Umayyad had another revolt pop up, this one for independence. I've had my Chancellor sowing dissent in his capital for a while, that may have something to do with it. So I moved the Chancellor over to the capital of Andalusia instead.

I got a Catholic uprising in one of my German provinces (Anhalt, belonging to Holstein). Before my stack got over there, Holstein and his allies dropped a 15k stack on the 1900 revolt stack. I promptly turned around, because…

While all this has been going on, I was losing war score in both my wars, due to not controlling any of the targets. Taking Lyon got me *just* over 100% on Middle Francia. Winning that war took away the support against attrition it was going to give me in Genève, but I didn't want to chance losing more war score and needing to occupy something else. I'll have to settle for taking Genève with only 11k, and use *that* support to fight the 8k stack guarding Neuchatel. I'll have almost 23k to bring against it. Currently back down to 50% against Saxony.

I've been breeding some of those women I mentioned. Should have some claims soon.

842 June 4: Saxony was down to 2 counties, yet a faction put him on the throne of West Francia.

842 July 17: Another Andalusian claim revolt starts. I just had a major battle (my 22k vs. Saxony's allies' 8k) Wipe them, losing only about 650 myself. Wiped a nearby 2k stack, then a 1700 stack. Returning to Neuchatel to finally siege it.

842 Aug 26: King of Sweden died, and I inherited. Immediately handed off to a Swedish duke of my dynasty (and raised 1166 levies from the area).

842 Sep 1: Andalusia got a Peasant Revolt.

842 Dec 10: Won the war. Unexpected benefit of the King usurping West Francia: when I started the war, he only owned 1 county in Upper Burgundy, but by usurping, he gained the other 5, which I got for winning the war! Downside is that the truce with West Francia that was about to expire just got extended to 5 years. That OK tho, I can go play with the Spanish Muslims, or maybe let my raised levy penalties cool off. In any case, I usurped Kingdom of Saxony off him, and gave it to one of my dukes (whom I'm mentoring). I made kind of a mess of Burgundy & Upper Burgundy, but I expect it will sort itself out soon enough.

I tried a bit of raiding, but West Francia is too big right now to mess with comfortably while I have 5 years of raised levy penalty. I think I'll take my retinue raiding Lombardy.

843 March 8

Deciding to let my vassal levies & gold stockpile grow, and my raise levy penalties shrink, I sent my retinue (about 6500 and recruiting) over the Alps to Lombardy (heading for Rome) and some ships around to meet them and carry the loot. Shortly after they all got under way, the Count of Paris revolted. Well, I couldn't pass up an opportunity like that, so I declared war (so much for the penalty cool-off…). Only gathered very close vassal levies, plus my own levies from Flanders. The Count moved his 1250 men to attack some nearby Frenchmen, and my troops piled in (over 8,000). Once the nearby combat was over, part of my troops chased down the Count's survivors. With 1 battle, 2 sieges and a prisoner, the war was over in 10 months. Installed my 11 year old son (my other sons are all under 5).

Also, My Duke of Upper Burgundy declared holy war against West Francia for the Duchy of Savoy. Kind of gutsy: he only has 957 troops, against 5387 for the King. But… we Aelfricsons are replacing the Karlings in more than just having an empire. We also dogpile on enemies. 21 more Aelfricsons joined the party. Middle Francia & Bavaria joined the other side, but their troops are trivial.

Meanwhile, my retinue was skimming the loot from the west coast of Italy, from Lucca towards Rome. The Pope saw me coming (Orbetello is also his, and I looted it) so he raised 3,652 troops to defend Rome. In the month or so that I took raiding Orvieto, he put them away, so I won't have to fight them now that I'm in Rome.

844 April 3: Raided Rome. Sent some ships off to Tangiers to unload gold while I finish the siege.

844 May 25: The Count of Pfalz declared to push a Prince's claim on Middle Francia. Of course, I declared war on him. I'll use some of my nearby vassals who have smaller levy raised penalties. :)

845 Feb 17: Pfalz war won. Went up and sieged Genoa. Twice. Weirdly, both times I sieged the capital city, and the game wouldn't let me siege the next barony. Just noticed: there are only 4 vikings in the world, 2 of them in my empire. Looks like, on average, I need to loot 9 settlements to get it, but it will be worth it in loot & opinion.

