The regular way. I put tons of papal points and got lucky. Previously Poland(by that time the papal controller) cowardly excommunicated me while being at war with the pope.

I got bonus style points for pulling that off as The Ottomans

well... Since you are excominicated and not your cardinals it actually makes sense :p
Except that, when excommunicated, you are supposed to be placed under interdict, and the cardinals should be able work with you. I guess putting tons of Papal points in play should begin by getting you de-excommunicated.

And whatever else, an excommunicated ruler should be barred from becoming Papal controller.
