The purpose of the map is to provide clear, simple to understand information. That clarity is lacking in the current incarnation of the terrain map-mode.

I can live with it though, at least until patches/mods help.

Steve.

What is the problem, because the time moves very slowly? I put it on the fastest speed.

The problem is that I can't see at a glance what the terrain in a province is, without waving my mouse pointer around. A simple colour code - white for clear, grey for mountains, brown for hills, green for forest, blue for ocean, for example - would make things an awful lot clearer.

Hmm, I played every available country and the game seemed to run okay and all that. One thing was kinda weird however, I know the AI makes theaters if one theater has too much to do but right after I conquered Poland and turned my attention to the Low Countries/France the AI made a Wien HQ in Poland, it sat right next to my OKW so what was the purpose of that? The theater view didn't switch either, there was OB West and OKW, like before.

Also, while playing the British my convoys were being raped by the German subs. Most of my fleet (even Home Fleet) where just sitting on their ass doing nothing even though some other minor parts of the fleet where hunting these subs. Why doesn't it just send in everything?

Lag each day like EU3 each month... and small lags each hour :(
+ Scrolling the map jumps faar faaar away. Every event, message, tab opens with +/- 3 up to 5 sec delay (sometimes worse...) - well, to be correct, its with everything I open from leaders to divisions, provinces etc...

XP Professional (SP3 - IIRC)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+
2048MB DDR2
NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT 256MB

Are my spec low? I run most (not all of course) games at full parameters.

I've been checking out the Demo of HoI3 as well, and while the depth and overall gameplay look very promising (tho it will take some time to learn it all I guess), the thing that struck me most was the rather extreme lag and choppy playing experience.

While compared to todays standards my machine it's top-notch anymore, but given the system-reqs of the game I've seen, my PC should be more-then-capable of handling this game.

Specs of my machine:
Gigabyte P35-DS3L motherboard
Core 2 Duo E8400 CPU (no-overclock or tempering-with what-so-ever)
2x 1GB OCZ Platinum XTC PC6400 DDR2 RAM (and I intend to upgrade to 4GB sometime soon)
EVGA GeForce 9800GTX+ 512 MB grapics-card
Soundblaster Audigy 4 soundcard
2x 250GB Samsung Spinpoint
Samsung DVD-toaster
OS: Windows XP Pro SP3 fully patched, and all the latest device-drivers installed for available hardware components

Those of you with a lot of lag, could you please post your computer specs so I can try to find a pattern?

ASUS A8N-E 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice 2.2GHz
3GB DDR400
Windows XP SP3
512MB GeForce 9500GT

I don't have any issues when the game is paused. At the slowest speed, I also don't have many issues, but speeding it up causes interface lag, and scrolling lag.

It *always* happens just prior to a message being displayed in the log, or when a popup is about to come up. Also, as the game went on (middle of October) it seemed to get more and more sluggish.

Sigh..
i let the AI control my toops during the poland invasion to see how well it could do and it took poland. I then ordered them to defend the maginot line and they all movied to the soviet border:confused: so i canceled the order and moved them to the french line myself, i then gave them a blitzing order to paris and what do they do? they SR back to poland :mad:

I love the game. Some questions/suggestions:

Questions:
1. I don't understand why build times are higher than default. There is no mention of increased cost/times in tech area, ministers, or doctrines that I could see. The cost seems to be reduced with the practical value.

2. What is the cost for upgrading units? I can't find any information on this. The upgrade system is no longer big steps (1918 to 1936 infantry) but can have minor steps (improve small arms, then upgrade AT weapons...). I would like to understand the costs better.

3. In the doctrine section, do HQ improvements apply to only HQ brigades, or all units under the HQ?

Suggestions/Comments

4. The pause display will take a little getting used to. I am familier with most games displaying "paused". But HOI3 gives you the pause button if you want to pause. Color coding is nice. I'm sure after 24 consecutive hours of playing, this won't even cross my mind anymore.

5. I hate the battle result window. How can I be the only one? First, I want to know if I won, which is displayed nicely. Then second, I want to know the relative casualties (did I take more or less than the opponent). But the display reads reverse for the two sides. So it displays A:B compared to B:A, and I would prefer A:B vs A:B.

6. The brigade production window appears to have the cost/manpower flipped. Note that I am not talking about the division production window.

7. I would have liked to see more wartime laws. It seems that once you are at war, all laws pretty much go to the extreme. The peacetime laws have a lot of different levels which is nice.