Feb 22: My vassals captured Savoy. Continuing to raid Lombardy.

May 2: The Andalusia/Marrakech area has broken up into 6 independent realms. Declaring war on a 1-province Count & a 3-province Duke. Conquest, instead of holy war, so the others are less likely to jump in, and I won't need to raise many vassal levies.

June 1: Frisian Liberation Revolt breaks out in Holland, with 5994 troops. Called up over 11k levies from mainland, not counting the ones already committed to Andalusia. Fortunately, the enemy is splitting up his stacks, so I can take them in detail.

Aug 27: My Duke of Luxembourg declared a Prepared Invasion of Mauretania! My vassals are trying to be useful. :D He's a bit outnumbered on his own, but the dogpile will win it. Also, the dogpile running thru Andalusia is taking out some of my own enemies' forces.

Nov 1: 3rd British Catholic Uprising in Lorraine, with 2952 troops. How convenient that my troops fighting the Frisian Liberation should be available soon… altho again, the dogpile is helping. :p

846 Mar 7: Strange occurence: An adventurer declared a conquest for Barcelona. But instead of declaring against the Muslims, who hold 5 of the counties, he declared against West Francia, who only holds 1. AI is not bright.

Saving and going to bed: 826 May 3.

846 July 27: A young cousin was ruling Slevig & Jylland Counties under Danmark. He lost them to an adventurer, and moved to the court of one of my vassals. I'm now educating him. Once he turns of age, I'll invite him. Altho I already have a cousin claimant for Danmark anyway, it never hurts to have a spare. Unfortunately, the adventurer still has 3295 event troop. Danmark himself has less than 100 levies. I hope the adventurer sends his troops raiding and loses a bunch.

846 July 27: Conquered Burgos County.

846 Sep 17: Granted Burgos to my cousin, Count of Asturias de Santilla. Conquered Barcelona County. Gave it to that spare dynast from Danmark. Not ideal, but the best available at the moment.

My vassal MR is growing nicely, total of 5 tradeposts.
I need to be careful with my raiding troops in Italy. I hit Salerno, and the Byz. Empire didn't like that. They brought almost 8k troops nearby, compared to my over 9k. I should probably leave them alone.

847 Feb 19: Created Kingdom of Alban (Pictland) and gave it to my cousin, Duke of Alban, taking me from 3 over my vassal limit to 3 under. Raiding up the east coast of Italy, heading for Venice! Pressed my cousin's claim on Danmark. Their adventurer vassal has stayed out of the other adventurer's claim on Danmark, and with any luck, he will stay out of mine. I only mobilized vassals nearby who had very low raised levy penalties. I really am going to let that cool down for the worst ones this time. :D

847 Mar 18: My duke succeeded in his prepared invasion of Mauretania. But he didn't have the money to usurp the kingdom title, so I did (and kept it for now). Now he's revoking Muslims left and right. The Sultan revoked the Duchy of Marrakech, so I usurped it and gave it to the duke. Now his 3 sons each get a duchy…

847 Apr 26: The adventurer didn't stay out of it. I managed to avoid him swatting my stacks, but now I've got 3471 next door to his 3340, across a strait. So I mobilized 6k from my Flanders demesne and started it marching. Minor battle with the other adventurer, who's survivors ping-ponged from me to a Danish army in Jylland, and back to me in Slesvig. They died, of course.

… Various sieging & battling over Danmark …

848 Jan 6: 2 of my dukes declared holy wars for Alsace Duchy & Asturias Duchy. Nice to see them fighting outside the Empire, instead of within it.

848 May 9: Finished Danmark. Preparing to raid Venice.

The Empire is still on ag-cog tanistry, as are Ireland, Scotland, & Norway. Saxony & Sweden are agnatic elective gavelkind. My African, Iberian, French, & Danish territories are all agnatic or ag-cog gavelkind, as are the duchies in Wales (no kingdom yet).

As for sons, I treat all my dynasts the same, since tanistry tends not to pass from father to son anyway. My dynasty has 170 living members out of 207 total, and I can't be bothered to marry them all off. Many were already married before I got around to picking them for land anyway. It's getting a little tricky tho, as I don't want to concentrate too much land in any hands but my own, so to get guys who aren't likely to inherit, I've had to land a few kids. I try to be their guardian when that happens.

