I'm having a bit of trouble killing submarines. I can eliminate them with aircraft very easily, but when they attack my carrierls my fighters don't seem to provide any cover. Do they not automatically take off and fight while under attack by subs?

Also, do destroyers have a bonus against submarines? I'm playing against a guy in MP (he's GER and I'm USA) and he's really hurting me with his subs. Any thoughts?

I'm not sure about the first one, but there are some things you must watch out for if you fight with carriers. First; they won't provide cover during the entire battle so you must employ some hit and run tactics against large enemy fleets (It may not make sense that carriers are forced to do this but that's the way it works). Also if you just got out of a battle the aircraft are still parked on deck, so to speak, and they must be flown into another seazone (if you fly them towards friendly territory they'll rebase) before they will participate again in a naval battle and this sounds most of what may be happening to you.
Destroyers have higher subdetection and subattack values than other ships to begin with and they also benefit more from these techs than Cruisers, while Battleships hardly get any. Personally I no longer use the basic DD as a nation with major naval obligations/aspirations but I go straight for the improved which is relatively easily obtainable for most of these nations. The level needed for improved DD's also gives extra tech against Subs. Once your enemy gets fully teched up electro subs, however, you're toast.

get the improved destroyers + the tech thats in the same section that gives you +2 against subs. Thats a good way to beat them.

another sneaky way is to build you own subs + navel bombers. Your subs will engage the enemy subs and block them in the zone - then you send in the planes.Subs vs subs fight very crap.

Was there a change in anti-sub combat in 1.06? It seems it is harder to kill subs with destroyers in 1.06. In a recent attempt I just resorted to using subs to hunt down subs; which is COMPLETELY a-historical. The sub vs sub battles take forever, but the "hunting" subs don't take much damage either, compared to using destroyers, which get all shot up.

well I guess it depends on what type of subs he has - but improved vs long range stand a chance if you get the correct techs - also remember to get plane support - otherwise indeed its a little problematic..

Actually, well tech'd improved DD's will beat even electro-subs. Advanced DD's with good tech will beat even the best tech'd subs (bar nuke subs which I have never in fact seen deployed and can't comment on).

I've seen games where subs wreck havoc on enemy shipping, and then in a matter of weeks improved or advanced DD's have turned the tide.

Stick to electro-techs which are crucial for most naval improvement techs, and of course, naval techs and doctrines.

Of course my prefered method of destroying u-boats would still be good naval air (improved and advanced), but DD's are cheap, quick to build and fast moving.
