What specifically determine what education trait your child gets? I've been trying to get my heirs to be mages but there doesn't seem to be a way to be sure. I've been trying to educate the heirs of my vassals as test subjects using my mage character but after educating 12 of them only 2 turned out to be mages. 5 of them turned out to be priests and monks while 3 of them became nightblades. The last 2 became battlemages. I've also tried having a mage who only had learning(less than 10 in others but had 22 learning) train some kids but he got a bunch of priests instead.

Are there other factors that determine what the child becomes?

Seems like magic teacher can give you any of the mage eductions. I've had battlemages train priests, nightblades train archmages and so on.
Dunno about the others cause all my guys have been mages so far haha

There doesn't seem to be any logic to it. I've had my ruler always educate my heir, he started with one of the stewardship traits and now like seven generations in, I'm into the assassination traits. I know that a while ago there was going to be a custom made for the mod education system but they couldn't get it to work, perhaps what we are seeing are the remnants.

If I remember how it works, the logic is that you can get ANY education with a shared stat bonus. That's why Nightblades can educate Battlemages, and Knights can educate Diplomats.

Nope; this is the vanilla system. Our system had more control but was disliked as you couldn't select your child's guardian (you sent them off to guilds instead).

sounds about right, I read somewhere that the vanilla system assigns a probability to each education trait based on the trait of the child's guardian, but since this mod has 2-3 times as many education traits, there's a lot more variation in the possible outcomes. A rule of thumb in this case would be to assign each education trait to a group based off the stat they increase the most, like the classes in Elder Scrolls being focused under combat, magic, and stealth. These "groups" would be the equivalent of the vanilla education traits. A child is more likely to receive an education trait in the same "group" as their guardian than they are to receive a trait from any specific other group, but since there's three times as many traits in each group as there are in vanilla the specific odds are much smaller. So while having your son taught by a mage won't guarantee he'll be a mage, you can be fairly certain he's more likely to end up a Priest or Monk than he is to become a knight for instance.

Actually I think it would be awesome to have the possibility of sending your children to the guilds as an alternative to normal upbringing. With some requisites, of course, like having specific traits and/or attributes, money, etc.

seconding the request of bringing back the education system in some form as alternative too vanilla, maybe an apprenticeship option instead of calling it guilds

I would like a little more control, even if its still random, you send Johnny to Mage school, or the Guild for Magery ect ect.

It's not that random. Priest is a mage-aligned education. Priest is also one of the best educational outcomes in the game, as all levels add monthly piety and more learning for spells, and Priest 4 gives players access to most of the best spells in the game (Immortality and Daedric Horde are two of the most obvious ones).

Prior to 0.2.0 I don't know; I think it would semi-randomly pick an education from the archetype. As of 0.2.0 (the SVN version) educations are chosen according to Conclave's mechanics; only 5 educations currently exist, and the former educations are now specializations.

so no way to determine the education like you can with conclaves dlc?

There is, on the SVN version. 0.1.6 isn't compatible with Conclave but the SVN is.

Latest SVN version gives some control over education.

You choose an education at birth, which gives child traits. You choose again at 12. It's not hard to guess what is needed to educate the child in the wanted direction. There is still some randomness, and the trait received from childness may be not the best for what you wish to do, so if you may have, for example, a mage, he/she may be a bad one.

The system runs fine for me in a game started since 150 years, without CTD.