Some quick photos, as of 848b May 9, realms, religions, & cultures map modes. Religions is spreading well, culture not so much. And my own chaplain isn't getting a lot done in my demesne. :p I hadn't been posting photos because I didn't think anybody was really reading this. Altho looking now, I've got 3677 views, so somebody is at least looking. photo gallery on imgur

848 May 9: Today's amusing observation: Sultan of Andalusia is doing OK. He has no revolts going on at the moment, and his levies are up to about 3/4 of max, plus he has a mercenary band hired. Umayyad Sultan, OTOH, is not doing so hot. He lost all of his African territory to one of my dukes, Navarra Duchy broke away, a sheikh (backed by an emir) is revolting against his emir, and the Asturias Emir (backed by the Muhallabid Sultan) is revolting against the sultan. Meanwhile 2 of my dukes have declared separate holy wars for Asturias, and an adventurer who took 2 counties under West Francia is trying to conquer the county of Asturias (still has 6354 event troops). And the only war the Andalusian Sultan is in is defending the Asturias revolt against the French guy! With any luck, Andalusia's & Armagnac's troops will obliterate each other, and one of my dukes will take Asturias (likely Powys, who's bringing 21 allies). Also, the Umayyad Sultanate is actually the Kingdom of Asturias, so getting all that land would let me usurp his kingdom, yielding 6 independent emirs, which my dukes might then snap up.

In my raiding, Venice currently has 1668 levies standing in Venice. This makes me hesitant to try to raid. I'm switching over to raid the Umayyad capital in Urgell, for the chance to capture & concubine women with heritable claims on Andalusia & Muhallabid. And Rosello, to try to capture a similar claim on Umayyad. All those would simplify my conquests. Also some raiding in Francia, to capture & kill people in line for that throne. I have some weak claims there, so I need to promote a regency. Same treatment for Lombardy & Bavaria (especially since a woman with claim to Bavaria is currently in one-province Apulia!). If all works well, there could be some major gains in the next couple of decades.

848 Oct 5: Finally got my Viking trait! Captured the 2nd & 3rd heirs to West Francia while doing so, and now plotting to kill the 1st heir. No plot power against the King, but he's 40 & I'm patient. Looted Rosello a few weeks earlier, getting a concubine with claim. No plot power with the Umayyads either, so that one looks even more long-term.

Asturias looks ugly. About 13k of my vassals are sieging the 2 counties, and that conqueror is standing next door with his 6680 troops. When it looks like some of my vassals will move, he starts to move (breaking the siege of my vassal he's standing on), but then my vassal cancels so he cancels. Rinse & repeat. :p One of the Asturian holy wars is at 65% winning, so if they don't do anything stupid, we'll win.

848 Oct 16: Well, the Duke of Powys won. Unfortunately, the Duke of Aquitaine had occupied Oviedo, the capital of one of the 2 counties. So Powys now holds everything in the 2 counties except that capital barony. Aquitaine has 100 warscore, but isn't taking the win yet.

848 Oct 31: He finally took the win. I could now usurp the Umayyad Sultanate (as soon as he is at peace), but that would break it up into a bunch of independent emirs. On the one hand, I could wait and push a claim on all of it, on the other, me & my vassals could pick up all the emirs fairly easily. Of course, if *I* don't usurp it, the Duke of Powys may get enough money together to do it. I'll definitely have to watch it. Meanwhile, that conqueror's war invalidated.

849 Apr 30: Sieged Urgell, capturing several people, including a woman with heritable claim on Andalusian Kingdom. Concubined her. About a month before, I dropped a raiding army on Pavia (Lombard capital). Lombardy had 4800 troops sieging in Barcelona (plus another 600 on their way there), and turned to attack my 4500 stack in Urgell. With the mountain & good commanders, I reduced him to about 600. The survivors ran off… straight into a slightly larger stack of viking raiders (on of my sub-vassals). That stack is getting wiped, but another Lombard stack of 2300 just arrived in Barcelona. Those 2 are most of Lombardy's remaining troops. I'd love to get that claim on Lombardy now!

