You get a temporary CB against any nation that declares war on a nation that is of your faith. You get the CB even if the nation that declared war has the same religion.

This is usually an unattractive and uncertain way of obtaining CB. It is generally much less expensive to improve relations, get the a nation into alliance, insult them, declare war on a country you want to go to war on, invite the ally to war, and DOW the ally with CB when he backs out of the alliance. Or in many cases, a royal marriage and claiming the throne would even be a less expensive way of getting CB.

Nope no event triggers on you being SDOTF

one negative thing:
different religion provinces are more rebellious
No different religious provinces are probably less likely to rebel as you have one more religious slider to play with (and one whiich you can set to 0: CRC religion)

it is just psychological,
When I play a specific religion and want to be the bulwark or I declare myself its defender.

But yes, it is far to expensive.

The sole Defender of the Faith

Pros:
You can use it multiple times.
You will only lose it if you lose a war.
It may have other advantages concerning military and economic issues.(I am not sure.)

Cons:
It is expensive.(1000?)
It restricts your foreign policy.(You can´t buy a peace.)
There are cheaper ways to have CB.
Possibly more troubles with provinces that have other religion than the national religion.(I am not sure.)

I don´t use it because it is expensive and the foreign policy will be restricted if I want to keep it.

Do you lose the title if you lose any war, no matter how minor and no matter with whom? Is this why you can no longer buy off a peace?

It should have some sort of advantage. Certainly the Ottomans had a special standing in the Sunni Muslim world after assuming the Caliphate, and the Russians were looked to as the leaders of Orthodoxy after the fall of Byzantium and the idea of the Third Rome developed. Much harder to decided the value of being "Most Catholic Majesty" in Spain or "Eldest Daughter of the Church" in la belle France.

Yep, that is the reason. If you make a peace and give something, money or land for peace you lose that war. As far as I understand it doesn´t matter if you give 25 ducats or 10 provinces but in both cases you lose the war and if you have the title "Defender of Faith" you will also lose it. That title is too expensive to acquire because the price is 1000 ducats. You can spend that amount of money in a much lucrative or necessary way.(province buildings, military etc.)

I disagree. I think it's well worth it. For instance you have a large empire and are a good boy, nobody declares war on you. A large neighbor is sucking down minors on your borders, this must be stopped. Better to spend the 1k gold than 5k trying to get your stability back up.
