Venetian AAR 1492 - 1512

A new age was upon Europe and Doge Agostino Barbango (1486 - 1501) was eager to make Venice prosper in his time as Doge.

Being a cunning trader and wealty merchant, new traderoutes were to be found. The ideal place to look seemed to by south of Europe, so our brave fleet of 25 warships loaded with our Lt. General Fran. Gonzaga lead the war against Algiers. Beyond Algier was only sand thou, so the general was sent to Tunesia were a route deep into the wast desert was found. Tunesia soon surendered Tripoli.

Merchants from all over Europe soon floded the habours of Tripoli and a new Center of Trade was soon established, only adding to the wealth of the Ventian tradeempire.

While all of this was happening, the peacefull fiefdom of Mantova had been overrun by our sworn enemies the Genoas, always trying to raid our caravans and tradeships. Such an act could not be tolerated and with the blessing of the Pope Innocentius VIII war was decleared on Genoa and it's allies Modena and Tuscany.

Modena and Tuscany was soon overrun, provinses handed over to Venice and seeing the wisdom in joining the true italian tradepower sworn alligience to the Doge. Soon after Genoa decided this was indeed wisdom and joined it's former allies as vassels of Venice.

In 1501 Leonardo Loredano (1501 - ) was elected the new Doge of Venice, and with him came the campaign against the pagans in Songhai. Great preperations were made, new soldiers send throu the burning desserts of Kanem Burno, most surviving and eager to begin the campaign. War went well but upon locating the capital of Songhai our troops meet the famed spanish general El Gran Capitan who took over the sieges of the Gao.

While Venetian forces had walked throu the desserts and jungle, the sneaky spaniards had sailed south from Gibraltar and landed from the west. Cleary the Doge was not happy when news of this reached him. After fighting numerous battles against the pagan hordes, Songhai handed over the price of prices, the center of trade in Timbuktu to Spain.

Hearing this, the Doge decleared war on Spain at once, laying sieges to Timbuktu what soon fell. Soon after Sicily, Malta and Sardinia fell to the forces of Venice, when Spain landed the Old Duke of Alba and his forces in Parma. The Doge ordered his troops to battle the Duke who is now fleeing the battlefield with the leftovers of his once mighty army.

In Timbukte El Gran Capitan regained control of Timbuktu, but with Songhai joining the Venetian empire, 30.000 pagans were upgrades to Venetian forces and are now heading into battle near Timbukte. Lead by our General Aviano, the Doge is confident that we shall win a major victory in Africa, forcing the spaniards out of Africa and perhaps even southern Italy.

Signed Doge Leonardo Loredano

The archduke Friedrich V. ruled the rather small duchy of Austria untill 1493. Then his with many abilities gifted son Maximilian I. rose the throne. His rule consisted of steady expansionistic moves towards a hegemonial power in south Germany. As example he contested successfully the bavarians in their rule over small duchies as Nürnberg.

On the other side Maximilian I. sent an emissary to great neighbours as France, Venice, The Ottoman Empire and Poland. Soon were friendly relations etablished.

A failure was the attempt to sign a similiar pact with the duchy of Brandenburg. Engel, the assumed ruler of the duchy, didnt give any answer to our emissary. Maximilian I. realized that PJL couped the duchy. But it was obvious that this was just a temporarily rule, as another man called Kanth buyed the army generals and will soon coup again himself to power. What a crazy country! Maximilian I. was afraid of such unratable actions and signed, under mediation of the Kingdom of France, a non-agression-pact with Brandenburg.

Now Maximilian I. is planning to centralize the power in his realm on his own person. His heir shall take over a stable nation without being influenced by others.

Danish AAR 1492 - 1512

The Danish Kingdom was at the beginning of a great era. Hans, King of Denmark, had, upon his ascension of the throne 1481, been busy preparing for war. The situation in Sweden was what had taken up most of his attention, as the nobles had started to become more and more unhappy with the Danish ruling them through the Kalmar Union. So, Hans made an important decision. He decided to give the Swedes independence and peace, in return for their acceptance of Danish hegemony over Norway, as well as an informal alliance, should future interests go together.

