Ive played a bunch of games lately (s Germany) and have worked a simple strategy that should be beneficial to you new players. Ive used the same strategy while experimenting with different builds, under different conditions (play historical, sandbox etc...). I just finished a game which was the best yet so ill provide some details. Now by all means this may not be the best nor fastest, efficient etc... but it is simple and works every time.
1. I raise all my airbases to level 5 (and build a level 5 airbase in Dresden).
2. I build 56 IC (a base 200), make sure airbases are at the top of the queue.
3. Trade, trade, trade with the US, Soviet Union and Uk (skip all others) for Metal and Rares, sell supplies. Max deals when possible, don't worry about cost, your goal is to stockpile. within 3-4 months you want to be around +140sh Metal and +90-100 Rares. A couple of reasons 1) Your adding 56 IC modified by War Economy, your going to add IC by taking Austria and Czechoslovakia (fire all Decisions), and last if you max out your resources, you will be able to cancel all trades when war comes and have plenty of resources to run your Industry and not have to worry about the Allies sinking all your convoys.
4. Use the IC Minister, this helps defray the cost of using your production for supplies.
No matter how you play whether historical or not, at some point you'll launch Barbarossa. My recent game I launched it in November (thats right Winter!) of 1940. I form 3 Theaters (Army Group North, Central and South). The North targets Leningrad first, then Murmansk and Archangelsk. The Central hits Kyiv then up towards Moskva. The South hits Odessa, Sevastopol and then swings towards Stalingrad and the Oil Fields.
I play totally under AI control, and didnt bother re-assigning Generals. As your units move forward, shrink their Theater (backside) forcing them to keep moving units forward. Keep their Theaters "thin".
The Weather isnt a problem, the terrain will slow Army Group Central a tad, but not for long. Generally it takes about a year solo as Germany under AI control. If you want to speed that up bring lots of nations into the Axis. The game above I had Turkey, Persia and Afghanistan all fighting the Soviets in addition to the usual Axis members. Even if the Soviets overrun those nations (and they do!) it ties up units from fighting you.
The above games builds proved to be the most effective yet. Each of my 3 "Army Groups" had the same units;
30 Infantry Divisions (18 INFx3/ART & 12 INFx3/AT)
10 Motorized Infantry Divisions (MOTx2/TD/SPART)
10 Armor Divisions (ARM/MOTx2/SPART)
10 Militia Divisions (MILx4)
4 TACs
4 MRs
4 CAS's
note I used waffen ss over motorized when possible.
Now in the above game I launched in Nov of 1940 simply because I was watching my resources and waiting on Japan to attack Pearl and a few other things, I simply decided not to wait. I had already taken Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Poland and Yugoslavia.
My units steadily forced the Soviets back, in the end it took 8 months. Now before anyone tries to say anything about how or when they invasion was launched, Ive tried this over and over again under many different circumstances. Waiting another year or longer would have made no difference. If your techs are up to date, and your builds are right you will win.
Anyway hope this helps...
