Even if the dice were 'skewed', military tactics call for any war/battle to be fought only when you have 3:1 military superiority. If this is not possible, achieve a victory by surprise or superior positioning. If THIS is not possible (in the case of a defensive war/battle, use politics or retreat to fight another day. Or do what the enemy does not expect (sometimes this involves attacking their capital while their 'doomstack' is busy elsewhere.

Well another thing learned today. This calls for toast.

tost-foto

It looks tasty but at the same time it kinda looks gross... I'm not much into melted cheese on toast. :/

Anyways, usually I look at the battle screen at the wrong time, like when I get bad rolls, but when I watch the whole battle I usually see my armies getting good rolls most of the time. So it isn't really a problem for me.

You lose a lot of more units when you have too much cavalry in your army but I don't think it would make a change as big as you say.

The reason your high roll does so much less damage to the enemy than their high roll does to you is that your regiments are already at 1/2 or maybe even less health when you get a good die roll.

There is also the factor that different units are different. Even at the same tech level and group there are some pretty big disparities that can result in the sort of casualty figures you observe just due to the unit stats themself. You then have to add in the myriad factors that affect land combat and you can easily have a situation where higher die rolls mean nothing. Hit a stack from a bankrupt nation some time if you doubt this, or even a nation with a 3 mil leader vs an 8.

Sid Meier's 2010 GDC keynote covers this pretty nicely. Not sure how EU actually handles dice rolls but even if the AI and player rolls gets treated the same humans have a tendency to view it with skepticism. I can admit I'm not above that behavior, especially when it comes to EU. ^^

The part with the dice rolls is about 6 minutes long. The whole keynote is pretty good, and even if I don't agree with some of Mr Meier's opinions, I'd recommend anybody interested in player psychology and game design to watch it.

And here I was believing that the dices are actually skewed, based on factors such as generals and land-naval or offensive-defensive sliders. It sure seems to me that I roflstomp with 9's when I attack with offensive sliders...

I mean I played as France, which as I understand it is a "lucky nation" within the terms of the game's predefined setup. I even cheated (lol) to get 100% army tradition, to see if it were the generals that were causing the problem. Same issues though, my stacks just get rolled up by equivalent enemy stacks. I had 20+ units sitting on London, and the British roll in with a similarly sized stack. Mind you, they're attacking me. as soon as the battle starts, I'm losing 1500+ units every tick, and they're losing maybe 40. Then, I get a high roll, and the Brits are only losing 40-50 units while I'm losing none in comparison. This makes no sense.
Most likely, the Brits got a high roll in the shock phase, while you got a high roll in the fire phase. At the start fire is so weak, that you can basically picture it as your armies taking a break every second round, with no loses on either side.
