Gah, I'm having a lot of trouble with the modding (especially Europe, I pretty much regret going so wild over new borders there). :(

Oh this is a screenshot of the CSA in the Doomsday version of the Mod:

doomsdaylb6.png

As you can see Dixie claimed New Mexico and Arizona in the peace treaty back in 1863. Cuba is a puppet state (as against a Confederate state) and intervention in mExico was much later - in 1916 during the Mexican Revolution.

Errr, what happened to Sonara and Monterrey?

If you need any help in modding it then I'm sure people here will be happy to help you.

Nothing, that's just what the original DD Mod looks like. Only showing it for interest - Dixie in this AAR remains as it was in the screenshot of Part 1. :)

Europe seems especially troublesome but I suppose I can find a way around that - it has been almost two decades since the peace after all. ;) So long as Russia and Austria are ok I'll be happy.

Above: The 'Constantinople Gang' - agents in Naval Intelligence. Their Army counterparts had a less glamorous reputation.

Part 2.

"People generally see what they look for and hear what they listen for." ~ Harper Lee

The Confederate States Army Directorate of Intelligence was much like the Army as a whole: small, underfunded and overlooked. It was not - even in the claustrophobic ranks of the Confederate States Army - considered a wise career move for a young officer. It's Naval counterpart in the Secret Service Bureau (SSB) was rather more prestigous reflecting both the greater prowress of the Navy and the tradition - albeit unofficial - for the more glamorous foreign espionage to be handled by Naval Intelligence.

Nevertheless there is a certain type of man who will find such work exciting and Lieutenant Robert Taylor was that man. Twenty three years old and handsome in a rather self concious way with the neatly trimmed mustache of a young gentlemen (or at least a silver screen imagining of a young gentlemen) which complimented his dark hair and green eyes. Son of a wealthy and moderately prominent Virginian political family, graduate of the Citadel with high marks, ferociously patriotic, soundly conservative in the best Democratic tradition. A fine man. True he was young and green, somewhat limited in imagination in certain areas but his superiors felt he had ability. Besides there was such a paucity of candidates that Taylor stood out by default.

"So Lieutenant," said Captain Knox at the briefing, "as you are no doubt aware our great nation has seen better days and, God willing, will see better to come. Still we are rich country, an advanced country and with the President's recent decision to start re-arming - even if is just the navy - we can't be too careful. So I want you to work for us. There are plenty of people in Dixie who have no business being here and it's our job to keep an eye on them. What do you think officer?"

Taylor was of course estatic but confined his outward response to a simple nod of his head and a calm "I'd be honoured to serve Dixie Sir." He paused thinking then. "so who will be working with me out in the field?"

Captain Knox's mustache twitched in amusement. He reached over to his decanter and poured a generous measure of bourbon into two glasses.

"Son... you are the field angency - all of it."

~~~~~~
For January 1936 I have set my production to serial build two Louisiana - Class Battleships (level IV BB's - for some reason in the Doomsday mod their name has been changed from North Carolina) and serial build two Sumter - Class Carriers (level III CV's).
I have started researching the following techs: Early Infantry Division, Early Field Artillery, Tankette , Agrichemistry and Basic Destroyer.
I've moved the slider one towards Interventionism.
As may be obvious I've also recruited a spy for the domestic front - the CSA has 13 spies abroad but until Lieutenant Taylor no one in the Confederacy herself. :)
I'm going to try to include both the history book style (as found in the backstory) and a narrative style, which - I hope - won't clash to badly!
Above: CSS Confederate States, Great War survivor was seen as increasingly out of date by 1936
Part 3
“A ship is always referred to as she because it costs so much to keep one in paint and powder” ~ Rear Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Confederate States Navy
The worsening international scene had occurred cocurrently with a slight revival in the national economy, attributed in large part to the Long administration's welfare programme and works schemes. In January 1936 the unemployment rate stood at 15.1% - still more than twice it's rate in 1929 but a decline from the nadir of 26.2% in late 1933. The country was slowly recovering from the sustained crisis though by the standards of the late 20's international trade was still way down.
It was the dismal situation abroad that captured the attention of the Goverment however - and the press. Dixie was not generally regarded as a friend to Africa but the lawless Italian war had ignited a storm of protest across the Confederacy - an attitude strangely at odds with the same people who enthusiastically backed segregation of a third of their fellow citizens at home (though it must be stated that Confederate segregation was somewhat less severe than that of South Africa - Blacks could vote in 12 of the 17 Confederate states for instance). 1935 had also seen the announcement of rearmament by Adolf Hitler of Germany, the assassination of Michael II of Russia, the attempted assassination of Otto I of Austria (and Hungary and Bohemia and so on) and the Constantinople Crisis between Greece and Turkey which had very nearly led to war.
President Long (himself the victim of an assassination attempt in 1935) had recognised the conflicted mood of the nation: the desire at once to have greater protection while not being comitted to overseas adventurism. His solution, a reform of the Navy would please everyone except diehard pacifists as the Navy could be presented as a purely defensive measure without the odium of an expanded army (thus pleasing or at least not angering the isolationist minority) while at the same time being an effective measure to deal with international tensions (satisfying the minority of vocal interventionists in Confederate politics and media).
The Treaty of Washington had limited Dixie to a total capital ship (battleships and battlecruisers) limit of 175,000 tons - a total the 1936 navy fell considerably short of. The carrier allowance (60,000 tons) was also far from being fufilled. The aging CSS Confederate States would have to be withdrawn from frontline service, emphasing the need for substantial reform of the Navy. The Naval Act passed by Congress in Febuary allowed for the construction of an additional 4 battleships and 2 aircraft carriers by the 1940. Long, in a well recieved speech, managed to silence critics of expense by pointing out the employment oppurtunties contsruction and manning would create.
Ironically the man least pleased by the Naval Act was the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Edward I. Bourne. Bourne was more in favour of battlecruisers than battleships - too expensive and slow for his favoured 'Indirect Approach' school of naval warfare. Alas the Cherokee-class battlecruiser, the most modern design available was completely outclassed by Louisiana -class battleships (even in speed) so he had little ground to object (even to the carriers which he privately regarded as millitarily useless).
(His Army and Army Air Force counterparts, whose opinion was not recorded, might have considered him fortunate to have the luxury of such dissapointment)
As the battleship and carrier keels were laid down the carefully guarded ship blueprints would become a much sought after item for certain foreign goverments concerned over the Dixie naval buildup...
~~~~~~

I recieved a Gearing for War event leaving me with a base IC of 91 and an effective IC of 64.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to work in the old Navy in the Doomsday so I have to use the DD Navy - which is worse!

navyiiig0.png

*Sigh*

Oh well I like the idea of building up my own navy anyway and the DD Army has 4 divisions so it isn't all bad. :)

Lieutenant Taylor will indeed return, I just wanted to introduce him in the previous post. He is a fictional 'street level' character. I may or may not introduce other fictional characters for the narrative parts but I'll try and keep both styles: narrative and larger history book/political (like this updatE).

Hope you guys enjoy this. :)

It looks like your navy will be quite good, it is funny how they are upset about Ethiopia though.

Ahh the irony of a segregated confederacy upset about Italian oppression of the Ethiopians... ironic, but quite accurate for most of the western world at the time

Am indeed liking it very much. A naval build-up is all to the good - especially since it takes so damned long to build the ships.
