Why is it that all of Western Europe - and the Ottomans (who don't even take colonial ideas,) hates my guts as soon as I take 5-6 provinces in Mexico, but are all fine allying each other for the same reason?

AI Spain and Portugal are the most glaring offenders, frequently allies despite one or the other holding most of Mexico most of the time.

So I can't have significant allies outside the Austrians, Commonwealth, or Russia, while they get to pick and choose? I can't even maintain an alliance even if they're bitter rivals with each other. They just both hate me. I find it very restrictive. Playable, but restrictive.

If gold were THAT important, it would break all the alliances though.

WYP and WYSP being treated differently is still nonsensical too.

The complete answer would depend on which tag you're playing as that's having this issue.

I played three campaigns of Ming, Majapajit, Holland. All three, particularly Holland, can somewhat contest early Spain and Portuguese colonization.

With the first two a European ally wasn't necessary. But helps, as it deters Spanish DoW forcing me to send troops across the world.

With Holland I lost my French alliance in a couple months after the war of conquest on Aztecs. Went from 200 opinion with 85 trust to -50 in the blink of an eye. Zero warning of alliance breaking.

I think the problem is that WYSP isn't adjusted by trust, whereas WYP is. So, alliances will immediately break if your ally's ruler dies and the new one is militarist (ie. wants a lot of provinces).
