Why on Earth wouldn't you pause the game when looking at these windows, anyway? :confused:

Its a bit waste of time not to... only in war do you really need to be watching all the time. In HoI3 it is not that important since you are almost always in war or max speed but in V2 there will be long period of peace and having the game pause when going to window is stretching the play time out for no reason.

I mean... I get maybe 4 hour every 3 days to play and frequently alot less than that for some weeks so its annoying to only get maybe 8 years of playtime in per week when without the pause I might get double that.

Thats the whole problem
You have to stop the game to play it, you play the game while it rolls past as you could in Victoria, in victoria you could keep it going and do pretty much everything but use the ledger, now everything requires that everything else be stopped for it.

I hope the natural ebb and flow of the game prevents great powers from changing commonly and having great wars occur often, especially earlier in the game. Although I suppose by the game's definition the Crimean War would have been a great war because it involved numerous great powers. But I think a truly epic and global conflict wasnt really something anyone considered in the early period because the Napoleonic Wars were still not very far in the past.

Great war requires 2 great powers on either side - Russia had no great power ally

Yeah I see now my previous understanding was wrong, somehow I saw it as just one great power was needed for a great war. Still though, my original point was that I hope global total wars are at the very least discouraged through gameplay mechanics in the very early part of the game and ideally very unlikely. I think historically Europe was not collectively prepared to enter a conflict like that at the time.

The number of Great Powers and the number of colonial powers is defined in a text file.

I might have missed the answer somewhere in this thread, but how do you intend to balance the AI and Great Power mechanics?

I mean, do you intend to let AI start Great War anytime it falls off the top 8 (which might be quite often)? Or it would be naturally more inclined to just accept it?

That's given, but what is your opinion as a dev on that matter?

Should it be more warlike, or just let it go, making Great Power mechanics more of a human player thing? Just curious.

Depends on the situation the AI country is in.

The thing here is that the AI will need to realize the need for great power allies. This is what might discourage great wars early on and make them more probable later on.
However it does mean the AI will not be using the EU3 approach to alliance considerations were it usually sticks to it's friends from 1399 to 1820. Either that or great power alliances are in fact considered separately from others by it (most likely I suppose).

Then again I suppose you already know all that so I'm just thinking aloud ;)

I'd very much like to sabotage Austria's Great Power status, have it break apart and then play as some nice ahistorical Slavic countries.

So how will the ottoman empire be handled? In Vicky 1 it normaly droped out of Great power status quite fast, and considering that its loss of SOI probably is a prerequisite for most of the trouble in the Balkans, this seems to be one of the balancing things that may break the whole area and the subsequent major conflict of Austria and Russia for dominating the area.

Interesting, what if GP placed a few colonies and then lost it GP status, what will be the conswquences? does it loose colonies, or just stay with it without the ability to create more?
