Just noticing this thread. I'd be interested in a standard game if one is getting started at some point. Played by snail-mail back in the 80s when Boardman still was running games.

And HYWRogue, doesn't running a Hundred Year War keep you busy enough?

Unfortunately, we already have seven players for a game. However, I can put you on the alternate list if that's alright. Thanks!

France is always a great country if you want to be active throughout the entire game. Worst case scenario, you can always retreat to the Ibearian provinces and hold if England, Germany and/or Italy decide to gang up on you.
There lies the threat though. You need to make sure that at least two of those countries are active in other theaters.

For my 2 cents, England makes a good "Getting your toes wet" game. It is very difficult for countries to invade the British isle. As a result, the British player is usually found at the end of most games. The only problem with this country is that if you don't expand to mainland Europe, you won't be considered a real threat and your first game may end in you holding nothing mroe than the British isle.

Russia / Turkey are also a bit easier to play because of the board edges. You never have to worry about being attacked on those borders. ;)
Actually, I don't think Russia is easy to play for a beginner. There are two distinct theatres of operation for Russia to contend with, and if Russia is played poorly at the beginning it can easily collapse under attack from 3-4 other players within the first few years. Russia also has the largest number of starting options.

On the other hand, Turkey and England have the best defensive positions, and Turkey has the most limited starting options.

I'm going to use random draws via TI-89 calculator. Still waiting on Anzu for confirmation.

Hells, bells, I don't think Russia is easy to play at all. I've played a lot of Diplomacy, and I totally suck as Russia - I've had two good games, and ended both of the with 3SC. :D

And both of those games are in my top three games! The most recent being the first forum game here where I was a substitute (and is reported on elsewhere).

Btw, while I agree with England and Turkey as good choices, I'll throw Italy into the ring. Italy, unlike, England, can't really get *jumped* early in the game, so has good potential for a beginner.

New Players and Countries

In the San Francisco Bay Area where we have 4 tournaments a year it seems, and we are all very newbie friendly we have come up with the following placement for new players:
if one or two they are placed in France or Turkey
if there are three, then all three are placed in the West as England/France/Germany

Russia is a hard country to play as it involves looking at a large part of the board and interactions with a lot of people. That is why Turkey is good for new players as they have a corner to sit in.

England is not good for new players because of the complications of convoy orders and new players have a real problem with the northern part of the map especially with things like St. Petersburg to Norway, and more importantly
Kiel to Baltic or Baltic Convoying Army Kiel to Livonia or Sweden.

When countries border like Belgium and Holland along a straight coast new players have no problem in seeing fleets going from one to another, however when there is a match up like Naples and Apulia or Sweden and Norway, you would be surprised at how often new players have a problem understanding that they can go from one to another without first going out to sea.

Anyway, that is the experience here in California./... :)

While it's true that Italy has a somewhat good defensive position, I think it's cruel to force a beginner to try to figure out what to do with his units as Italy. :p

Alright, I still have not heard from Anzu. Therefore, though I don't like not giving someone a chance to join, I will put Martin Gilbey in the game. I will send out the information via this thread and email either tonight or tomorrow. If Anzu responds before I post, then he can be in. Otherwise, Martin will be playing. If this is a problem, please contact me.

Thanks.

Hello all,

Alright, since Anzu has not replied, I have placed Martin Gilbey in the game.

Country assignments:

England: Vermithrax
France: Martin Gilbey
Germany: Persephony
Italy: State Machine
Austria-Hungary: HYWRogue
Russia: Ironside
Turkey: Innocent

Y'all can use whatever form of communication you wish, but I would prefer that the thread stay as clean as possible(besides the public comments and such). All orders should be given to me via email, please.
The country assignments were entirely random, so if you don't like a country, too bad.

Spring 1901 Orders Deadline:
Friday April 8, 2005 at 6:00 p.m (1800 hours) CST (Midnight GMT)

Please be sure to include your country in your orders email.

I am debating whether to use Realpolitik or not, so the map might change.
And speaking of the map, thanks to Lazboy-General for the starting map that he nicely donated.

Thanks,

Leglaen

I'll repeat here that I consider it a sign that the random draw gave State Machine the country shaped like a dagger. ;)
Hmph. Better than being a country that looks like a cauliflower... ;)

About 40 hours left until orders are due. I have 2 out of 7 orders in, but don't be alarmed.

Did this guy just admit that he is a salesman?

You can bet everyone will now read his emails twice! ;)
THAT just set your Diplomacy back from the start!

Give me Holland... it's in a crappy location... sure it's got seaside views but it's damp and cold in the winter... Brest on the other hand - yeah, that's where the smart money is...

Never tell people THAT in Diplomacy.
That's why I NEVER tell anyone that I am a Used Car Salesman... :eek:o

Just decided to let everyone know why I keep such weird hours. Besides, I"m not a salesman, I'm a consultant that provides people with the best information possible so they can make the best decision to meet their real estate needs. I'm quite proud of my client referrals. ;)

Oh. :eek:o

I'm sorry :eek:o

I really did not mean to offend you or mis-label you so...
I'll tell you what - to make ammends - if we game together in the future you can have Brest AND Holland AND Belgium too! :D

There, fixed. :)
