Ha! I sure hope so, otherwise island-hopping is going to suck.
I also wonder this -- will divisions in transports still lose org.? I always thought that was silly -- it's not like they are starving on the boats!
Actually it's not. For example, imagine you are an infantry private in 1st Inf Div on a transport crossing the atlantic heading for Morocco for the Torch Landings. Two weeks below deck, allowed up on deck for 20 mins once each 24 hour period, 2 cubic meters of space for you and your gear, sleeping accomodations are in the engine compartment, semi-private (you and 150 of your closest friends). You got barely enough fresh air moving through the bulkheads, 24 hour noise, no showers, a 30 minute wait in line to use the head (latrine/bathroom), people vomiting from getting seasick, and best of all, the
high quality military field rations that were bought from the lowest bidder.
Other things you have to consider:
-various unit commanders have been out of touch during the crossing, as unless they were all on the same ship (and then not monitoring their units status) radio silence prevents them from communicating with their boss/peers.
-possible spread of illness among the troop. Being held in close quarters for a period like this is the best thing the typhoid virus could hope for.
-weapon/equipment maintenance, salt water spray is not known for it's kindness to ferrous based metal things. Prolonged exposure causes equipment problems.
