This is my first attempt at an AAR. I've been planning to write one for some time. Unfortunately, I never had the time to until now. This AAR is not going to be a history book, nor a pure gameplay AAR, it should be a fusion of the two. Also, I'm not looking for a world conquest. (I'm probably not good enough to pull that off anyways...lol) I actually find it to be a good thing that I'm not the best Vicky(...or Ricky...or w/e its called...I'll call it VIPcky) player, because you'll soon see mistakes I make, leading to a competitive game instead of the normal domination by a human. One more note, if you are craving a pure war AAR, this AAR is not for you. I am not planning on being an aggressive nation, but instead an economic powerhouse that only uses force when needed.

...most of my updates will be on weekdays. Have fun reading!

Hmm. Another Civil War AAR, a Confederate one none the less. Great! Always love to see how other people play as the good-old CSA.

Good luck! I'll be reading!

The American Civil War
And Birth of The Confederate States of America

civilwarg.jpg

Throughout the mid 1800s, the United States faced an empty threat of a Civil War many times. Beginning in 1849, over the assassination of Colonel Robert E. Lee.

The assassination was suspected to be an attack by a Mexican Nationalist, but after a thorough investigation, it was found to be a man native to Philadelphia by the name of Edward Johnson. Johnson was a railroad worker and former member of the House of Representatives, but was convicted of a Native American scandal. He was constructing a railroad near the shores of Georgia for importing European goods. The assassination happened during the formation of the Georgian National Guard, where Lee was in charge of overlooking the division's training. During a public military tactics demonstration, a shot pierced through Lee's shoulder and eventually led to a fatal infection. Lee died only 5 days after the incident. This led to Southerners questioning the Yanks' motives.

Next was the 2nd State Military Bill in Congress. In 1852, the state of Virginia argued for State controlled army's as well as a national army. They argued that the entire army should not be put in the hands of one power. This could lead to a totalitarianism takeover, plus has roots to dreaded socialism. Instead, the formation of State Armies, led by the state would be beneficial to the security of democracy. Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, California, and Louisiana all agreed with the bill. It would allow 1/3 of the US military to be in complete control by individual states. After passing through the House and the Senate, President Millard Fillmore vetoed the bill. It failed to receive 2/3's majority and this did not become a law. Although most states accepted the results, Texas, California, and Virgina all threatened to succeed from the Union. None actually succeeded.

Another close call to a Civil War was over the Dred Scott supreme court case in 1857. The supreme court ruled that Negros were not citizens, and therefore could not bring cases to the supreme court. Also, according to the Fifth Amendment, slaves were property and the Missouri Compromise was denying men of their property. So slavery was technically legal everywhere. Notherners found this to be outrageous and provoked violence upon the streets of Pennsylvania and Virginia. At one point, Federal troops actually fired upon a mob of angry Dixies about 15 miles north of Richmond. After this incident, the states of Virginia and North Carolina begun secret troop recruitment. South Carolina followed in 1858, Tennessee and Kentucky in 1859, and Florida in 1860.

The final straw was the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Immediately after the election, South Carolina succeeded from the Union. The United States surprisingly accepted the succession. Two days later, Texas succeeded, and the United States refused to recognize the nation, but chose not to interfere. Then three days later, on July 11th, Virginia succeeded. This was too much for the US. The US did not declare war upon the Virginian Republic, but crossed the border with federal troops and attacked Richmond. The attack consisted of around 15,000 men. The Virginian Republic mobilized it's state recruited army of 32,000 men. The battle lasted only a day, due to the Union retreating with the news of North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida succeeding as well. These states came together and called their selves the Confederate States of America.

Texas joined the Confederate States only five days after declaring independence. Virginia refused to become a part of the Confederate States, but fought along side them. The plan was simple, capture New England. The nations would work together to storm New England, but before so, a Confederate and Virginian diplomat was sent to Washington DC to make a compromise leading to a peaceful resolution of the successions. No agreement could be made, and the diplomats warned the Union of a massive Confederate Army that will march through their lands with ease. The Virginian diplomat joked that he had an appointment to have tea with some of the Brits in Canada before the end of the week. Although false threats are commonly used during wars, president Lincoln took much worry to this "massive Confederate Army."