I had a stack of about 4900 headed down France to join the fun, but held back when it looked like I'd collide with the 6600 going home to Armagnac. Well, he hit a couple other stacks first, then I hit him while he was weak. I'm chasing him down to obliterate him, because this is his event stack, and it regenerates 330/month. I'm using an Organized leader, so I get in front of his retreat and get the defensive position.

849 Jun 23: finished of Lombardy's armies & captured his 3rd heir in siege. The King was leading an army, but I didn't get lucky. His 1st and 2nd heirs are out of reach right now, being tutored away from home.

I now have potential claimants among my kids for the kingdoms of Andalusia, Bavaria, Umayyad, Mali, Middle Francia, Lombardy, and West Francia, plus duchies of Lesser Poland, Kiev, Smolensk, Vitebsk, and Yatvingia. Also, a prisoner who could give me a claim to Kingdom of Muhallabid, but I don't have room for her as a concubine right now. One of my cousin dukes also has claims on duchies of Mordva (pressable right now), Murom, Chernigov, and Pereyaslavl. I wouldn't doubt that there are other family claims, but I haven't looked for them all (181 dynasty members…). I might script up something to highlight dynasty members with claims outside the realm, or with parents with such claims. The trick is, with the parents I only want pressed claims, and there doesn't appear to be a script command to check for those. :(

Continued raiding Lombardy, West Francia, & Umayyad while I waited for the Blot to come up. During this time, I plotted to kill the Count of Vermandois (1st in line for West Francian throne). I had several of his courtiers in my prison, and when he died, they all became *my* courtiers, except his son who inherited his county. Both his sons are still in my prison, and are now 1st & 2nd heirs to West Francia, with the younger being my courtier. I was holding on to these heirs until I could press a claim for West Francia for my son (55% warscore at war start!). I can press for Duchy of Toulouse right now (almost enough to form Kingdom of Aquitaine!), but winning will release the 1st heir. I *could* give the kid a county then press his claim for the kingdom, but he seriously hates me. Besides, that wouldn't get the kingdom into my dynasty.

Didn't really "play" this weekend:

• Spent some time investigating who in my dynasty has interesting claims, or will when their mothers die. I think I may go raid Epieros soon, to capture a young woman claimant to Byzantine. *That* would be nice to get into the family. On the other hand, that could drag me in to Byzantine problems. :p

• Set up some kids with guardians.

• Started 3 stables building.

Still 850 Jan 17:

OK, I'm just not good at staying at peace. I have empire plans, and I don't want to leave them sit for years (especially weak claims). I'll just have to be careful which vassals I levy.

So, I pressed my 8-year-old son's weak claim on Toulouse while it was already in a revolt. Have to take weak claims when I can. At the same time, I holy warred for Barcelona. These 2 will give me enough land to create Kingdom of Aquitaine. I'll give that to the same son in Toulouse or the Duke of Aquitaine.

851 Jul 27:

French war finished. Didn't get all of Toulouse, because 1 county was in revolt. Near the end of the war, a host appear and also declared for Toulouse. Since Francia still has some of Toulouse, their war is still valid, but doesn't affect me. He might win, since he has 2984 event troops (reinforcing to 3450), while the French King only has 506. That's OK, I can either vassalize him or take him out myself. Of course, he started out on the far side of Francia (Friesland), and hasn't moved at all.

I stood down the Duke of Luxembourg's levy, since he's reach -49 raise levy penalty. There are some more vassals with -38 to -40, but I'll keep them a few more months. That should let me finish off the Umayyad war. And a few months ago, I sent all my retinues down Italy to go siege Épieros for that Byz. claimant. They've stopped off to do a little raiding in Apulia & Lukania, because the Andalusians declared war on the Byz., and there are a bunch of Byz. troops in the area I need to pass thru. I should have done this raid sooner, when the Emperor was low on troops and involved in an Abbasid war. Now he's back up to 11k, and I'm only bringing 9k of raiders. But odds are good he'll let me be while he's at war.

My Fylkir got ill a few months ago, but my health is very good, so I'll probably make it.

851 Oct 6:

My raiders reach Épieros… and they aren't raiding. I'm saving the game until I figure out what's going on.

Don't know what was going on with the raiders, but just leaving them sit for 4 days got the 1st money from raiding.

