Danish AAR 1732 - 1751

Gearing up for war.

In the year 1730, king Frederik IV of Denmark died. With him died the royal deal he had made for his kingdom, protecting it from the vile Austrian hordes. The deal was naturally the submission of Denmark to the wealthy Dutch confederacy. It had been the able kings only choice, and as such it was a surrender of the Danish sovereignty to the bankers of the Lowlands. But now the king was dead, and his son Christian VI, the last great king of Denmark, was crowned. He had at first disliked his father's decision to throw away something that Denmark so long had fought for, just for a little money. But as time passed, the Danish people had grown custom to their neighbours and allies in the Netherlands. Also king Christian had been impressed by the Dutch war effort, protecting the Danish Corridor.

So in 1732, only two years after the old deal had gone moot, Christian VI travelled to Amsterdam, where he discussed and formed a new cooperation with the Staten Generaal. This was to become the greatest deed he would ever do for his kingdom, and he would forever be remembered for his genius.

The funds received from the trading empire were vast, and they allowed Denmark to gear up and fortify her lands. The whole Danish Corridor was reinforced with impressive fortifications, intimidating even the bravest of foes. The economy and military were expanded, and in Bremen a long sought for fish industry was put up. The Danish Corridor got a military base set up in Westfalen, from which future Danish campaigns into the Holy Roman Empire would be governed.

As the Danish military grew, the economy was slower to develop. But then things started to happen. France, the sleeping giant, awoke, and together with Spain and Venice, they engaged in a ferocious trading war against the world power #1; England. For Denmark this meant tremendously much. With Dutch money, Danish merchants could now travel the world, and as embargoes ensued back and forth between the huge realms of Europe, markets were suddenly a lot less frequented. The Danes were not slow to use this to their advantage. As the years passed, the trade boomed, and the revenue literally flooded the coffers in Copenhagen.

With economy on the up, the Royal Navy became a priority. With the aid of Dutch ship manufacturing experts, techniques were improved, and the Royal Shipyard in Copenhagen put modern ships to sea; such that the Baltic had never before seen. The army was still being reinforced of course, and as conscription centres were built all over Denmark, the Danish Army breached the 150.000 mark.

And then there was war.

Already in the 1730s, the Dano-Austrian border had been a very tense place. Both sides were eager to cross it, but were held away for different reasons. The Danish garrisons in Darmstadt grew, as did the Imperial ones in Mainz. But what grew even more was the newly born kingdom of Prussia. Friedrich II had come to power, and he would prove to be the best general of his time. Prussia was fortified and geared up to the max, preparing to take on Emperor Karl VI.

But the Emperor was a vassal of England's, and king George II was protecting his interests. But England's power had attracted enemies. With her recent campaign against the Ottoman Empire, her aggressive trading against France and Spain and the fact that her economy was vastly superior to all other's, England faced a hostile Europe. And it was France who came to make the initial step. With the English navy in the Mediterranean, a large invasion force was sent across the Channel. Venice, Spain and the Turks quickly joined in, even though Russia joined on the English side.

This was the perfect opportunity for Denmark and Prussia. Kings Christian and Friedrich had met in Amsterdam several years before, where a defensive pact against Austrian aggression had been signed under Dutch supervision. It had been concluded that an attack on Austria would mean a conflict with England, and that was not liked by anyone. But with England occupied, the new king of Denmark, Frederik V, together with Prussia and the Netherlands declared war on Austria and invaded. It was not a surprise for the Emperor.

Success was imminent. City after city fell to the large armies of Danes and Prussians under Friedrich himself, and after nearly a year of warfare, Vienna was within reach. The Dutch armies had barely engaged in battle, before they withdrew from the war. The reason was that this very nice gesture was to prevent English intervention. The island kingdom had namely signed peace with the large Continental League, and was rebuilding her country. The Turk was now in a bad mood, and decided to attack the already kneeling Emperor. With Friedrich within sight range of Vienna, Austria agreed to peace, seceding four large border cities to Prussia.

Discussions between the Northern German allies now began as how to split the gains of war. It was eventually agreed upon that Denmark would get Würzburg and Mainz, while Prussia received the industrial cities of Nürnberg and Amsberg. The Danish Corridor had now passed the eastward arm of the Rhine.

Since money cookiees were enhanced, shouldn't the other cookies be too? Like -2 inflation and -12 badboy?

Well, as income tends to rise as the game progresses, -1 inflation gets to be worth more cash. When your MI is 100 you tend to be more impressed by 1200 cash (1 year minting) than when your MI is 600 (only two months minting)...well, that goes for me anyway. So increasing the bonus to -2 inflation will just make sure the cash bonus stays uninteresting in the later part of the game.

I agree with Mioz, increasing deflation bonus is bad.

In my last game i set cash bonus = 1 year minting. That made it much more interesting.

I was thinking -1 is less worth it since everyone has governors and possible -.25 per year if set to 0 minting.

But never mind, then. But how about the badboy?
