G'day Admirals, hope you're well. Please excuse the body-covering rash. I don't *think* it's contagious...
So, in the shipyard build list, the ships we can build are simply defined by their name and hull size. I think it'd be more useful to replace the hull size with a specialized name based on the segment composition we (or the dang autodesigner...) have used to compose them, conferring more information in the same amount of space and adding some flavour and an air of professionalism to the build list.
Corvettes are simple. There's only two options and we can just use the name already applied by their segments, seeing as they only have one segment and there's no segment combinations to worry about. "Interceptor" and "Picket Ship" are fine, though I'd argue using "Interception Corvette" for the Interceptor segment and "Escort Corvette" sounds a little more militaristic. If we want it to really smack of the international naming and classification conventions, we'd reverse that; "Corvette, Interception" and "Corvette, Escort" and even possibly abbreviate them where required to "CVI" and "CVE" so they would look much like the system used by today's navies. Naturally, CVE refer to an Escort Carrier in today's navies... but that designation hasn't been used since the back end of World War II and isn't making a comeback anytime soon. We'd be making our own rating system. I did it for my own tabletop roleplaying game, and it has some merit; in fact CVE even refers to an Escort Corvette in my own rating system, and CVI indeed refers to an Interception Corvette; whether you decide to use Interdictor or Interception or any other actual title is immaterial. I think making a ship's role be reflected in the ship designer and in fleet lists would be informative and flavourful, and if implemented well, would make the game look very well polished. Here's some reading material for the interested; I suggest a dev spend an hour pondering over this: List of Hull Classifications
Frigates only have one configuration possible right now. So "Frigate" will be fine. I'd like "Frigate, Missile," (abbreviated FRM) and "Frigate, Gunnery" (abbreviated FRG) to be options, with the gunnery frigate mounting one L slot and exactly nothing else weapons-wise, but that's also immaterial.
Destroyers have a few selections, and here's where things begin to get tricky. I'm not doing your homework for you, you ain't freaking paying me. I'm giving you an idea. (If you wanna pay me I'll give you more
) Because there start being multiple configurations, you'd need multiple classifications. You have a Gunnery classification for the artillery bow, but it also has a stern that could be PD fit if one if feelin' crazy. Thus, "Destroyer, Gunnery, Escort," could be it's classification, abbreviated "DEGE" because I do not use G for guided missile like the United States Navy, but for Gunnery, and you're targeting this stuff at videogamers not navy veterans so we're trying to minimize idiosyncrasies. If is has the PD bow and the PD stern, then possibly "Destroyer, Patrol, Escort," abbreviated "DEPE" would be applicable. You see where this is all going.
Battleships is what actually got me thinking about this. A battleship with carrier bow and midsection and broadside stern is a "Fleet Carrier" abbreviated "FCA" or something similar. It is *not* a freakin' battleship of any description. Give it an artillery stern and it is a "Battle Carrier" abbreviated "BCA" which is another real-world classification- the Imperial Japanese Navy hastily put flight decks on some old battleships because they needed air coverage in a real bad way when the United States came knocking bearing a real unhealthy amount of righteous revenge. Similarly, a cruiser with a carrier section is an "Escort Carrier." It is no longer a cruiser. Having these designations could also tie in to AI behaviours, and help up to identify and respond to enemy ships when spotted. This is a relatively minor change, will take a little thought but minimal coding, but will add a lot of polish and a lot of flair to a game that needs that stuff real bad... There are so many loose ends to tie up in this game, and this is one of them (IMHO, of course)
If people are interested in having their shipyard build lists, fleet listings, and other suches appropriately label their ships according to their role like I am, hit me up. I can generate more. I did my entire lineup for my game and it is freaking huge, Admirals.
Whaddaya think, folks?