Just noticed that one of the chiefs in my realm is attacking Middle Francia for 1 of it's 2 counties. A couple West Francian counts are also attacking it, altho I don't see *anybody's* troops sieging. But I see I can join the war… and, oh look, my new Duke of Toulouse has 1095 troops I can levy not far away! Done! (I could offer to join my Duke of Luxembourg in putting down a revocation revolt, but he's already got 24 allies. And I could join the Host attacking the other 2 counties of Toulouse duchy, but he's not under me & he's got over 3k troops anyway. I'll have to pay more attention for wars I can join…)

851 Oct 9:

Under the Business Focus, I had a trade route event chain going. Duke Vitek of Moravia is now my friend. He's on the far side of Bavaria, but might be useful. On the other hand, he's already 61, so his usefulness is probably short-lived. He's Catholic, so I can't get marriages with him, and he won't let me tutor his kids ("hostage of a foreign power"). I can't send my seer to fix his religion. Maybe he won't be useful at all. :p Well, I still got some money, higher taxes in my capital province, and other bonuses.

851 Nov 24:

Won Barcelona. Elevated the Count of Barcelona to Duke of Barcelona & gave him all the counties.

Toulouse army just reached Lyon.

When fully reinforced, my retinue is now 10,000. Added to my max levies, total army of 50,011.

852 Mar 17:

The Emperor is dead. Long live the Emperor! He was only 39, but in the past year or two had accumulated stressed, ill, and depressed. The new Emperor is nowhere near as good, nowhere near as liked, and is already 59. Oh, and he's possessed & maimed. Lost the Kingdom of Mauretania to the Duke of Luxembourg, altho the new Emperor is his heir. On the plus side, all my levy raised penalties & truces are wiped clean…

Saving for today and getting some sleep.

Housekeeping:

Set the King of Saxony as heir to all my titles. He's about the best dynasty member, and only 23.

Handed off Barony of Utrera to the Duke of Seville.
Created Kingdom of Aquitaine, gave it and Temple of Penne to Duke of Aquitaine.
Gave Duchy of Burgundy to a young dynasty member.
Gave Duchy of Mercia to another.
Transferred Duchy of Uppland to King of Sweden.
Created Duchy of Gwynedd, gave it to Chief of Perfeddwlad.
Gave 2 demesne baronies to the King of Saxony, figuring I'll get them back when he inherits (assuming he doesn't give them away :p ).

Demesne & vassals now under the limit. All my major vassals now have positive opinion of me, altho some of them not *very* positive. Good thing I have the Great Blot available as soon as my war ends.

Lost my Steward in that shuffle, but he wasn't that good. Still have 3 Mayors and a Gydja on the council, but they kind of suck, and only 1 likes me.
• Replaced the 11 Spy with my 24 half-sister, and sent her off to Constantinople.
• Replaced the 14 Seer with a 22 Godi, and sent him to convert my Artois.
• Replaced the 19 Marshal with a 21 Duke who has no combat modifier, and set him training troops in the capital.
• Replaced the 18 Chancellor with a 20 Chief, and set him improving relations with my King of Alban.
• Appointed the 20 King of Saxony as Steward, and set him raising taxes in the capital.

Notice my vassal Merchant Republic went with the Kingdom of Mauretania. :(

Had a bunch of kids who needed guardians. 12 just in my dynasty, plus a lot more. Weirdly, 1 child in my prison can't be educated because his liege is too far away (Egypt) to interact with, even tho he gets no say in the matter.

Otherwise, not playing today. IRL housekeeping to do.

I hate to say this, but I'm considering dumping this savegame. :(

I waited a couple weeks for the dust to settle on Conclave, and I bought it yesterday. On loading my game, I find changes that I don't care for. In particular, all my stuff gets knocked back to gavelkind. I went to considerable effort to get tanistry, and I don't like the idea of giving it up. I could either keep playing with Conclave shut off, or edit the save file to preserve tanistry. At minimum, that means bumping my legalism tech up from 2 to 3 & giving myself the next admin law. I'm not sure what *else* Conclave screws with, so I don't know what else would be needed to salvage this game.

Or, I could chuck it all and start a new game…

This is going to take some thinking.