King_hans.bmp

Hans, King of Denmark

So, in 1492 Sten Sture the Elder officially declared Sweden an independent nation, and diplomatic relations with the Danish crown were soon settled. Hans could now turn his attention southwards; towards Germany. The Hansa was becoming strong, and with the Holy Roman Empire splintered, with the Emperor himself busy in the Lowlands, king Hans declared war upon the rich mercantile cities. The first step in the Baltic Enclosure plan was being taken.

The Danish vassal Holstein was an easy target for king Hans and Danish field Commander Junker Schlentz. It was occupied and annexed without the world noticing much. As the Danish forces marched on, diplomatic relations was established with the English Crown. Prince Knut was engaged in Holy matrimony with the English princess Victoria, thus putting the first brick in place for the structure that was to become a greater cooperation between the two kingdoms. Next target was the city of Lübeck, the pride of the Mecklenburgian realm. It soon surrendered to the superior Danish armies, who plunged into the wealthy Hannover. But the resistance of the Hanseatic League was simply futile. Danish troops took control of Bremen, Lueneburg and Stettin, which all, as well as Lübeck, were incorporated into the Kingdom of Denmark. The remnants of Mecklenburg and Hannover were made Danish vassals.

Hans_conquests.bmp

Now, the world awakened. Emissaries from France and Poland entered the Danish court, and returned home with news that told of a new power in the German scene. But there was not only surprised faces looking at the new map; Joachim I Nestor of Brandenburg, newly risen to the throne, was not pleased at all. With Danish interests pushing across the Elbe and reaching towards the Southern part of the Weser, Nestor's own plans were suddenly made so much harder; as it was not enough with Austria?

joachim_nestor.bmp

But to the delight of the Brandenburgian lord, king Hans' march was to an end. For the moment. Instead, the Danish king turned his mind towards the English court once again. King Henry was interested in the Danish possessions in the North Atlantic. King Hans, being concentrated with the subduing of his new subjects in the Holy Roman Empire, agreed to sell Iceland and the Faroe Islands, but keeping access to the ports, to be used for expeditions to Greenland.

sold_islands.bmp

Now, many years of peace was conducted, as the Danish administration struggled to overcome the deeply destabilizing wars, restoring order and peace to Denmark. In the end, the efforts were successful, and Denmark was once again a country were the people could be feel safe, and children danced in the streets of Copenhagen. King Hans held grand parades and festivals, celebrating Danish victory!

But the king aged, and so did his advisors and friends. The Danish Field Commander Schlentz had been lost at the walls of Stettin, and the heir prince Christian was becoming eager to take power, in this era of greatness surrounding his father. King Hans was not pleased with this, as he knew his son and Christian's ambitions. Hans felt he had done what could be done in Germany, but Christian was supporting more aggressiveness; making Hannover and Mecklenburg Royal Danish possessions. Christian was successful in convincing his father and the Royal Danish Court to take control of Mecklenburg, adding Schwerin as a Royal fief. But Hans stiff-neckedly refused to put pressure on Hannover. Instead, Hans engaged in diplomatical hearings with Joachim Nestor, offering to sell the German vassal. Nestor, having expanded greatly West of the Weser, was naturally very glad to lay hands on the lands between his new possessions and Berlin.

But Christian noosed up information about the hearings, and decided to act on his own. With 8,000 men he rode into Hannover, demanding from the monarch to lay down his arms and surrender all power to the Danish crown. But the Hannoverian regent was not yellow-bellied; he seized Christian and imprisoned him, sending a messenger to king Hans with the demands of releasing the vassalship of Hannover, in exchange for the Prince. Hans accepted.

The troublesome Duke of Hannover

The old king was now weakened by heart. He had been deceived by his own son, causing him to loose influence in an area of importance for his realm. Where was he going to put his next step?

Sweden 1492-1512

Finally proclaiming it's just independence in 1492, Sweden got rid of the oppressing Danes. There was no war or any bloodshed because Hans, king of Denmark, finally started making wise decisions. As I said, Sweden was finally independent and could begin it's free journey through the history.

As her first steps, Sweden invaded Prussia in order to obtain a foothold on the continent and soon this expanding followed with the fall of Curonia to Swedish hands. Meanwhile the ports of our grate nation was busy with building a decent navy which could defend the young, yet proud nation. After the conquests on the mainland a Polish ambassador sought audience with the regency and proposed a deal involving Ösel, Curonia and Ostprussen and an undisclosed amount of money.

