Isn't asking "what if people don't have an internet connection?" a little like asking "well, what if my PC spec doesn't match the Minimum Requirements?".

I have upgraded my PC to play a specific game in the past, and at the end of the day if you don't have the hardware to play a game you ask yourself "Am I prepared to upgrade to play this game?". If this wasn't the case, we'd still be playing games designed for 286 machines.

This case is easier than that. If you don't have an internet connection, you find someone who does and use that.

If download only was the only way Paradox are prepared to fund a CK Expansion then I'm all for it, because I don't like the alternative... no expansion.

I don't get all the angst over having to have an internet connection to get the expansion. I've lived in some pretty rural areas, and at least since the turn of the century, I've always had multiple choices for an internet connection. If you've not got the internet because of cost, well, if you're paying over $20/month for a connection, you're paying too much, and if you can't afford $20/month, you probably shouldn't be spending your money on games anyway.

And AFAIK, you've always needed a connection to get the patches, and Paradox games (no offense intended) have always needed the patches.

Is there anyway to download from gamersgate without using a credit card though? What about those of us who don't have (or wish to use on the internet) a credit card? That's the biggest problem with it being only in a download-only format for me.

Also, is it a stand-alone expansion ala Doomsday?

You cannot order it, you can just download it.
And AFAIK it wont be stand-alone.

I used to be afraid to use a credit card on the net, but after having done it a few times, I've found it to be no less safe than using it in a physical store. If you don't have a credit card, you can purchase a pre-paid credit card and use it. Basically, it's like a gift card, expect that retailers process it just like a regular credit card, so there should be no problem using it on GamerGate. And since the limit is whatever the amount you chose to purchase it for (there may be a certain minimum amount you can put on it), the security risk is minimal.

The problem I ran into is that, with my American pre-paid credit card, I attempted to buy a game from GamersGate and was rejected. I believe becuase it's a foreign vendor, which is not covered by American Express prepaid cards. So instead I was forced to use a regular card.

You can transfer money from your own bank-account to a PayPal-bankaccount and with that PayPal-account you can then purchase things at GamersGate

btw in Ireland and according to a friend of mine America too we can download and burn stuff in our internet cafes and libraries.

Well, i have never seen an internet cafe in my entire life in Portugal. Maybe there are a couple of em, but most likely only in Oporto and Lisbon. And few libraries posess computers. Usually only the real big ones or the ones at schools/universities. And i have never seen a computer in libraries with a CD burner, and, most computers, btw, are still Pentium 1s or 2s. You cant really compare America with Portugal, honestly.

Whoa internet Cafes are rare in Portugal.

I was there for two weeks a few years back and they had a good few internet cafes. Probably cause it was a tourist part of Portugal.

Well if you can get into a library that doesn't have a disk burner you could burn it onto a flash drive maybe?

I only mentioned America because a friend of mine their said he can download stuff at internet cafes so if its in two countries it is probably in your country.

:I really dont know how to reply to such a smart comment (not to say another thing...).

I got internet (on my previous phrase i was SUPOSING if i did not have). But what about the countless people that bought Paradox games and do not have internet? They will never get their hands into all these expansions like NA/Revolutions/Deus Vult.

I hope I didn't come across as being annoying or crass, but I really can't see the complaint about internet access.

I got the internet in 1995 and never looked back. It was sometimes hundreds of dollars per month because my 28K modem had only long distance numbers to call. I used to download load 10 mb game demos for days at a time (horay for FTPs with resume feature since the phone line always disconnected... i downloaded Quake 1 demo when it came out but it took forever) and the when I started playing online games. Some online games like Ultima Online required access and then they started having 100mb patches in which I had to burn the patches to CD at work and take them home (and back then CDRs cost a lot and always failed when the screen saver came on by accident)

Playing online was a pain with a 56K by then but I still played and I liked it.

Yes, I can see where you are coming from, but at the same time it was like people who went into a computer store asking for games on a 3.5" inch floppy because their computer didn't have a CD-ROM.

Eventually, you couldn't buy 3.5" disks anymore much less games.

That is how it is just going to be in 10-20 years. Internet connection is going to required for all games.

I don't like Steam more than most people, but even the most popular games like Bioshock now require you to authenticate via the internet. Secondly, to authenticate Windows XP you have to have an internet connection.

Yes... I hate WGA more than anyone but if I really wanted to I could just do without games and install Linux (which is hard to get a new distro without an internet connection though) but after that I wouldn't need an internet connection.

Like 3.5" inch floppies, CDs are going to go away in the next decade. So rather than fight it you should try to pressure your municipalities to get better internet access or do what I did and make sure where ever I moved had broad band. Sorry for the spiel... But its just one of those things I see as a trend.

This is like saying "What if I don't have a car to go buy it?" because they don't offer shipping. Or moaning about not having a house to ship it to. Honestly, do you know what year it is? Progress is made by letting go and moving on, not constantly catering to the backwards.

You make me laugh!

I've actually been in internet cafes in places like Bragança, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro, Coimbra, S. Pedro do Sul, Gouveia.
Other places even have wireless connections for you to use.

And you can have the notebook with HSDPA internet connection as part of the portuguese government program for students.

Yea, well, i have never been on the northern part of Portugal. I have been in Lisbon countless times, but hell, the city is so big that i cant be sure of it.

And considerating i never saw em on the big cities, i concluded that in the smallest ones (northern ones) there werent, either.

Well, I've been to Southern Portugal and there's internet cafe's there too. Also in Lisbon. A quick google throws up 6 in Lisbon, and for the South 3 in Lagos, 1 in Faro, 1 in Portimão, etc, etc. Portugal isn't exactly a 3rd world country you know...

Have fun

I haven't really payed close attention to all this expansion pack discussion and I am quite lazy at this moment. Can someone explain to me what is it all about?

If I undestood it's going to be released only online as a download pack?
