I'm really confused about how this is supposed to work now. I managed to occupy all of the daimyos capitals plus Japan's one province. I got a million dialog boxes saying that I had disbanded the shogunate. What exactly does that mean? I still can't carry on any diplomacy with the daimyos and Japan still exist as an OPM. The war leader happened to be Ming, so I was able to get territory from one of the daimyos but Kyoto was still off-limits in the peace deal.

Am I missing something here?

They get guaranteed be various Chinese nations. In my game, Ming is only one of the powers in China. Wu, Qin, and Manchu are all about equally as power as Ming.

Does that mean if I go for a WC anyway and spare Japan for the last years I will be able to disband the Shogunate? Or should I Just Maul 3 Daiymos pretty hard and hope the last one will get it's act together and unite Japan?

Well if you have lucky nations on you can keep annexing till one of the daiymos is lucky, then beat up on the other 3 and hope the lucky one capitalizes once you peace and eventually unites Japan. I've never done this, but in theory it could work I suppose =P

That's the big question.

In my latest WC attempt game I'm planning to Holy War like never before, & first force Ming etc to stop guarantteeing Japan. I'm then going to save game! When Japan is unguaranteed/has no allies, I'll then occupy all Daimyos & hope the disbanding of the Shogunates works as it should. If it doesn't, if I'm still left with untouchable Daimyos, I'll reload & try scrtagging all bar the largest Daimyo.

I had the exact same situation as the OP in my previous game, but Ming were guarantteeing Japan when I Disbanded the Shogunate, I'm hoping that's what bugged it.

I've had lots of wars against Japan - when they have allies in the war you cant ask japan for provinces, only the alliance leader who will give them away for 4BB each regardless of the CB you used.

When you war against only Japan you can demand provinces correctly until only the Daiymo capitals are left at which point the only diplomacy options available are concede defeat or vassilise for around 1000 war score.

I think the spam message about shogunate disbanded indicates it isnt actually disbanding despite what the message continually tells you.

I went back to an old save where Japan had never been at war with anyone - destroyed Ming and Korea who were both guarantteeing Japan before going to war with Japan. No luck, same old disbanded shogunate spam and not able to demand capitals.

Okay, after a little bit of planning here is my plan: Minamoto owns a province in Korea, Taji... owns okinawa, if I isolate their capitals can I force them to move their capitals to this province, where I can just let nationalists do my work?

Nope. The capitals are coastal.

try to get a personal union with the Japan OPM if you inherit/integrate that province the shogunate gets disbanded for real and the Daimyos become normal empires.

When I did WC, i had the same problems, but once I'd taken the provinces around Kyoto (so Kyoto was surrounded by my provines - note 2 of the Daimyo's still had multiple provinces, I found the disband shogunate took effect and I could negotiate separately with all the daimyos. Might be a coincidence I guess, but while it's bugged this at least proves there is 'something' which makes it work.

Thankyou so much! This worked for me, I was very careful not to occupy any Daimyo capitals untill I had taken all provinces around Kyoto then next war I was able to annex Kyoto as soon as the Shogunate disbanded message popped (no message spam). Now just a few more wars with remnants of Japan to complete my WC :D
