By my liberal actions in the grant rights box, the country just switched to democracy. And now it uses parliamentarism. So what does this parliament do in the game? Is that some transparent function?

Also, my people's counciousness is rising everywhere!
Militancy is decreasing though. :) The manual says the counciousness is the "number of people who is willing to change society to their betterment"... one can interpret that as being the number of people from that POP in which will vote accordingly to their issues, or the election participation? (I gave everyone the right to vote)

I got a lot of liberals, about 40% many places, but the polls (pie chart) states that conservatives are in the lead... Suddenly the election results came:  Liberals won! So why is that?
(I had no rotten bouroughs events)

Once your government has certain policies enacted, the government type changes.

Consciousness basically effects how your pops will vote... if I recall, high consciousness means they vote for the more extreme parties of their ideology, low consciousness means they might vote for the "wrong" party all together! Not sure how important a role issues play in how a pop chooses to vote..

All of Arkestra's posts have been angry for... about a year now. It's his tradition :).

Sort of on topic - is there any conceivable way to deliberately devolve yourself out of democracy, by taking away voting rights for example? Could I as the US say "No more presidential elections - like it or lump it"?

It depends on the party in power, I'd think. It means, however, that you can't devolve voluntarily, as the people would have to elect the extremists first.

The pie-chart in country view tells ideologies of all pops, the political screen polls chart only takes into account those who can vote. Although you seem to have full suffrage, the people living in your colonies, if not granted statehood, can't vote.

Also, people might vote other parties than their ideology tells them to, for instance if there's no socialist party the socialist pops vote for the party best suited for them.

Allright, so during this election many conservative pops voted for the liberals , and that's why they (to my suprise) won. I believe this to be caused by the issues of those pops... I got some events in which I could choose changes in both first and secondary issues for some states. And I tended to choose the most liberal for them.

So traditionally conservative pops (like soldiers and so) which had a majority of liberal issues, would be willing to vote liberal. That's great, I can influence people! :D

so i'm understanding that if your country is a democracy, then you have no power at all regards to building or whatever since you are teh "executive" power which only commands teh millitary

No, the parliament do not have very much power. I guess I'm playing the government (ruling party) and I can build and trade as usual, but the ruling party has to stay, the king cannot kick them out and insert a new one. Now I had 'Liberalarna' winning all the elections, so the budgeting is limited with those caps... I cannot bleed the people dry! I guess because I'm playing the liberal government rather than the king now. :p

No. In democracy you can't choose the ruling party. Parties have different policies in issue, for instance limiting taxation: high minimum for planned economy, low maximum for laissez faire. There are also restrictions to making social reforms.

All these restrictions are around in non-democracies, but there you can choose the party most suited for your policies.

Pluralism an Plurality

Now, I also noticed some capitalists and aristocats being affected by the plurality percentage. (shown in the FOG window) I interpret that as being the the percentage in which power is being distibuted by the government to the bureaucracy.

As I have granted total suffrage, all pops are allowed to vote and after that some bureaucartic and democratic events happened, and plurality percentage started to rise. My bet is that those capitalists don't like it because they would have had more power if the people the and organizations had less. ;)

Note:
In the issues pie chart there is also something called pluralism.
I think this is another thing, that must be the religious minority issue as the manual decribes. Or am I wrong ?

What will happen when those aristocats and capitalists gets a con = 10 ? Will they just stop investing in state bonds or emmigrate (outflag) ?

Hint of the day: 4303, State and Government

If you want to really influence the direction of a nation guided by voters, however many are allowed the vote, the important branch of research is 430x: Political Thought. In fact, it is extremely important for EVERYBODY. Commerce and industrial techs have their uses, but the cultural techs own the very SOUL of your nation.

Each tech in it opens up for inventions that can change the direction of your country, some of them with quite radical results. Of particular interest is tech 4303, as it opens for a number of binary choices that will affect your country radically based on your choice.

Aristocracy vs. Meritocracy is the conservative/liberal choice. Both choices carry substantial benefits for the type of society you choose as the way your country is developing. E.g. if you are a country that lets the plurality rule, then meritocracy is almost certainly the right choice for you. If you just want to cling to power without listening to the plebes, choose aristocracy.

Clericalism vs. Anti-clericalism - either choice can create interesting situations short term, but long term your choice will be watered down as people's interests change.

Bureaucracy vs. Nepotism is the easy choice. This choice mainly affects random events, and those for bureacracy are in general, better than those for nepotism. There is hardly ever any reason to go for nepotism, save for style, of course.

And finally, we come to the reason that I started writing this hint in the first place. Somebody asked: Who do my POPs vote for, and why?

The answer is this. A POP votes for either his ideology (conservative, liberal, &etc) or his dominant and secondary issues (jingoism, protectionism, &etc). Thus a liberal POP that votes based on its issues may very well end up voting for a conservative party, if the conservative party's issues are closer to the POPs issues than whatever passes for a liberal party. This can happen over time, as POPs issues change with the times - or are affected by events. (Of course, their ideology may also change, as a result of consciousnees). This creates problems for those nice people at gallup putting together the polls, for they tend to poll people based on ideology. :D

..Which brings us to:

Populism vs. Establisment, the fourth of the "vs" inventions of 430x, allows you to choose between having people predominantly voting by populism (issues) or establishmen (ideology)

This is indeed a cool feature!
I chose Populism, because I wanted a minority governent to get a chance to rule. ;)

Allright, that's what confused me in the first place...
This pie chart is helpful anyway, as long as I keep in mind the issues in which the pops have as well. I actually managed to get through a conservative government through war issues (jingoism) and the nation is also at war, so this is just great! :D

Yep! Showing the enemy the taste of cold steel is, by Jingo, one of the good ways to get conservatives or reactionaries elected.

I can't find one either... Mostly I guess the effects of these issues will be how the people will vote, as PE said above. They might have other effects too? In that case I think it's got something to do with consioussness modifiers... Hmm, not sure really.

ah, this topic will save me from making a new thread.

So if I understand correct I've found the reason why my game politics are weird =

- in the polls it's 40% conservative, 40% socialist, 20% liberal,
- in the country overview it's 40/40/40,

but when you click on the party and watch the result I'll see this=

10% conservative, 20% socialist, 60% liberal, 10% communist,

?

so the truth is that the liberal party is appealing to the pops, so major and secondary issues are very important in my country,

but what triggers the difference between voting for ideologie and secondary and primary issues ??? Is it consciousness ?

There's a random event that allows you to choose to have your POPs vote based on ideology or to have them vote based on issues.
