Demo Mod: 100-127 AD - Now Available

OK all! The third version 0.03DEMO is available - Fixed those stupid issues I made before - all proper files should be in this release. It's pretty sick looking... I gotta wonder how anyone ever got the best of Rome... Try playing as one of the tribes or the Picts and declare war on them -- it's OWNAGE.... Obviously this is going to take some insane balancing once I finish with territory and make new units etc.

Download CURRENT version (0.03DEMO) HERE

I'm in the process of working on an example mod for you guys for the demo. This Mod will require a little imagination since I can't edit the game's years in the demo. I'm currently finishing up The Roman Empire, and Aksum. The Mod will include the following:

Years 100-127 AD - Basically pretend that 1492 is 100 AD

The following history will be added:

Trajan (98–117)

112 - Trajan conquers and annexes Armenia

112 - Rome declares war on Parthia

112-116 - Rome captures the cities of Babylon, Seleucia, Ctesiphon.

116- Rome Captures Mesopotamia and releases it as a vassal state. Rome also captures the city of Susa. Rome vassalises Parthia. (This represents the puppet regime of Parthamaspates)

117- Trajan dies and Hadrian takes the throne

???- Hadrian releases Mesopotamia

121- Event in game - Tensions between Rome and Parthia. Parthia released as vassal.

122- Hadrian's Wall built- Upgrade to several British fortification levels. (if you have a better idea of how to represent this let me know)

More events will be added here as I add them to the game. I'll release a pre-beta version later today with Rome and Aksum in the game. It will still have many "current" nations in it but those will be removed before final version. Stay tuned :)

UPDATE: Well Rome is ALMOST done... kinda...sorta... MAN the Roman empire was HUGE during this time! Anyway I'm going to keep working on them and add Aksum when they are done.

Adding a few maps and stuff so you guys see just how much work is going into this...

This is the Worlds Major Empires in 100AD

This is the Roman Empire in 117 AD

This is Germania - I'm using this to approximate the territory each tribe gets... the Langobardi isn't done getting territory yet ;-)

Sounds like an interesting idea strager. The full version of the games coming out pretty soon though.

True :) - Once that happens i'll make the adjustment to the full version, and add even more time to it... i'll start off being 100-150 AD... If I can find a way to go backwards past the year 0 I may even go back to the beginning of the roman empire, and forwards as far as the split between eastern and western rome :)

This is going to take quite a bit of time to do of course.... I'll prolly release "updates" for every 10-20 years of gameplay I add....

First Version Out Now

Ok Third version is up - I cleared out all the previous updates I posted here - no one has commented since here so i'm guessing no one read them...oh well...

Lots of new things in this version:

Roman Empire now stretches from Iberia all the way to modern day turkey (still needs a lot more territory) - Made a roman flag

Picts and Gael were added - made them each one nation to give them a better chance against the romans going mad - Made a new flag for the Picts

Added in 3 Germanic tribes - the Cimbri have a new flag too the others borrow

Removed all those pesky "modern" nations

If you want to help out, download and install the mod and help me figure out which territories go to the romans... kinda hard to tell in some places!

Thats all for tonight folks going to bed. Let me know what you think so far!

Nice mod! Some more countries should be added ASAP, because if you play as Rome, it gets pretty boring (so much money and manpower!). :)

And maybe you should change the roman flag to something else, as the Rho symbol was not in use at the time. Perhaps using the SPQR emblem or an imperial eagle would be better. :)

Todays task includes adding the rest of the germanic tribes.... i'm going to make them all allied with each other and at war with rome from the start.... i'm also going to make pictland at war with rome....

EDIT: I'm going to make an ahistorical event as well allowing the unification of the Germanic tribes - If you manage to conquer the vast majority of Germania you will be able to form the nation of Germania. While it never happened irl during this time, it certainly would have been interesting if it did....

The biggest challenge once i'm done, when you play as rome is going to be keeping your empire in one piece while keeping the hordes of barbarians to the north at bay and managing a war with Parthia. Rebellions are going to be pretty common throughout as well. Rome might have a lot of money and manpower....but theres a reason they started there decline. 117 AD was the absolute height of Roman power.... their empire would never again be so big....

