How do you do press via Internet? Everyone's gonna know who you are by your forum login (if done here) or email address if done by email. Maybe we could each make a forum ID like "France-Dip4" and have a thread here to post white press so others could follow along?

I'm in, btw. What's the frequency, one a week?
In PBeM games, press is submitted to the GM along with your orders. The GM then publishes the press along with the adjudication. This does mean that you have to think what to say to influence things for the following turn!!!

P.S. Sorry had to leave computer mid-message and so didn't see the GM's reply

My preferences are Standard, then Gunboat (or vice versa), then 1898.

Another alternate worth mentioning is 1900 - I've never played it, but have heard good things about it. I think there's a little more land to the east, and one can "transport" in some fashion from the Mid Atlantic to the Suez Cannal. Though, I don't see the variant in my Realpolitik... And Youngstown would be kinda cool - I only played it once and as China got jumped by Russia and Japan...

Edit: decided to commit, but my email also got bounced...

I would be willing to play...
however I am a little confused by what you are all saying
at times the term 'press' is used by the email 'auto judges' to mean communication between players. Traditional postal magazines (zines)
call Press Releases the stories that the players would write for publishing with their moves by the gamesmaster in the GM's magazine to give the game some flare.

Here are some over views

1. Standard Game
a. Players communicate with each other through private emails,
b. send moves to the GM and
c. may write period pieces or general news items/ propaganda etc as 'Press Releases' which could be published on the Forum

2. Standard Game: Wilson fomat
a. Players communicate with each other but ONLY through the open pages of the forum.
b. send move to the GM in private

3. Standard Game: Restricted Communications
a. Players may not communicate with each other except through the open pages of the forum and then may only send ONE message a turn WITH their
orders for publishing.
b. moves sent to the Gm in Private

Edi,
I've only ever played with Human GMs, and certainly the 'auto judges' definition of press is confusing!!! Of your definitions above number 1. I would agree as being "Standard" (non-gunboat), and 3. is the closest to what I would term "Gunboat", except that all communication goes via the GM.

Leglaen,
My Yahoo account says that your Yahoo account does not exist!!

I'm strongly in favor of the standard, I may offer my place to someone else if we go with another option. I'm just not a big can of the "gunboat" variant, it really seems to remove the most important aspect of the game for me.

But I'm certainly happy to let the game go whatever way the majority of players want, I just may not want to play it and I am sure another player could be found :)

Martin, I have changed to a Hotmail account, Leglaen@hotmail.com which should work. This goes for everyone. Please resend/send to the above email account.

I'll wait and see who wants to play which type. Personally, I would prefer to have everyone agree on the type, but if we can't get that, then I'll settle for less.

Thanks

Variant Fiend

If we're ranking preferences, mine is

1897
standard
Gunboat w/ press releases and maybe forum chat (optional)

Looks like it's executive decision time for the GM.

Not quite yet. So far in this thread we have Innocent and State Machine for Standard and Persephony for 1898. Martin Gilbey, HYWRogue, Anzu, and Vermithrax have not made a choice.

Note: Ironside and Edi, unfortunately, were not in time. However, you guys can be our alternates, or if one of the above players does not want to play, Ironside and then Edi can step in.

Also, I only have one email, from a Dennis Moore. Now, unfortunately, I am not a deity, and so I was unable to connect Mr. Moore with a name of a member of the forum. (In other words, could Dennis please stand up and be recognized?) ; )

Thanks a bunch.

Much obliged, Persephony

As of now I have 3 out of 7 confirmations. Obviously, it has only been a few hours, so I'm not worried. Also, Vermithrax has declared his support for Standard, which makes 3 so far. So, I'll wait until I get all confirmations in..and then we shall see, but it is looking like Standard. If this is a problem for any player, than please alert me as soon as possible.

Thanks

Alright, I have 5 out of 7 confirmations, still need Martin and Anzu to confirm. As for country draws, I was considering doing random picks, but if y'all want to do preference lists, than I will be glad to do that.

As for press, I think that, if we play the standard game(as it increasingly looks like, sorry Persephony), then I would just go with the standard press version. I.e., y'all can say what you want in private emails, you email your moves to me, and if you want to do so, can publish period pieces/general news in the thread (Basically, this is the option 1 from the above post by Edi).

As for France...well, it depends on your opponents. Statistically, France/Russia win the most(I think) and they both have good positions but everyone has their own opinion on which country is the best...well, except for Italy. ;)

Hope this helps.

Not to sound over-bothered, but I did respond before Vermithrax, Martin Gilbey and HYWRogue :D Anyway, backup or not, I'd go for Standard, 1898 and Gunboat, in that order.

E-mail on its way.

I have asked him to promote you above me in the list.

France for your life?

France is always a great country if you want to be active throughout the entire game. Worst case scenario, you can always retreat to the Ibearian provinces and hold if England, Germany and/or Italy decide to gang up on you.
There lies the threat though. You need to make sure that at least two of those countries are active in other theaters.

For my 2 cents, England makes a good "Getting your toes wet" game. It is very difficult for countries to invade the British isle. As a result, the British player is usually found at the end of most games. The only problem with this country is that if you don't expand to mainland Europe, you won't be considered a real threat and your first game may end in you holding nothing mroe than the British isle.

Russia / Turkey are also a bit easier to play because of the board edges. You never have to worry about being attacked on those borders. ;)

:eek:o Guess I skipped post #6! Sorry about that!

With Ironside's confirmation, I still need Anzu to email me. Once that is done, I will post here and email you the countries/deadlines/map/etc. And if Anzu doesn't show in a day or two, then we have Martin here, which would work out.

Thanks.

Just noticing this thread. I'd be interested in a standard game if one is getting started at some point. Played by snail-mail back in the 80s when Boardman still was running games.

And HYWRogue, doesn't running a Hundred Year War keep you busy enough?

Been retired from there for many a year, now. ;) I keep saying if I win the lotto, I'm buying the rights from Jim and Al and revamp the game, including a graphical interface.

I resurrected this moniker in case some former HYW players might be here. HYW certainly had its share of politicking and manuevering!