With no governments set in place for either nation, each decided to hold elections, but for the time being, Governor of Virginia John Letcher was put in charge of every aspect of the Virginian Republic. Senator Jefferson Davis was placed as temporary president of the Confederacy. Both of these men had to earn their spot in the upcoming elections, so neither was sworn in. Although the people of Virginia wanted to become a part of the Confederacy, Letcher was strictly against it.

The nations decided upon a plan. They knew the Union's military was comprised of nearly double that of their's, so they had to strike hard and fast. They agreed that the entire army of Virginia was to Strike from Wheeling to Pittsburgh, then to Philidelphia, and then travel North until they reach Canada. The Confederates were going to place small militias along the borders and use the bulk of their army to secure Washington DC and then split. The split would send nearly 1/3 of the army west, and the rest north. This was a bold plan, but no other plan could possibly work, since both France and the British declared strict neutrality and the Union had nearly double the military strength.

The strikes were quick, and the Army of Virginia secured Pittsburgh with nearly no resistance. The battle was won by overwhelming numbers. The Union only consisted of 4,000 troops stationed in Pittsburgh, while there were 32,000 in the Army of Virginia. The next step was for the Confederates to secure the Union's capital. The attack was the bloodiest of the entire war. 210,000 Confederate soldiers marched into a heavily fortified Washington DC consisting of a 160,000 troop garrison. The battle lasted nearly 5 days, and the Union continued to try to reinforce their garrison by in the end committing 220,000 soldiers to a losing cause. Washington was secured on September 17th, and Lincoln began to sweat.

The Army of Virginia began their march to Philadelphia right as the Union mobilized 360,000 men. The men were located in Maine, but they were marching south. On September 21st the army arrived. Philadelphia put up little resistance due to the Federal soldiers just returning from a devastating defeat at Washington. Easily, Philadelphia was captured.

Only two nights after the battle for Philadelphia, 100,000 Federal troops, fresh from mobilization attacked. With nearly no chance at victory, the Virginian troops were on the brink of retreat until the saw in the distance Confederate flags waving and reinforcements arriving. Although it was a hard fought battle, the Union failed in retaking Philadelphia, and lost almost 3/4 of their attacking men. The combined losses for the Confederates and Virginians was nearly 85,000 men.

With these two excruciating battles, the dreams of the Dixies seemed great on the outside, but in reality, the Confederate Army was nearly gone, and there was nothing left of the Army of Virginia. Manpower reached zero. With a desperate attempt for peace a diplomat was sent to the new US capital of New York City. The diplomat warned Lincoln himself that that was only half of the Confederate Army, and unless peace was resolved, Washington, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia would be burned to the ground. The demands were for Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, as well as the Confederate States of America and the Virginian Republic be recognized as independent nations. Lincoln reluctantly accepted on July 11th, 1961. Exactly a year after Virginia declared independence and the war began.

Immediately following the news of a swift Southern victory, the Virginian Republic officially joined the Confederacy after taking a vote. 93% of the voters wished to join. Thus, the Confederate States of America was formed. The American Civil War will always be remembered as the biggest fluke in all of history.

I forgot to announce that I played this scenario from the beginning as the United States and switched as soon as the Civil War hit. It was kind of a last minute decision to change to the CSA. So, I built the US up, and thats why their reserves are so high. So it will be a big challenge to top the US.

Ah! A wonderful idea for an AAR! Here's hoping you can win the War of Northern Aggression and restore States' Rights! Your cause is just, your heart is pure, and your people are willing! Go, fight, win!

Lol, we aren't rebels...we're Dixies!

Thanks! I'm planning on trying to avoid a second war, but if I have to, I'll fight them.

Actually, while playing as the US, I got both Lee and Jackson around 1840. Then somehow, they both died before 1860. So I made a story up for Lee, and Jackson didn't need one, because he never became famous. And the US gained Columbia from the 54-40 event. The rest are Native tribes. In VIP, North America is mostly Native at the start of the game, and eventually they get pushed back more and more until there is nothing left of them by events.

Suscribed! It's always a pleasure see Confederate victory.

Go ahead, Dixie!

