I picked up DOTF for the morale and WE boost whilst fighting against the empire as Sweden, 50 years and 2 monarchs later I've still got it and now that the reformation has begun it is preventing me from changing religion. This is the second game I have had it for absurdly long lengths of time. Is there any effective way to get rid of the modifier?

It's supposed to go away when your leader dies. DOTF is not a hereditary title.
No it's not. They fixed it so it doesn't go away when a ruler dies. It was ver inconvenient for republics when they were the DOTF and lost the title after 3 years (Milan) or 4 years (Venice, Genoa).

Extra missionary, prestige, Papal influence, combat morale bonuses.

Then why bother getting it? I don't think that it's meant for abusing to help in a current war only to drop it afterwards. It's no war boost.

Its a huge war boost, the WE reduction combined with innovative makes fighting protracted wars in Russia bearable. You have so much cash in this game dropping 500 for each major war is brilliant value. The only problem is I've played a very MP starved game (last 3 rulers 1/0/5, 3/3/3, 1/0/4 heir 0/1/5) and it got in the way of switching religion quickly so I dont get as many conversion events - as soon as I switched to protestant I actually picked it up again to then speed the events up as much as I could.

Why would you even convert as Sweden?

And all you need to do to drop it is refuse a DOTF call or peace out *anyone* in a war with offered tribute.

Did drop it now, but the time it took me to drop it hurt a bit. Converting because I'm never going to be able to dominate curia when France is about to inherit Spain and Portugal, almost all the electors have converted whilst austria hasn't, and the idea cost reduction is going to really help. Really however the most important reason is I prefer blue to yellow.