Diplomatically this period was very bloody in Europe. First Poland fought a war with Muscowy, a war which wasn't that long but took many lives. Denmark began to invade the free German states from the north, while Brandenburg began her own conquest a tad bit later. But not only these two countries were taking parts of Germany, Austria and France too advanced into the fragile HRE.

Venice after a quick adventure into Africa started uniting the Italian city states, and on the East Muscowy and the Ottoman Empire expanded rapidly with aggressive foreign policy.

England took the seat of the dominant power on their islands and bought the danish overseas possessions (it's not clear yet if the Danes sold or were forced to give up those territories). And Iberia.. there are rumors that the Iberian countries moved into the vast unexplored seas and they found a rich New World.

Sweden silently watches the happenings all around Europe as her struggle as an independent nation began.

France - A Lion is born

At the dawn of the 16th century France remained essentialy a feudal country. The Medieval Times seemed none too long yet gone and whatever lay ahead was uncertain. A future of greatness and grandeur would depend heavily on wise choices, iron stamina, bold venturing into the great Unknown....and sometimes war.
For however sanguine the present state of peaceful calm may seem, it was most cristally clear to us that this benign state would never last for long, at least not necessarily.

To the southwest lay the newly united Spain, powerfully majestic and with able bodied and brave seamen that ventured ever further westwards in search of glory, fame and, yes, gold.

To the southeast lay the many principalities of ancient Italy. All sorts of earldoms and realms whacked it out and strife and agony was everpresent in these lands. Of all of them only Venice seemed to be in any way a stabilizing force - what they had in store for France would have to be seen, however.

To the east lay the Holy Roman Empire, a vast yet surprisingly fragile and heterogenous entity that likewise seemed engulfed in countless pointless wars at any given time.

Finally to the north lay England. The Albion of old it had been France´s enemy for a long, long time. Of recent, however, this enmity seemed to have lessened somewhat. But would it last? Could it last? Only time would tell.

France did many things in the first years of its existence, primarily expanding into Lorraine and annexing Brest while at the same time researching new weapons - because in these most dubious of times a sharp sword was all that stood between security and war, between sovereignty and slavery, between greatness and nothingness. France observed how many powers expanded into the HRE. France is none too pleased about the actions of Denmark. We believe that Denmark is ill advised to expand so far south - it is bound to get into trouble at some point.

In any case as it stands now France has awakened. Vibrant with strength and bursting with energy it is now ready to shape its destiny.

Danish AAR 1512 - 1542

The Era of Magnitude under King Hans was coming to an end. The realm of Denmark was about to experience great turmoil, and great reformation of the whole administration. On the 20th of February in the year of our Lord 1513, Hans, King of Denmark, Conqueror of cities and Bringer of Peace, died in his sleep. Three days later, after the funeral, his son Christian was crowned Christian II King of Denmark, in the castle in Copenhagen.

christian_II.bmp

The King is dead! Long live the King!

Christian's ascending of the Danish throne meant that the small breath of freedom that the Duchy of Hannover had taken, was to an end. The new King sent an envoy to the court of Heinrich, who had no choice but to submit before Christian's overwhelming armies, lurking along the borders. To celebrate his victory, Christian ordered the construction of "Glyptoteket", a giant museum and academy, in the heart of Copenhagen. In it's framework were cut out the words "In Honour of Hans the Magnificent".

South of the Danish border, Brandenburg was being busy. Together with Poland, they invaded and annexed large parts of Bohemia. In subsequent years, they were to be stormed from a league of Austrian vassals. The whole Western area was occupied, as well as the South. The situation was looking more and more bitter for the poor Prince. Then Christian acted. A Danish diplomat was sent to Berlin, offering the full might of the Danish army, in exchange for Stettin. Brandenburg accepted.

Hinterpommern.bmp

The Brandenburgian vassal bargained about.

Denmark's finest generals were assembled at the border to the Western Brandenburgian possessions, and awaited only the order. But none came. King Christian had instead been reached by words that the troublesome vassal of Hannover had taken the liberty of joining the Austrian vassals in the war against Brandenburg. Now they asked Denmark to join in the war. Christian had the messenger hung. The Hannoverians were even offered a large sum of gold for peace from the Danes, but they refused. Christian was now forced to step down, and the deal with Brandenburg ran out into the sand. Instead, gold was sent to the Electorate.

