I see this "clergy" thing will give so much to talk about...
In Europe it might be a wee bit too much abstracted, but for Latin America, the Mother Church was pretty active - as Protestantism won a good part of the old world and catholicism lost strength, it began to exert more and more influence in there. Brazil, at Vicky's period, has the policy of
Padroado - the catholic church being put at the service of the Emperor which in turn grants it official status amongst other things. Ecuador had debts to the Papal State etc...
I have to agree that the naming isn't the most sensible, however. Whereas the men of cloth and those of education might share purpose, they are RARELY the same in political context. Professors and teachers tend to be far more liberal and left-wing than clergy (just go to your friendly local university then your friendly local place of worship to take a look around

) - particularly with touchy issues.
ADDENDUM: Also, bloody hell, RELee made the point that I thought I had written here... In the end is just a gameplay abstraction that has a VERY low priority here.
Though I will always think of RELee now as Tommy Lee Jones.
