Did not persue these further as the four year rule and leadership points probably need to be reduced to allow Africa to be colonised. Also resulted in some strange results with France or UK owning most of Africa.

Second file (GC1) only bans Russia and US from Africa and Russia from Oceania for the whole game. Also bans US from Oceania until 1890

Both mods may result in a non-fatal "fatal error" complaining of a duplicate treaty in 1890's. Just hit ignore.

The mods do keep Russia away from NZ and from Africa for most of the game.

Basically it takes a totally different view of colonisation to the mainstream game by trying to limit it to historical areas and periods.

It tries to do this by inserting long term colonial bans as treaties in the grand campaign scenario.

Its not 100% successful but it works 80% of the time in my experience. It was dropped from development for 1.03 because of this and because there is some dissent over a deterministic approach.

However - if you want to try it and / or try the approach (I think different colonisation costs will also be needed) and feed back any results will be very interested

Sure - take what you want. I use the second option myself with 1.03. The more drastic mod needs more work as I said.

Its all beta reject stuff anyway -you'd have had it today if it had made 1.03 :)

Isnt a ban absolute????

The ban uses the "stop colonising" treaty that you can ask for in the game but extends the end date. As it is a treaty then the AI can choose to break the treaty and certainly a war between the treaty parties will break the ban. Thats why I include several guarantors of the stop colonising treaties.

But I have seen Russia colonising east indies in the mid 40's but most of the time they stay out of the areas listed.

How can you break that treaty? When I accept sutch a treaty, Im not able to break it... :confused:

Anyway, let the countries have the treaty with themselves. Its hard to break a trety with yourself, atleast gamewise... :)

Hmmmmm.....not sure about that. Worth experimenting with though ;)

Iv tested it now several times, and it works fine. And you dont get any "fatal error" message either because there is only one denial treaty per nation.

Another problen though is that UK seems to have gotten a monopoly on colonialization. IMHO UK is now THE nation that can afford the raised cost regards to manpower...

Thanks Dagfinn - I'm going to try and balance that colonisation now.

I'm pretty sure that it'll need a shorter time frame and a removal of the leadership requirement. The problem with leadership is that if the country is at war it will not spend the leadership points on colonies. So if you are often involved in war like France in 1860's & 1870's you won't colonise as much the UK (whose wars are mainly over by then). I suspect that being at war also gives the AI an overall preference not to colonise - if so I'll need to allow France to colonise Africa a bit earlier.

One question comes to mind. What about Italy? I know it may be impossible to implement a ban on them but if they unite quickly they may end up snatching numerous colonies. Oh, and another thing, one could also ban Turkey not only from Africa but also from Asia (they keep snatching the Hadramaut colony early on). Anyways this mod was exactly what I was looking for, many thanks.

I would say - get rid of the ban on Belgium colonisation,

the king Leopold I and II where heavy into colonisation, many different routes where followed - most of them failed, but that doesn't mean they are forbidden to try in Victoria game,

Guatemala -with an authentic Belgian colony - buying land from UK,
Philipines - or part of them - buying land from Spain,
Nigeria - treaties - claims with local tribesmen,
Crete - buying from the Greek?

altough not always succesfull they were heavely into investigating the options, they had UK backing - and that's worth something me thinks :rofl:

Belgium is only banned from Africa until 1870 and Oceania until 1880. Which gives Belgium a 10 year head start compared to everyone else in Africa apart from UK and France.

well the answer is yes and no, even Leopold I was interested in a colony, but he failed - also that wasn't his first priority off course. But in the end they were both opportunistic and when chances were there, they tried to get it on. There was also a Belgian colony project in Guatemala in collaboration with the Britisch, but that failed,

Leopold II relied on Stanley to complete the task in Africa,

so in fact Derek's approach is very sound, the great explorers charted the main routes and rivers of the land land afterwards the colonisation could begin making a more detailed trip and get treaties from all the local tribesmen,

like I earlier said both Britisch, French, Portugese, Spanisch and Dutch had trade posts, missionaries at the banks of the Congo before 1835 :)

so having the great explorers removes a "lock" from the game, please note that there are many explorers, we have to look further then Stanley and Livingstone, :)

Have modded a GC eug file (extract attached files into scenarios folder). First version will appear as Derek's DCM beneath the four main scenarios

Im on my 2nd game with the deterministic mod and while I usually dont like games like this being to deterministic I must say I really love the way the mod gives smaller countries a chance in the Africa race.
Btw first game Russia did colonize a little in Africa before 1880 but it was only a couple of colonies so its all good ;)

Well done

I've been working on elements of the colonization system in the VIP forum and I downloaded your mod and I think this is the missing piece of the puzzle to creating a system of colonization that can be flexible yet ensure that things are not too far out of what for AIs. Combine this mod with some changes to the order of colonization in the various AIs and trimming back some of the initial holdings for certain countries (see the Colonization thread in VIP) but just want to say well done and think in a modified form would be a great addition to the VIP mod if you so choose to offer it to the mod.
