Just started up a France game, and I've been getting reamed by Burgundy since the start. They declared war on me, killed 40-50k of my overall manpower (all of it) and took two provinces. I have no doubt that they will do this again when the truce wears out. How do I stop this? The combat system seems to be entirely decided on dice rolls, even though I've been using generals with good shock skills and the infantry that has shock (halbardiers I think) and even though the shock bonus helps, three large battles in a row have been decided completely on dice rolls. What do? I have nothing left army wise.

Are you fighting defensively or attacking? You always want to be defensive. Fighting in hills and crossing rivers so you get a +3 bonus.
Are you behind on mil tech? Early mil tech >>> Mil Ideas

Also, buy mercs. Make sure you outnumber the enemy as well so that you are more likely to win. Then chase their stacks when they retreat and wipe them. Then just carpet.

Get some allies as well.

Then just siege most of their lands and just keep wiping the 1k armies once they add their king as the general so that the inheritance event fires.

wait for them to suddenly get killed by that one event?

or speed it along by figuring which army might have their king and killing him

Amusingly enough (and somewhat frustrating if you're into historical plausibility), the Burgundian Inheritance event actually doesn't require Burgundy's ruler dying. As a matter of fact, it's not part of the triggers, nor is it part of the MTTH modifiers. The only impact the ruler has on the MTTH is when the ruler is a general. Regardless of if he partakes in combat or not is irrelevant.

It's honestly quite a bogus event and a railroaded mess, considering it ignores everything about it historically except Burgundy being at war.
