This reasons modifier is applied way too often in my opinion.

When it makes sense: You want to take a province without occupying an adjacent fort.

When it doesn't make sense: You want to take a province that is not adjacent to any fort without occupying a non-adjacent fort that happens to be closest.

When it is silly: When the nearest fort is on the other side of the country.

When it makes me want to punch my monitor: When the nearest fort is non-adjacent and is occupied by someone else.

I think it should only apply to provinces that are actually adjacent to an unoccupied fort, or within 2 provinces of one at most, and should only apply when the relevant forts are actually controlled by the defending country.

Was brought up quite a lot. Myself I only have encountered this once: had to occupy Stockholm to take Finnmark from Scandinavia. But it was enough for me to get annoyed. Making this work only for adjacent ones would be easiest indeed.

I don't see it as all bad, its actually good the game forces relevent occupation now. Seems more sensible than previous where you could get warscore then demand where ever in the world just to get a presence.

I like the system in theory, it's just too restrictive as it is. Sorry, but a fort in Alexandia should have no impact when conquering territory in Tunis. In my case, I was trying to take Osterbotten off Sweden, but they refused because I didn't have Stockholm occupied... even though Norway did (in a separate war).

If the AI were able to game itself, it could just only build a single fort in a remote location easy to defend location, and then just refuse to cede any provinces ever unless that impossible to take fort was captured.

"I'm down to two unsieged fort provinces, all my others are taken, my war exhaustion is super high and I have -2 stability. But god FORBID we end this war in your favor without you occupying that god forsaken fort"
-Oman to me, Hormuz, as I smash their final army.

I agree the system is a bit stupid. As well as "length of war". Both of them make sense only in certain situations, and shouldn't really be placed every single time imo

Maybe rationalize it as representing the crippling of their military infrastructure.

I like the system right now, but it should be locked on the landmass.

For instance forts on England shouldn't have any value for counties on Ireland, Iceland or continental Europe.
