Germany's problems with the unintended attack into the Maginot line in the latest WWW made me wonder about how the game handles defensive plans.

So clearly, setting a goal line in enemy territory is going to lead to an attack. How would you set the battle plan if your goal was to start by defending a line, but gradually fall back (keep a coherent line) from the starting line to secondary defensive line? Or even a simpler plan: try to hold this line, but don't counter-attack to try to recover it if we lose some of it.

I'm also interested in how this works. Does this mean your divisions will retreat quicker from battle to make a stand at a defensive line that you set? Reason being once you are defeated and your org is gone, you better have reserve divisions or you are in trouble. The Germans used similar tactics often while on the defensive retreating at night to find a more defensible position and leaving a vanguard to hold the enemy for a short period.

You simply dont execute the plan. If you draw an offensive or an secondary defensive line, you simply dont execute it unless you want to attack/retreat.

Does that mean that the AI will fight to regain lost provinces until I personally give the order to fall back? I guess what I'm looking for is a stance where the AI is willing to fall back from A to B but has to be pushed out by the enemy.

if you have them sit at the defensive line they will only defend, not attack. You'd have to draw and execute an offensive plan for them to attack to an certain line, like an river or mountain for example. If you execute an defensive plan to fall back behind an river they should retreat as soon as they can.

yeah, i always at least set up a fallback plan if things dont work out and I need to regroup, or as a way of managing reserve forces.... but:
you'll have to wait for more info in a future diary, I just wanted to clear up some of the confusion :)
We can expect the AI to handel some type of retreat. But only the Battle Plan DD will give us the information.

Yeah honestly with battle plans being such an integral part of the game they must still be working on them otherwise we would have seen a DD.

I did notice in the last weeks WWW that Jakob had drawn a line into France over the MLine and I was like, REALLY?

Haven't watched this weeks yet, but I assume he was so focused on Poland that he didn't notice.

In for example drawing a defensive plan to hold the Maginot line, if you get a breach will the plan attempt to recover the breach with counter attacks using any reserve troops you left?
