Now I could just be stupid, but given the limited ability to play the game, ive yet to fight the Proteans, let alone anyone, until now.

So I sent a survey fleet to a 3 planet system and I engaged and killed the 2 at the planet I spawned in front of. After I ended my turn only to be prompted with another battle message. I engaged and killed 2 more thinking there were a couple I missed, but because I was curious I explored another planet to find another 2 sitting and waiting.

Now if I dont "finish" the fight in one go, do they respawn? Since it was a 3 planet system, were there actually 6 and unless I kill all 6 in one go, do they respawn for me to have to take care of again?

Im a bit confused in how to deal with them, any information would be appreciated.

Not sure if it's the same deal with Proteans, but I have seen the odd encounter where the enemy ships I've destroyed will respawn the next fight.

Once had a system I could never survey because it was full of asteroid monitors, and every time I destroyed one or maybe two at a push the combat would be over... next fight start in the same place and there's the same asteroid monitor sat there looking smug.

Actually if you select the star system the Proteans have a "fleet" entry at that system you can drop down to see how many pods are in the system... I found a system with 18 once that more or less annihilated my fleet lol
Average number is ususally 8-10 though and they are spread out throughout the system.

I think that what is going on there is that they patched the game to start you out nearer to the enemy instead of making you search the map for them which was a problem with the broken sensors and limited sensor range. That means with 10 monitors in a system, you start out next to one each time. It's weird, yes, but when you destroy one, it is staying destroyed, they are just starting you out next to a new one next time.

Ah so because of the patch that has enemy units spawn nearer to you, its totally screwing with me...got it. ^_^

Also thanks for reminding me about the tab that lets me see into his fleet composition, for some reason I never considered that.

I had Specters attack my Liir colony once, had a early naval station there. Let the AI handle it. Looked like they destroyed the naval base, but afterwards it was still there apparently, even upgraded it. Magic? =O Also why are Specters attacking me as Liir, we dont invade their Node space >:| Mayby its cuz of the Zuul allies?......

I hated those specters before the tuesday patch.

Often had a full colony destroyed within turn 30 without me being able to do anything about it.....

My ships were always starting in the spot I set up in the defence manager, same shaded in quad section of the sector.

But I suppose it is entirely possible that the Station monitors themselves are being relocated to the be as close to my fleets starting position as possible.

they definitely aren't; i think it might be just the natural orbits of the system, but i have been sitting at a world for ten turns or so with a fleet; there are five or so AMs remaining in the system, and for several turns they've been out of sensor range at the start, and nowhere near me (searched the sectors around the starting one).
