Just a thought...

Playing as Denmark, I kept my advisor window open 'cuz I wanted a Stability-type advisor, not the one bloke available at the start of 1492.

For about a year, advisors appeared and then vanished from the available list in a matter of days: far too fast for me to paus the game and try to employ them!

Then 1 year or so afterwards, the market was flooded with advisors: though mainly spy-type, colonist-type and missionary-type advisors, perhaps the ones nobody else wanted in 1492?

advisors are, for a time, available only to the nation in which they spawn, then if that country doesn´t hire them, they become widely available to the entire tech group. Needless to say, the AI will pick up the more valuable (or all, if there aren´t enough to go around) in a heartbeat:)

I noticed this too. At the point I checked (when an Advisor died), there were only single-star Advisors who only gave extra colonists, missionaries, etc. available. None of which I needed as Milan, nor even wanted because of the cost. I checked the list several times after, same situation.

If the AI is continuously snapping up any decent Advisors, how on earth am I to get a replacement I would actually hire? I really don't want to slow the game way down and constantly click to check ....

well if advisors spawn in your nation, they are only available to you at first. As for those from other nations...well then those nations obviously have first dibs.

So I'm meant to keep the game on a slow speed setting to have a chance of picking up advisors?

It might not technically be a bug - but why not put a delay of a week or so on it before the AI snaps them up...

When they appear in one of your provinces, you will get a popup with their data and how long you have exclusive right to them.

This was driving me crazy, too. Before you unpause your game when you first start grab what advisors you want. For the first year of the game there will be few or no advisors available. Come January 1st, though, the pool will get flooded with new advisors. Pause the game on the 1st and have the pick of the litter. There will be some 4 and 5 star advisors always.

To me it is very frustrating when I have something like 15 one star colonist advisors available and absolutely no science, treasury, or stability advisors.

I think since there is a popup when a new advisor appears in your province, you can adjust your message settings by right clicking on the popup and selecting the option that allows you to pause.

I'm basing this on EU2, but I'm sure the message settings functions are still the same.

However, about free advisors (ones that are no longer exclusive to the nation they appeared in), you'd probably never get a notice.

A related MP question: does getting the right adviser depend on the speed of me getting to the adviser screen and clicking on it?
I'd really hate that, as the MP start then would degenerate into me-first clicking. In SP I can pause at the start and thus beat AI to any at-the-moment-free advisors, but somehow I don't think it would work in MP.
I say there should be an auction-style for advisors, with them holding out about a month (since almost everything else in game is in months) from the first offer , waiting for a better one :)

Concerning advisors, what about auto-sorting the list by star-rank, highest at the top?

Ah, so it isn't a bug :/ Didn't know about starting-provinces for advisors

When I started playing as Denmark I paused at January 1 as always, picked a few relatively good advisors. An army-reformer, a scientist and an artist. Then they died, one after one. I checked the screen constantly for months, but there were only +0,20 Merchants/Diplomats/Spies. I did eventually get a one-star philosopher, but no sign of any statesmen, reformers, treasurers or scientists.

So, I started out in 1492 with three 3-star advisors, ended up with one 1-star in 1520. No advisor was ever born in my 6-8province realm. This might prove annoying when playing for >300 years.
Anyone who has had several advisors born in their realm, and if so, what was your nation?
Also, what encourages the "creation" of advisors? Simply the amount of provinces? Or perhaps your investments etc.?

Well besides those Advisors that rise into your own country - why don't we get news when advisors from other areas get availabel ( Never got one anyways ) ?
It's really just about luck that you check the list at the right time. And it's even more insane when you keep in mind how unsorted the list comes along.

Like I already proposed in the "Experiences" thread, give us a little function with which we can create definitions of advisors to look for. Is one available we get a newsevent and can act.
If that would destroy the way you meant the game to be, than at least offer some filters for the list. This way one could sort out which kind and which quality standard of advisors are of interest - while we still would have to check it on our own. But still, it's insane as the AI will always be in the better position with covering such checkups instantly.

The problem with that is that by the time you get there (unless you play on very slow) the adviser is likely not be there anymore. AI snaps them very very quickly (I suspect it checks every day if it can) - I can see them disappearing as I roll through the list at the start of the month/year.

The problem I think is with first-come, first-serve (for countries that don't get enough of their own good advisors), and that the AI checks faster than you do (and more often), so will always have an edge over you. And, with the huge amount of minors, anything with more than one star will be instantly gone.

Considering how much an impact a good advisor can have, there should really be a function for notifying us of them, and maybe a preset order for who is offered them - by prestige, location or whatnot.
This has the potential to make the merchant microing solution look spotless.
