im glad that they are finally starting to optimize the game better however in my case the thing that makes my game start chugging is the large amount of characters that get spawned 50-100 years into the game.

what i want to know is HOW aggressive and what guidelines will the game follow on eliminating unnecessary characters and will it be moddable?

They have a list of what the guidelines are for if a character will be.. ahem, eliminated.

Also it will be moddable, I believe.

Read through the comments on it. :)

ah thanks guess i didnt see the list must of skimmed over it but i found it

Characters are considered unnecessary if none of the following are true:
  • They're a ruler
  • They're imprisoned
  • They've got parents
  • They've got a spouse
  • They've got children
  • They've got a council position
  • They've got a claim
  • They're under age 40
gotta say i can already see some that need to be modded out like pretty much that whole list as in this is all that mine will have
  • They're a ruler
  • They're imprisoned
  • They've got a council position
  • They're under age 30

not really no seeing as how it only works if a court has more then 10 people and if your 30 not a ruler/imprisoned/council postion then whats the point of sticking around?
Well, inviting someone with a claim over to your court and seeing them vanish into thin air sounds like a bad experience.

  • They're a ruler
  • They're imprisoned
  • They've got a council position
  • They're under age 30
And then your strong genius heir gets expunged on his 31st birthday because he's not a ruler, he's not in jail, and you didn't give him a council position. Also, your first wife (the genius who gave you that god-tier heir) died because she turned 30, wasn't kept in jail, and wasn't on the council.

These conditions are important because they're meant to keep heirs, spouses, and close family thereof from disappearing.
  • They've got parents (keeps your heirs from vanishing)
  • They've got a spouse (keeps your spouse from going poof)
  • They've got children (keeps the queen mother and your ex-wife and such around, as they may still be politically relevant, or in some cases, inheritance could wind up falling to them)
The claim thing also has an obvious function - without it, you can't really have factions to install claimants or wars to push people's claims because they'd have a tendency to drop dead at a young age for no good reason.

I think the age part is, at least in part, meant to keep decision-generated nobles and clergymen from rapidly disappearing right after you generate them (though débutantes have a pretty long grace period, as they're always exactly 17 years old).

It should be noted that those conditions will prevent your married courtiers and their kids from disappearing.

Essentially, the game will only cull characters with no claims and no immediate family who are over 40.

If you don't have the has a claim or have parents modifiers, unlanded sons of rulers will be purged, and without the has a spouse modifier, AI characters will lose their wives en masse.

He said it wouldn't be moddable because it checks it quite often and that it would be harder to check something so frequently from text files, something like that.

Culling age will be, but maybe not in the very next patch:
For the culling age being scriptable, i'm making the change right now, but it's not guaranteed to be in the next patch.
Moah mentioned he's making the cull age definable (probably in the first patch), so you could set it to 99 etc to basically disable it.

And here I am wanting more restrictions on the code monster snatching up courtiers throughout Europe, not less.
That ought to be adjustable in the game rules window. I run CK2 on a monster gaming PC that can handle the extra characters easily, though I know a lot of people run it on a toaster.

Your pc can run ck2 well? I didn't think that was possible.
  • Intel i7-6700k Skylake 4 GHz processor with Corsair Hydro liquid cooler
  • ASUS ROG Maximus VII Hero motherboard
  • Samsung 850 EVO 500GB solid state primary hard drive, which is where CK2 is installed
  • 16 GB DDR4 memory (Crucial 2400 clock IIRC)
  • MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti Gaming 6G
Yes, I can run CK2 very well on this box.

What speed? I have a similar pc and ck2 is slow slow slow. It doesn't crash and it runs but it just is so slow.

Well, I typically don't run the game at super-high speed to begin with, not unless I'm really between stages (e.g. starting as Iceland in Charlemagne: BOOOORING), but year-end autosaves take maybe three seconds in the late 11th century from CM.

It's even simpler than all this. The game uses trees (a pretty standard recursive data structure) to represent families in the game. By getting rid of the root nodes you're going to end up with orphaned leaf nodes and branches which would be a bitch to represent properly, and would also significantly affect the integrity of a game and the ability of the engine to evaluate relationships between characters properly.

An alternative would be to completely nuke an entire family tree but this is a hard one to implement properly - the very nature of the rules that keep the save file stable make circular links commonplace and it would be very costly to evaluate which trees are safe to nuke for probably little benefit.
