The way it is redacted makes me wonder if you can "starve off" supply hogs for a while if you have a shortage on a national scale.

*bounce* This is exciting news indeed. So a D-Day landing in Normandy is all swell, but you better get to Cherbourg and Le Havre pronto.

Great.
And the Scheldt. And for that matter, Smolensk.

Though of course, i'd also be interested in WW2 Logistics Manager game... i will concede that the new logistics system is probably a better approach within the HoI series. Sustained w00t for the cumulative updates so far.

Yes, fighting and winning a lot is fun but it seems that HOI3 will be a lot more realistic and maybe that's good, I personally enjoy building and planning as much as fighting.
I agree. Would be interesting to see units in proximity to the enemy (but not in open battle) suffer a small amount of attrition due to active patrolling by both sides, as well as the occasional artillery barrage.

In addition there is a supply tax, the further your unit is from its supply source the more supplies it consumes. After all, supplies don’t move themselves; you are going to need people to move them, who in turn also consume supplies.

I do hope that weather and terrain will effect the supply chain. Low infra provinces will consume more resources to move supplies than high infra. The season of mud (the 'rasputitsa') should severely hamper the logistics chain for example.

Edit: Oh yeah, Johan, looks marvellous :)

Will we only be aware of supply problems after it's too late or will there be a mechanism that allows us to plan ahead, as in "I can only place three divisions in this province because if I add a fourth I will cause an 'out of supply' situation"?

actually it should probably be brigades supported due to how divisions will be built. Also, I hope there will be more logistical differences between types of units. Tank units require much more than infantry units, and it's not all just oil.

Say, a certain province can support 4 infantry brigades, or one armor brigade and two infantry brigades

It seems that we will now not simply be in supply but in supply depending on the efficiency (infrastructure) of the route and how concentrated the amount of units are that you wish to supply.

This is very like what Kanitatlan was suggesting is it not?

Anyhow I am curious about how long a unit can operate on its reserves? and if it is necessary to have reserves to operate.

If a unit carries a certain amount of supplies with them is there a maximum amount of supplies that they can carry ?

Edit: Has a unit something like a supply tank that is constantly being filled at different rates depending on what your doing and where you are , empty the tank and your in trouble.

very nice. Might make a pacific game more fun. Can you make supply depot's (Like Truk) to reduce your supply tax going into the Theatre of Operation?
I really like the sound of the changes being made throughout the game.

This does sound really terrific - an excellent improvement on HOI2. My question is this:

Since convoys are still apparently automated, what improvements have been made from the "logic" of automated convoys in HOI2? Will we be able to set up specific point-to-point convoys (e.g., Tiger convoy, etc.) to get emergency things accomplished? Will we have a chance to interdict those specifics (e.g., PQ-17)?

After reading many of these posts Johan didn't say that this system is going to handle raw materials the same as supplies. We shouldn't just assume that the raws are going to move the same way as in HOI DD. I hope Johan continues with the logistics in next DD and touches on raws and IC.

If you are allowed to elaborate on that: is it possible to trace supply to one "target province" (e.g. a frontline province full of units) via multiple ways? So if the infra inbetween my capital and that target province is rather bad, will the target province be supplied just on the one best path or will it be supplied via multiple pathes? Otherwise a single bad province on the way would be a major bottleneck even if it would be possible to ship around that province.

Well, if you look at the map in the screenshot, the unit in Morocco is supplied both from Casablanca and Tiaret in Algeria.

I'm not sure what you mean by force concentration being the key... limiting armor, deploying it properly, or both?

The potential problem I see here is that prewar (not concerned about combat efficiency) I just stack all my units in my capital to pay out the least amount of supplies and oil.

True, but that means leaving your entire border unprotected. I'm sure the min/maxers and habitual reloaders will do it, but I don't want to be raped by the French for leaving Alsace uncovered...

As for the 500 tank army, that seems like a very expensive garrison with this system, since you wouldn't be able to move it far from the capital without going out of supply. I believe that one thing that Johan implied is that there is a maximum amount of supplies that you can push to a province in a single day. And that is probably way less than what 500 divisions need (not to mention that it will take forever to reach them in the depths of Russia).

Great work Dev team. The improvements in HOI 3 are promising and will make this a more realistic experience. Although still abstracted (I'm not in favor of the need to micromanage supplies and oil), campaign planning will need to be more thorough and the dynamics of implementing that strategy will be more interesting.

I must say, being able to see the supplylines on the map is already a great improvement over the current system

:)

Keep up the good work !
