the functions of defender of faith are somewhere in the beta information :)

anyway it gives a bit less RR added and lower RR cap for war exhaustion.

you lose like 25% tech speed for the duration, with the current rebel rules the reduction in warexhaustion RR is really meangingless compared to losing 25 tech speed :p

(not numbers may not be accurate just fetching it from memory)

also defender of faith gives free CBs on other religions or something.

From the 1.07 (non-beta) readme:
- Defender of the Faith now gets a +10% morale bonus, but also a +15% costs on technologies.

That +15% tech cost hurts much, much more than the 10% morale helps. The only reason for SDotF I can see is roleplaying.

Or in many cases, a royal marriage and claiming the throne would even be a less expensive way of getting CB.

That idea is ludicrous.

In order to not get a -2 stab hit for no CB, you get/break a RM and lose 1 stab for that...

So all that work (and money) just for one stability?

Better off to just spend the 1,000 ducats imho :)

IF you could be sure that the nation you want war with is going to DoW someone of your religion WHEN you want them to, then great. Most of the time it is very uncertain which countries and when you will get CB on them.

1,000 ducats is usually more money than working with the relations or claiming a throne; not so only for very large majors.

When your nation is small, a stability hit is no big deal compared to expense of money. And BB points must be conserved so that you can grow to a good size. War without CB is three wasted BB points.
