There should be the option for Defensive and Full Alliances.

I don't mind telling a country I will help defend them against aggression, but I am not going to get involved in a world war because they want one provinces from a neighbor.

Yeah I've always actually seen it as a bit odd that a game with as much depth as eu4 only has one type of an alliance whereas total war games for example have defensive and military alliances.

Hmm, I could see a switch sides thing, Perhaps if they leader of the enemy liked you enough (i realise this is unrealistic) or if they wanted your help, it could have roughly the same modifiers as a white peace, if you had high enough, or maybe -10 on a white peace, then you could hit a button asking to switch side. Or it could be if they couldn't core/didn't want any of your land, you could switch sides at will.
