I know some of you dislike those, but I feel like they're necessary for more realistic, longer and in-depth gameplay and making the AI seem less tactically inept.

Overall, I would say the existence of alliances-only makes the game harder, since you get dragged into stupid wars by your allies. Also, in CKII, it was possible to wait until you needed an ally, then upgrade from a non-aggression pact to an alliance, allowing the player to exploit the alliance system.

I'm not sure being endlessly dragged into war by the AI makes the game significantly harder (as opposed to more annoying), given the very limited penalties for staying at home and ignoring the war, and, even with the current system, it's not all that hard to get alliances right when you need them. Indeed, an AI that was reluctant to upgrade a non-aggression pact from marriage into a full alliance unless it saw potential gain might be harder rather than easier to exploit than it is now.

I am not sure about defensive pacts at least with how they were in CK2, but non-aggression pacts should be a thing. Marriages by default should be a non-aggression pact, but during the negations you could ask for an alliance, perhaps in exchange for a hook over you or because you have a hook on them.

I remember in CK2 once they rolled out having to manually make alliances the AI practically never did and became extremely easy.

I think it would be cool to have a 'mini' coalition though. In CK2 coalitions were fine until you hit the last level and every coalition on the planet combined together to fight you.

If you're threatening, especially if you're wrong religion and culture small same culture and same religion realms should be able to team up in a defensive coalition against you. Kind of like if I'm the HRE and stomp too hard on the the balkanized polish next door they should be able to help eachother out during defensive wars against you.

It would also be cool to be able to have more alliances outside of marriage. A big one imo is hostage wards.

The AI did create appliances but they never re-negotiated pacts.

Defensive pacts are fine, as long as they don't do the absolutely idiotic thing of making literally everyone around you join a single Defensive pact like they did in CK2.

Make them Faith/Culture based, and start from there.