As for the roman flag... im going to keep this one for now, but will change it out in the full version. I'm going to make an event for the switch- and the player will be able to choose to keep the old symbol or use the new one. This will be done similar to the emegance of Spain in the vanilla game. Rome went through a lot of changes throughout its history... I want to make sure it is all reflected in the game. I'm hoping we'll be able to go into - years (BC) so I can fully realize this, else i'm going to have to start at this time period and go forwards which i'd rather not do yet :)

Here is the current countries.txt for those who are curious:

#Britania

GAL = "common/countries/Gael.txt"
PIC = "common/countries/Pictland.txt"

#Germania

#BAT = "common/countries/Batavi.txt"
#CHA = "common/countries/Chatti.txt"
CIM = "common/countries/Cimbri.txt"
FRI = "common/countries/Frisii.txt"
#GOS = "common/countries/Gotones.txt"
#HUR = "common/countries/Hermunduri.txt"
LNB = "common/countries/Langobardi.txt"
#MAR = "common/countries/Markomanni.txt"
#RUI = "common/countries/Rugii.txt"
#SEM = "common/countries/Semnones.txt"
#SUI = "common/countries/Suiones.txt"

#Roman

ROM = "common/countries/Rome.txt"
#EGY = "common/countries/Egypt.txt" # Available to be released as a vassal

As you can see the romans are going to have their hands full up north....i'm adjusting all the tribes as well so they heavily favor quantity over quality....lots of cheap troops up there and they are going to be raiding the romans pretty often- unless rome can keep a peace.... oh yeah did I mention Romes getting a terrible badboy rating?

Well I have the new version done but a crash is dogging me that I want to get out before release....

Heres whats new in this version:

3 new Germanic tibes
Germanic tribes are now allied and at war with Rome at the start of the game
Aegyptus is releasable as a vassal - This never did happen in history but as the plan (assuming I can go into negative years) is to start earlier than this time period
New Religion - Romano-Pagan in the new "Polythestic" religion group
New Religion - Christianity - This wont make it into the actual game at this time but is in place for later in the games history - This is in the Monotheistic religious group
Rome has yet even more territory- I almost feel bad giving it to them at this point cause they are already such a powerhouse...but you cant change history....oh wait isn't that the point of this mod?

UPDATE: Fixed the crash but in the process had to throw out all the provience changes since 003DEMO - So there will be a lot less roman territory in the next release as planned - in the process now of re-adding Aegyptus and the Germanic tribes - as an aside... I moved Romano-Paganism into the current christian group for now since it seems to have been part of the crash. I'll fix that later.

In relation to the before year 0 problem: Why not just use roman years, ie after the foundation of rome? That was the solution in the roma universalis mod for eu2 IIRC.

Well the games focus hopefully will expand beyond Rome both before and after... depending on how well the core 500 years or so go....

Great idea! But shouldn`t the German, slavs and other ,,babaric tribes" not be better very weak states with an enorms revolt risk, so that their are sending rebells all the time, if you are at peace or not? This way it would be also much more hard to ,,unite" the German tribes for example and this would be much more historically. This way you dont even have to ally all the germanic tribes-states (wich would be unhistorically too).
If someone would like to play the Teutons, Saxons or Cimber the first task would be to build up a real state (or nation) and defeat the own rebells (wild tribes).

Some good points to consider. Very true that they weren't historicly allied, but they did often fight side-by-side against the Romans. I'll definatly look into it. At this point i'm just pulling my hair out 'cause the crash came back for no apparent reason. I think i'm going to wait for the retail version this way I can use the in-game modchanger to make sure its not my system or not.

In any case please keep posting suggestions - and if you guys are interested in helping out PM me or post :)

It would be really cool with a Rise of Rome scenario, starting a few 100 years in advance, from the period right before the first punic war...... I guess that would be a hell of more work, with lots of more nations/civilizations, but good damn it would have been cool! ;)

It is indeed a lot of work, and believe me when I say this, it will require a whole team and time and sweat and blood to achieve it. When I look back at how much time and energy I myself and others spent on the Rome mod for EUII, I dread the amount of work required to create another mod for EUIII.

HOWEVER... it must be done! Ancient mods for the EU-series have been too few in numbers. And for the ancient history geeks out there, like me, this is a must.

The good news seems to be, that graphically EUIII will be somewhat easier to mod than EUII.

I myself am already working on an ancient Greek mod, but many of the buildings I have for that project should be usable in a Roman mod.