King Christian II was a good Catholic. He had for all his time on the throne witnessed several attempts, by farmer movements and nobles alike, to enforce Martin Luther's reformed Protestantism, and crushed them all. But resistance stiffened, and on the 13th of April 1523, Christian fell victim for an assassination by a group of Protestant extremists. The same week, the new King Frederik I, converted to Lutheranism, and on the 3rd of June the same year, Denmark was officially proclaimed a Protestant nation.

frederik_I.bmp
protestant.bmp

The King is dead! Long live the King! And long live Protestantism!

Frederik was a man of reform. During his realm, Christian's attempts to centralize power were made true, to the cost of the nobles. The middle class was strengthened, and they were funded to develop new techniques of manufacturing. Diplomats had returned from Russia with news of great riches from improvements of the infrastructure. Frederik never lived to see any of his projects finished, however.

In 1536, the first manufactory was completed in Aalborg. Christian III was now on the Danish throne, and he were ruling lands greater than ever before. Frederik I had conquered Stettin and concluded the Baltic Enclosure plan, when the Brandenburgians were busy fending off Austrian invaders. Later he had incorporated Hannover into the Danish realm, once and for all. His zealousness was also felt, as Catholics in Norway and on Greenland were put to the inquisition. With Christian in power, the economy saw large improvements, as the border with Brandenburg hindered expansion southwards.

danish_hre.bmp

The Danish Holy Roman Empire

Gotland was sold to Sweden, and two more manufactories was financed, in Odense and Flensburg. The navy was improved, with brand new ships, armed with bronze cannons, joined the powerful Danish Navy. But Christian's greatest project was the expedition he funded to explore the New World. From the base in Greenland, Nuuk, the bold Conquistador Aarhus was sent out to the savage lands. A long coast was charted, and several native tribes were met and greeted with kindness.

The vast areas of America lies open for the Danish Crown, and with other great Powers seeking influence in the same area, king Christian III must now prove his diplomatical skills.

Sweden 1512-1542

The Unionsrald was still reigning over Sweden in 1512. During its reign not much have happened, not counting a few smaller revolts on the newly acquired island of Ösel, and a few remote parts of Eastern Sweden. Then in 1521 Gustav Vasa became the King of Sweden. He started reforming the lagging country, and tried to catch up with the rest of Europe. One of his first reform was to convert the nation to Protestantism and to teach the “faithful” catholics the new ways. The whole religion changing business payed off heavily so far.

Traders were sent to center of trades all across Europe, and even to Greenland, and by 1542 trading income, despite the poor opportunities our Swedish traders have, reached one fifth of the total income of the country. Gustav is looking forward to send even more traders abroad. In 1535 refineries were built, and a few years later economical reforms followed. The army and navy got equipped with almost the best equipment. New uniforms were ordered as well, and two Drill Instructors helped to organize the army and the navy even better.

Territorially Sweden did not really expand during these period, though Gustav got a deal through with Denmark and the rich island of Gotland was bought around 1540. Not much has happened in Sweden apart from these things, but in Europe..

First of all the Italian – Spanish war ended with Italian victory which was in fact a bit of a surprise to Sweden. After that a German war broke out between Austria and Brandenburg, but not even with the help of Poland could have Brandenburg won. It seems that new countries joined the quest for the new world, and they are making a good profit out of it. Sweden will see what can she do to join this race. And at the end of 1542 it seems that a new Northern Conflict is breaking out, as the newly formed Russia attacked the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth..

Brandenburg 1512-1542

In 1512 the Duchy of Brandenburg was the weakest and poorest places in Europe, yet still pretending to become great and powerful. And in 1512 new age was beginning.

At first dawn of this new age Joachim I Nestor, Elector of Brandenburg saw an one time opportunity to gain some land from Bohenian territory, before it will fall under Austrian unrightful authority. And so the war was declared and powerful army was sent to take some of the land. At the same time Great Polish Kingdom make it's move also to take some of it's land too. Soon all Bohemian territory was overrun by Polish and Branderburgian troops.

But horrid fate had it's plans for Brandenburg. All the small and not overly human reigns around Brandenburg declared war against this, mostly, peaceful duchy of Brandenburg and invaded it whit more than 80 thousands of bloodthirsty troops. This was a schock to the Prince, he did not understanded where this small pieces of further Great Brandenburg was able to amass so much troops...