The Birth of a Nation
But Will It Survive to Grow Old?

southwins.jpg

Although the Civil War was a victory, the new nation was not accepted by the international scene. Of all the major powers, only the United States recognized the CSA as an independent nation. And this was only due to the agreements of the Treaty of New York to end the war. England and France both agreed that the CSA was worth keeping an eye on, but neither one thought the "rebels" would last any longer than a decade.

As soon as the war began, Jefferson Davis placed 30 men in the senate. 12 Democrats, 12 Whigs, and 6 Defenders of the Confederacy. Just like Jefferson, these men were just placeholders until the elections in March. An agreement was made to make no changes unless absolutely necessary until the CSA's first president was decided upon. As soon as the winners of the elections were declared, they would move into power due to the fragile state of the nation. The upcoming elections could make or break the nation, because each of the three presidential candidates had their own view of how to run the nation.

Democratic Party Candidate

jeffersondavis.jpg

Jefferson Davis was the obvious choice for Democrats. He led the Confederacy to a victory against the Union, and was proclaimed by Democrats as the "Father of the Confederacy." Davis had many plans for the nation. The first thing he wanted to do was industrialize the nation to compete with the industrial power up North. He found this to be of the up-most importance. To gain the money to industrialize, he planned on raising tariffs and lowering taxes to avoid putting to much strain on the average citizens. And with any extra money, he planned on lowering the national debt. Hopefully, this would lower the economic strain that was experienced during the war. Most of the nation's military turned Democrat when they heard his plan to decrease the size of the military and improve relations with the US to avoid future wars. Jefferson Davis called his plan the "Davis Plan" and was sure that he would win the election.

John Bell was chosen as the Whig Party Candidate. After losing the US's election to Abraham Lincoln, Bell ran again under the Whig Part instead of the Constitutional Union Party, only this time for the CSA. The south was already familiar with Bell since he won the states Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee in the election of 1860, plus Lincoln wasn't even included in the ballots in the south. He was a die-hard former US Whig and Know Nothing, and once those Parties failed, he joined the Constitutional Union Party. Now he was back to his original Party. He planned to industrialize the nation as well as stabilize the economy. To do this, he's going to place Dixies in the new factories, and force the Yanks and slaves to work on the fields. "Also, he argued, taxes must be raised to combat the national debt." His military strategy is to build a Confederate navy as well as ease tensions with the north to avoid another war. "Another war, he stated, will cripple the already crippled nation."

John Letcher, governor of Virgina, as well as former placeholder of the presidency in the Virginian Republic was chosen as the candidate representing the Defenders of the Confederacy Party. This emerging party focused on the idea of citizen cooperation to allow the government to take more control to ensure the safety of the new nation. Some believe this could lead to a dictatorship, but others say it's a necessity to preserving the Confederacy. Letcher planned on drastically strengthening the land armed forces of the CSA and industrializing the nation. Also, he believed that it was very important to take advantage of Mexico's weak military and expand south. With his election, the restrictions on work hours would be lifted to increase work efficiency, and the un-employed would be given jobs in the military, thus ending un-employment. Although he hails from Virginia, most of his supporters were located in Florida.

Welcome, I hope you enjoy!

Indeed, it is! And welcome!

...I guess we're forgetting about the Texans. Can't forget those guys!

Enewald
Hmm, that's sure a stretch. I think that will mostly be up to where our nation goes politically. With this new Defenders of the Confederacy Party, its possible if they can take and maintain the nation's platform for decades.

And yes, those damn Yanks don't deserve proper treatment!

longlee
Thank you, I really appreciate that! Glad to see my first AAR isn't a disaster =P

As soon as the treaty of New York was signed, the Union handed over the legal rights to the states Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. They also gave the CSA New Mexico and Oklahoma as territories. Not even a day after the treaty was signed, New Mexico threatened to leave the CSA if they were not announced a state and given state rights. Jefferson Davis, fill in president, agreed to allow New Mexico to become a state. Oklahoma remained set aside for the Cherokee Tribe.

And now the game begins! Like I said before, updates on weekends are gonna be rare. I just luckily had some time today.

Awesome! Thanks a lot for the demographic/economic/pies update, I love those!

The most salient issue in my eyes is the enormous portion of your population that are soldiers. Surely they can be put to better use actually helping the economy. At least, for now. :p
