A province defects to you, just in peacetime as a result of prolonged rebels. You didn't ask for it, you cannot refuse; it just happens. As a result the newly owned province suffers from high RR due to nationalism for several decades. Example: playing as Oman, Socotra (province of Ethiopia, orthodox religion) defects to me giving about 10-15% RR for many decades, due to nationalism and different religion. What's the point? I didn't force them to join me; it's their choice. I think such a defect event should give a core for free. Alternative: the province should be free of nationalism without an immediate core. :)

Put an army there and convert them. A fair amount of that RR is from it being wrong religious group.

That was a bit difficult as I had no missionarries at all. My innovative slider was highly negative as I wanted to westernize. My point is that I had no interest at all in that province and I would have refused the defection if I had the possibility to do so.

Find someone to sell it to if you really don't want it. That way at least you get something. If nobody will pay much for it, sell it to someone other than the country (or countries) that have a core on the province - that sets up a fight between the owner and the country with the core, from which you might be able to later profit.

Yeah, tried to sell it to Ethiopia (the previous owner and most logical choice as it had eastern orthodox religion) for 0 ducats, and they refuse; can't blame them for that.;)

Too bad if you can't sell the province. The RR, though irritating, does make perfect sense anyway. It's not like the decision to join you was unanimous. And the defection is even less likely to be accepted by anyone so getting a core would hardly be justified.

Is the chance to sell "impossible" or something else? As long as it's not impossible, they will eventually accept (though it may not be worth the time and diplomats if it is "very unlikely"). Generally, a 0 ducat offer to any country that borders the province will be "very likely" to be accepted. Those that do not share a border are much less likely to buy, and in my experience landlocked provinces are almost impossible to sell to someone w/o a border.

If at all possible, sell it to someone w/o a core - the province is often more trouble than it is worth and ends up weakening the "beneficiary". If you sell it to someone with a core you almost invariably make them stronger - the only exception I can think of is if a third country also has a core on the province, starting a fight between the two.

I agree, but I still think that the nationlism should be reduced compared with the situation when the same province is ceded in a peace treaty.

Anyways, imo it would be nice to have a refuse option.

Iirc it was impossible, but note that Socotra is an island having the "wrong" religion in a muslim area.

Ok a core is a bit easy, but a 15% nationalism after they join you without your consent ?

It should be like in Civ IV (keep reading before bashin :p plz) You should have an event asking you to accept or reject the province.

Accepting : - -50 relation with the nation that lost the province
- Reconquest CB

Refusing : - +50 Relation with the nation
- Tag "Enemy of rebels" National revolt risk +3 for 5 years.

If the revoltrisk is still high, why not let it revolt again and join someone else?
