though to create squares and circuses in order to have some points of reference in our cities. I've made some roundabouts but their central part is quite empty. Fountains and statues don't fix this (unless we add a concrete texture which doesn't exist currently).

They wouldn't prevent you from building your custom roundabouts if you want to.
