DEG HoI Game 10

UK october 1939

When Germany declared war on Poland UK stood by its ally. Poland fell rapidly when UK military advasors had little time to devote to this theatre.

A combined Japanese (!), Italian, German force assaulted and invested the Gibraltar fortress killing one mountain division in the process letting the majority of the garrison slip away. Spanish forces are still holding most of their land. In a sea battle outside Gibraltar large portions of the Italian surface fleet was destroyed by a UK flotillla of superbly equiped warships. One battleships was lost in the battle with the rest of the ships nearly undamagaged. A critical hit maybe?

In India German (!) mechanized tropps landed in the ex Portuguese enclave of Goa and available forces couldn't contain them and 3 infantry divisions were surrounded and eliminated when the mech forces joined up with Japanese infantry invading from Tibet. Souterhn India was almost liberated when substantial Australian reinforcements landed and now the axis forces are facing a 2 front war that hopefully will spell disaster for them eventually. A large Japanese Battleship force outsida Calcutta sunk a few destroyers and 3 cruisers. Danish and Polish ship refitted with the latest technology will make up for these losses. A defensive line has been established in North-Western India.

Germany invaded Belgium and drove through parts of the Maginot line the french line is vastly superior in number if not in quality at present. How long can the brave french defenders fight off the German onslaught?

Italy initiated an invasion of Iraq from captured territories in Persia and Saudi Arabia. How these invasions will fare is still unknown.

In Africa, South African forces have met with limited success in securing former Portuguese possessions on the Eastern coast. Ethiopia is heavily guarded by Italian troops. Their supply situation is boubtful but with Gibraltar secured this might change.

The first round went to the axis capturing Gibraltar but with no Italian surface navy left to let through to threathen the seaways of the Atlantic the gain wasnt critical to the UK. The greatest threat seem to be the multiple fronts on which UK is attacked and the span of attention the UK commanders have possilily to give these fronts.

EDIT:
For tonights session JGBaxter seems willing to take on Canada but it would be nice with a permanent Canadian player considering that the CW is fighting in +10 different locations at present.

The CW Wingman for tonights game should be able to have some fun. A few Canadian troops is involved in the fight over Iberia but the bulk of the Army is securing Great Britain.

South African forces are facing Italian resistance in Ethiopia and (together with Belgian forces) in Angola.

ANZAC holds southern India still but suffered a loss of the NZ fleet with the New Zealand Cavalry embarked.

1. The assault on the rock was done with a combined axis effort, 12 German mountain A, 6 Italian mountain A and 3 Italian vanilla mountain divisions. Supported by a 12 stack of German tac bombers and a 12 stack Japanese tac bombers. All of this placed under temporary German command. Field marshall Heinrici was supreme axis commander of the assault and will be awarded the Iron Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds (Goldenem Eichenlaub Schwertern und Brillanten) for his heroic effort. The fuhrer is very pleased with this.

2. Reports from the emperor indicates that Ervin Rommels PanzerArmee India is making good progress, and that defensive line will soon be broken.

3. Cautious estimates are that the rest of the resistance in France will fall within a matter of weeks(2-3 weeks), secret negotiations are already underway with french patriots about setting up a new french government in Vichy. With the Rock in axis hands we should also be able to mop up the rest of the resistance there in 4-6 weeks.

See you tonigth at 19:00, bring hard hat, cigarettes and cyanide as usual.

Mussolini returned from his "vacation", where some friendly and loyal soldiers "found" him. At his return to Rome the former governors were shot for incompetence, after which their bodies were sent to northwestern Saudi Arabia to join up the 4th division there. Mussolini announced that any and all failures in the Italian war effort will be blamed on the tra..incompetent governors.

We played from December 1 1937 until October 9 1939. The game can maybe be summarized with the following pictures, from October 9 1939:

Update...

UK lost control over India, Middle East, North Africa, Egypt. The reason for this was well co-ordinated axis attacks with superior air. UK lacking most vital land techs reserached by Canada was probably more vital to the axis success. France and Spain fell together like a house of cards, dont know how I at least figuered it would buy me time to clean out North Africa or evacuate my troops at the coast. Nothing escaped and all my troops were killed in NA. UK lost loads of troops this session. Without AT capability that should have come from Canada by now German mechs were unstoppable. A permanent Canadian player would probably have made the situation better. Japanese forces have landed in Austrialia, needless to say without UK noticing being busy elsewhere. The only advantage of losing all colonies are the ability to concentrate on whats left. UK was further unable to strat redeploy troops even though they were not retreating and no other troops were in the forces pool already. Strange and contributing to the disaster.

Turkey and Iraq the CW can live without. Even India, North Africa etc. A 2nd CW player that completes the tech policy? It seems difficult. I hope we can invite a permanent Candian player for the next session since I'm tired of playing a handicapped UK.

Seems Aldo is available and it would a pleasure to have him as Canada again.

With the much more limited area to superwise under CW control and 2 players I predict that the game will be able to continue much more rapidly than before.

Having played a bit with Japan and having done quite a few landings (both succesfull and not so succesfull ones....), I wanted to share my experience so far. More specifically, I wanted to let you know how the new landing forces rule (the "max landing # of divs = TP/10" rule) works out:

1) I realy rocks! No more landing of massive armies of 10-20 divs in one wave, were all you need is vanilla inf. You now need to get marines if you ever want to successfully take defended beaches.

2) Trying to make an amphibious assault without air support is just plain suicide.

3) The landing forces now take HUGE losses. In one of my failed landings on Colombo (Sri Lanka), one of the divisions in the first landing wave took a whopping 94% losses in strength (yeah, the Japs are some realy brave soldiers...). In another landing (this one in Melbourne, also failed) the first wave took "only" 70% losses.

4) With the above combined, you must now realy think carefully when and where you land, since you cant just land, win in 1 days fighting, and move on. You now land, loose half your troops and most of your org, and then rest/recreation for 1 month before you can use those troops again for something else.

UPDATE jan 1st 1942

UK has fallen! German naval air effortlessly destroyed the royal navy piecemeal wherever they found it, and they did find it. To save some of the ships from destruction they were sent to Canada and then sealion was at last possible. Germany had a rough time in Scotland before finally rooting out all opposition there.

UK had some limited success with her new improved fighters but it feels like its very little time left before the fat lady sings. I am definatley adding something to my wishlist for 1.06 after this game namely a notice that your ships in port have been attacked by air instead of the message saying that they have been eliminated.

Any UK player will have to learn how to protect himself from the horrific naval air of 1.05c to have any hope of surviving. The key to this is probably the production of high quality fighters, a process delayed by certain events in this campaign.

It has been a learning process playing UK with 1.05c and a great challenge if a tad depressing at times.

I want to thank my excellent wingman Aldo in Canada for being a great team player and a nice support in UK's uneven struggle. A shame he wasnt there the entire time which would have made the struggle less onesided.

It all comes down to a matter of research priorities. With a Wingman Doctrine from the very start you would have been much better off.

One must say that playing Wingman is all that I am good for anyway (if even that). I would never even consider to play UK in a DEG game.

Juv himself did have a rough time tonight but he also did a little magic in Ethiopia, stunning the Italians.

Canada is on a whole ok, have a decent fleet, some fighters here and there but not very much of an army any longer.

Actually, we will be at the student organizations building (located on the university campus), were they have some rather good computers. We've done this before actually, quite fun to sit in the same room and discuss invasion plans and other stuff in person.
