I hope that the division builder DD also touches on the concept of training times. To me it seems necessary that the production line model with its stockpiles of equipment forces training to be a separate phase of unit creation. This is a basic departure from the old model which combined production and traiing into one step.

Agreed. I was thinking of the same thing last night, Dalwin. My hope is that you will have soldiers trained and potential soldiers (Manpower) as separate. It should still take a week or two to outfit the new division with the equipment, but those divisions should come pretty quickly.

However one thing that always bothers me is my lack of real life knowledge on how replacements soldiers are created - do they just train for the marines and are then assigned to a unit that needs more, or do they train for that specific division even though that division is currently out fighting? I don't quite know.

So then what would trained soldiers count as? Reserves? Then if that is so then I would like to know if real life reserve units train for divisions that are currently just on paper but ready to go if needed in war, or do they just train as any joe army unit and then are assigned when war breaks out to some division?

I'm basically ignorant about how replacements and reserves work in real life, and how that could be accurately or semi-accurately placed in the game.

Having a pool of trained personal is one way to go I suppose. I was picturing actually having to train the division when you created it through the builder. This would take a lot longer than a week or two. In fact, even if organizing a new division out of fully trained personnel, I think a week or two is way too short a timespan. It would take that long just to have the various levels of command staff meetings with the usual "I'm the boss and here is how we are going to do things in my unit" speeches.

I would prefer the way EvsW was going to implement reserves as not being on map units but having a screen you could call up to look at your reserve divisions and activate them from there which than places them on the map as they regain org and strength.

That is how it normally works, but in a long and drawn out war, if your nation has been taking heavy casualties, those qualification guidelines start meaning less.

What I'd rather see instead of a separate pool for trained manpower or reserves is a manpower quality rating that begins to errode for some nations later in the war. The primary effect of this would not only be lower quality to new units formed late in the war, but it would also increase how much of an impact taking replacements has on the experience level of a veteran unit. This effect should be most noticeable in pilots.

I still see no need for separate pools for the various services.

When you "enlist" you have a lot more choice in what your job will be, but a lot of people from the Hearts of Iron period were conscripted.

Also true, but even with voluntary enlistments you normally still have to pass certain requirements for many of the jobs.

While supposedly better than hoi3's, such a system sounds rather arbitrarily punishing and limiting. What would dictate which nations, and to what degree this rating erodes? A country not affected by this, losing just as many or more pilots, would have a strange advantage it seems. And an inability to mitigate any upcoming shortages of experienced personnel would also be an issue i believe, as well as not being able to prioritize experienced personnel for some units, while giving the cannon fodder to the rest.

I'd like to see a viable strategy being to invest heavily in pilot training (even if the army is having a rough time), to the point where you might overcome the enemy air power not necessarily by shooting down all his planes, but all his good pilots.