The Price was not so easy target as they thought, he who was from the House of Hohenzollern, the son of the John Cicero and Margarethe of Saxony.

In the meantime King of Denmark offered help with this trouble time, but after it's own vasall the Duchy of Hannover declared war against Brandenburg Scandinavian King decided to withdraw from this terrible situation, even though he agreed to help in exchange for Settin and King sent only 120 gold ducats which lasted only for not more than a month of war.

During this trouble time bad events happened to Duchy, 2*+1inflation and much more taking money from treasury hitting stability and so on...

Prince was on his own but even then his tactical genius allow him to win one battle after another. And then another blow of this Horrid Fate which was in full development in northen Germany. Austria invaded Kassel... By taking it Austria would tear apart Markgrafschaft Brandenburg. King of Austria demanded to stop attacks on Bohemia in exchange for not taking Kassel by Austria. After much negotiations Brandenburg took only Lausitz and Sudety (Legnitz also but only to transfer it to Poland after war).
After peace deals with Bohemia and negotiations with Austria Margraviate Army started to win with rebellious states of northen Germany. First Saxony then Anhalt and Hessen, all annexed. After that Joachim forced white peace on the rest of the rebellious states: Friesland, Gelre, Kleves, Berg and Hannover.

After this troublesome times Prince felt very tired and have gone to sleep. When he woke up next day he saw what he could not imagine was possible, Austrian troops not waiting for Brandenburg to retain some strength, it wasn't even month after last peace deal with Berg. No more than 15 k army, economy in ruin, man power not existent....

Austrian Army didn't encounter much of the fight, burned cities, chaos in full spread. Yet Prince fought many battles but soon it was obvious even to blind leprous beggar who was standing just outside of main gate to Palace at the Brandenburgian Capital. Even whit voices of support from France, Sweden and Poland Austria didn't stop. Then in the name of justice Polish King decided to fight for Branderbugrian freedom. Polish troops after few won battles took Vienna, but even then King of Austria refused to stop invading Brandenburg.

In the meantime Bohemia declared war and also invaded Brandenburg, after that Gelre, Kleves, Friesland, Stettin, Hannover and Savoy...
As a leader of alliance France with Savoy signed wp. After few Polish failures Poland decided that it cannot help Brandenburg and signed wp. Brandenburg was forced to give up sudety and meissen two gold provinces, income of Brandenburg was cut by 40%.

In the meantime treacherously Denmark took Stettin knowing that Brandenburg could not do anything about it.

In 1535 Joachim I Nestor, Elector of Brandenburg died after long suffering from illness, probably the effect of all what happened to his small but proud Duchy. After his death his son Joachim II Hector, Elector of Brandenburg took the throne. He did not thought about wars and glory but instead concentrate to rebuild his country.

the end, and now close your eyes and go to sleep...

Venetian AAR 1512 - 1542

In the year 1542 a Venetian diplomat arrived at the Spanish court, with him having a letter with the imperial seal of Doge Leonardo Loredano.

In short terms it outlined the Venetian demands for peace, and after some talks among the king and queen, they decided that it would indeed be wise for the Spaniards to peace the Venetian empire for Timbuktu and Macina in Africa.

So peace once more settled on the empire, which gave the Doge time to bring Genoa, Tuscany and Modena under our flag and be part of our empire.

With the blessings of the Pope, missionaries were sent to Africa to convert the pagan masses. Nearly all of them now see the Pope as their rightfull religious leader.

In exchance of all these new followers however, the Pope agreed that Romagna and Marche should become venetian provinses as payment. Papal States itself would become a vassel of Venice, thus having the protection of the catholic leadership in Europe and Africa.

In Africa a brief war was fought against the catholic nation of Mali, but by orders of the Pope peace was signed again. In the main treehut libary however, maps over much new lands was discovered pleasing the Doge tremendously. Traders were dispatched to all over the newly discovered parts of the world, all the way to faraway China in the east.

As a result the venetian income was raised and new improvements could be made to the empire.

Peitro Lando took over the rule in 1539 and already he is planning the next expansion of the empire. Where this will take place is yet unknown as the Doge has not yet revealed his plans. With the numerous wars in northern Europe, the Doge will certainly try to take advantage as the watchfull eyes of European rulers will be looking elsewhere.
