It would be nice if you had some kind of opportunity to decentralize your land without working with vassals. The US would be the perfect example. The individual provinces would keep part of the taxes and have their own government coalitions with their own expenses. and regional laws. The central government could still build.


I don't think that it would now massively overwhelm the performance, or a complete overhaul of the game mechanics. It works just fine with CK3. All that would actually be needed extra would be extra budgets and the separation between federal-operated buildings and those at the provincial level.

The logic of the AI of the provincial governments would also in most cases not differ from the logic of the countries AI. .


What bothers me about games like Stellaris are the lack of decentralization mechanisms and the smooth transition between direct administration and vassalism. For example, as Russia, I would like to grant the Poles certain special rights without directly creating a vassal who takes away most of my competencies. They should, for example, keep certain taxes and be allowed to spread the Polish language in the province, but not be allowed to build certain buildings. This would also result in a conflict of interests.

It can also be relatively primitive. It just needs a foundation that mods can work with that doesn't create a complicated border.

I agree on principle with this idea, but (and I think it’s implied), I believe if federalism is one day integrated in Vicky 3, they would have to simulate the degree of independance those “administrative autonomous entities” have and how either they are completely at the mercy of the central government and can be redrawn at any moment or their autonomy is enshrined into a constitution.

They should have aspirations and goals (not always to become independent, of course) and we should start with them playable where they would make sense.

You can control this with a few parameters. what groups of influence are in the provincial government? How satisfied are the voters in the province? This is not an impossibility now.

But a corset with which the modders can work would be enough for me. Even if such units were heavily dependent on the decisions of the central government at the time of release.

It would certainly work better if there were actual parties and not just influence groups. Then one would be able to distinguish between nationalist parties and others. The nationalists would in principle push for more autonamy.

The relationships of dependency could be codified at the level of the law. In the tsarist empire I can perhaps grant and withdraw rights relatively arbitrarily - and risk a rebellion in return. In the US, I would have to change the constitution first. Would just allow different forms of government. For some laws, in addition to the majority in parliament, I also need the majority of the provinces. But I might not get the majority in the provinces because they have different suffrage there. I must then force first that the provinces cannot permanently change the electoral law. Which, in turn, may make these provinces less loyal. I then compensate for this with subsidies for these provinces. Or I don't care about their voting system at all, but subsidize them long enough to buy their vote.

Unitarism vs Federalism was also an extremely important factor in several South American wars (like the Civil Wars in Argentina) as well as a heated debate within Spanish Republicans during the short-lived First Spanish Republic.

Would also help wonderfully to simulate Austria-Hungary, or the German Empire. I would then have a practical effect if I give in to the Hungarians or later want to give the Slavs more rights. Then I would have to somehow convince the Hungarians to agree to the corresponding changes. At the moment it is more like that you either won't have any noticeable changes through the emancipation of the Hungarians, or you will get a vassal - which would be too much again.


And yes, countries like Latin America could be simulated much better in that respect. I would not only have problems being backward, but also initially having difficulties in forcing central measures at all. It would definitely be fun to pay attention to the interests of the possible local governments in addition to the normal rebels. Then the Irish might get their local parliament, or Quebek
