I just had my first extended run with Bulgaria as Fascist Regency, now I want to try a Communist Bulgaria and the Balkan Federation path.

When I was going for the Fascist Regency, I used this path to deal with internal factions:
  • Condemn the IMRO
  • Cooperate with the Zveno
  • Integrate the Agrarian Union and Zveno
  • Crush the Broad Socialists
  • Ignore the National Socialists (neither boosting them or suppressing them)

For a Communist Bulgaria run, I assume I should do the following:
  • Condemn the IMRO (lowers World Tension)
  • Cooperate with the Zveno (generals are good)
  • Integrate the Agrarian Union and Zveno
  • Crush the National Socialists
  • Ignore the Broad Socialists

Does that sound right? What should I do to stay non-aligned or (god forbid) go democratic?

For fascist path, boost and integrate National Socialists.

For commie path. you need to integrate the Broad Socialists to take the Fatherland Front focus. Zveno and Agrarian union should be intergrated after you depose the Tsar and turn communist, as integrating them will boost the unaligned party, making it take longer to switch regime.

Integrating the Broad Socialists and 55 loyalty on Agrarian and Zveno allow you to go for the Fatherland Front focus, which gives large bonuses and enough communist support to unlock the focus to turn communist. Even if you boost support through the communist advisor instead, you need 55 loyalty on the Socialist and Agrarian to change government via focus.

I would advise against taking the communist advisor before you switch regimes. If you take him early, you will hit 65-70% communist party popularity too soon, with a chance of a civil war kicking off while you are doing the focus to switch regimes.

I suggest integrating every faction you possibly can, as it gives you access to more ministers.

Thanks for the feedback. After these comments, and studying the Bulgaria tree, I will definitely do the Fatherland Front before switching to Communism. Here is my revised order of events for a Balkan Federation of Socialist Republics run:

* Condemn the IMRO
* Integrate the Broad Socialists
* Maintain Zveno and Agrarian Loyalty over 55
* Fatherland Front focus
* Start to suppress the National Socialists
* Once Communism support passes 30%, start the Overthrow the Tsar focus
* Once Communism support passes 50%, start the People's Republic of Bulgaria focus
* Eliminate the National Socialists
* Integrate the Zveno and Agrarians
* Balkan Federation of Socialist Republics focus

Looking at the other side of the tree, it seems the only way you can stay non-aligned, and still move to the bottom row of focuses, is to select the Non-Aligned option in the Regency Council. I guess you could also go with Tsar Ferdinand instead, but with the opinion nerfs he gives to your neighbors, I'm not sure if they would be interested in joining your faction after that.

Here is the thing about the factions:

- Agrarian Union can be integrated by any path.
- Broad Socialists can only be integrated if you take 'Oppose the Tsar' (doesn't matter if you go Democratic or Communist)
- Zveno can be integrated by any path, as long as you do 'Cooperate with the Zveno'
- National Socialists can be integrated as long as you do 'Restrained Paramilitary' focus.

All in all, 3 of the 4 paths give you the option to integrate 3 factions. The Democratic one is arguably the most powerful because it allows to integrate all 4 factions.
