How does subbing a Dip game work? With each game fundamentally being based on the relationships between participants, a sub could and would totally throw the balance by coming in for a turn or two, surely?
Subs are in place should a player need to take a leave of absence from the game...either temporarily or permanently. Should such an event occur, it's usually better that a well informed observer step in to take the player's position than for the game to languish or be abandoned just because one player quit.
Subs do throw the diplomatic situation for a loop, but they are a fact of life in PBEM Dip, and causng the diplomatic balance to realign itself tends to breathe new life into a game.
For my Subs, what I tend to do is include the interested individual on the mailing list I post to the players. This keeps the sub informed and as up-to-date as the players on the situation in the game, giving the potential sub a much better understanding of who is doing what and why. Should a player have to leave, I post a private message first to the subs I have observing to see if any would like to take the position. If, after 48 hours I have no response, then I post the open position on the forum from which the game is being hosted. Essentially, Subs are given first dibs on any open positions as they become available.