Thanks for the wonderful game/demo

Battle mechanics in the manual (poss. inconsistency)?

Dear community:

Trying to get this right, I consulted the manual before actually playing and on p. 69 found something I cannot resolve: They say a battle consists of one-hour-rounds, which itself consist of several phases (firing and other), which might again be subdivided into "shot x".

It says that a unit will pick a random target to fire at "every round". Which "round": Does it pick one target for the whole hour or does it pick one target per "shot"-loop?

Your help will be appreciated.

Thx
Notger.

To my best knowledge a much better province naming scheme in Poland should be like this (click to see larger version):

The relative directions between cities are almost like in real life, also I have tried to fit every city on it's side of major rivers (this is very important from strategic point of view). City names used are voivodeships and counties, except in Volhynia and Polesia when they were much bigger than in the west and I had to use names of some communes or municipalities.

I hope all (or at least some) changes will be able to make into vanilla HOI3 as time passes, like they made into EU3. Using names of cities founded in 1970's or placing others way off from their real location including bad side of the river is not that good for gameplay and historical feeling.

Also the game seems extremely unresponsive and theres little things that should be allowed to do.
as you see i circled 2 units in the same province.
unit 1 is attacking the enemy while unit 2 is walking to another province. but there is no way of selecting just the units who are walking or the ones who are attacking. you have to click on all the units in the province at once and find out the mystery of which units are doing what and with every single unit change its orders. you should be allowed to simply drag a box over either/or unit groups 1 and 2
hoi3unresponsive-1.jpg

You seem to have the wrong units selected there, because in the same situation I have handy red or green arrows showing which units are moving and which are attacking, both on the map and on the unit boxes on the left. Given that, it's quite easy to just hit the Xs on the units I don't want leaving me with all the moving or all the attacking units selected.

Ok, I decided to not buying it until some of the bigger issues have been solved. I have all the confidence that everything will be patched and that we will be getting a NI style expansion that makes the game great again. Although I don't think the game should've gone gold with how it is now.

I've got a PhenomII X4 940, HD4870 512MB with 4GB ram, running on Vista 64. The game is slow and time doesn't flow fluently (the clock pauses several times a day). My system may not be the ultimate system it's certainly above the average PI gamer.

Normally I don't bitch about the map at all but this is ridiculous, has the map even been checked before given the OK? I'm not someone that'll bitch about moving the border a few pixel or renaming a hex because town xyz is actually smaller than abc but c'mon. Some of the largest cities of the time are misplaced, quite obviously. Also, what is the purpose of having urban type hexes when Tokyo and Koln aren't urbanized but Arnhem is. What does urban actually mean? And I want to see the province names, please! Johan said that it was done like this (not showing them until 5 seconds and than still not showing all) because the graphical cards couldn't handle it. But why make a game with this much provinces if you know beforehand most computers won't be able to handle it? Can't you save the gigantic map for HoI4 or an expansion?

Also, I disliked the unhistorical outcomes that EUIII had but that's ok for the type of game. Some of the stuff that happened in my Germany game were quite troubling. Finland and Switzerland joining the Allies? Guanqxi Clique going to Germany? Italy conquering France? Imagine what would happen if you would play from 1936 onwards. The game would look nothing like WWII.

Also, I really liked the theater command. Well done! Except I couldn't order it to defend certain areas while going on the offensive at the same time. How am I supposed to attack France and defending Kiel at the same time? I applaud the Allied AI for invading it, but it's still not determined to do it. Why only land 1 division in Germany?

All in all I think these problems can all be fixed but I'm not paying to be a beta tester anymore. Not after the farce of ETW (I know not a PI game, but I'm just not doing it anymore).

EDIT: oh yeah, PLEASE give us auto sliders.

Also a useful addition would be the possibility to see some information about unit strength under each HQ. For example when I select lets say 1st Army HQ I would like to see, something like 75.698/80.000 meaning, that in the command tree attached to this HQ is right now 75.698 men with the current full state being 80.000. Right now we have to open every other HQ until we reach divisions and is thus very hard to find out how strong every army is...

EDIT: Otherwise I learned how to orient in this. If you have some problems, I would recomend UK, where you have time to play with it a bit and get more familiar. Only this little problem makes it too complex for my liking.

EDIT2: Oh, I almost forgot. Also nice addition would be ability to move HQ with all its attached units at once. Something like group move in The Operation Art of War
