Rise of Japan,
The journey to a unified Japan is hard and filled with bloodshed and death due to the double infamy costs, however, not even the cowardly attack of the Shogun and his Daimyo allies on the eve of the year 1400 could stop Taira's divine right to rule Japan. For now in the winter of 1425 all the Daimyo's have bent the knee to Taira and the false Shogun lies dead in the snow.

I AM THE SEA

I am the sea…

It came so solidly, almost as a rigid thing for one to lay hand upon. ...The dream was now forming in its shape to so explicit, like a painted image in front of sleeper’s eyes, seconds before waking up.
And even after awakening, it remained...
Charles could let his sight to take moment of rest and he laid down himself from the keep, back to the warm interiors. He had been watching the sea, the plenitude of nothingness under his eyes. ...his eyes. The dream had held. The sea was one and only one will now laid upon it...his will...
I am the sea…
And beyond the sea, there where land. Not just Ireland that almost showed itself across the strait… But beyond that, beyond the sea that was told to end where entire world ended.
But there was more! Plenty of it. Plenty of world remaining, uncharted, infested by savages and full of richness.

Charles had become addicted to his power dreams… His solid time alone but yet together with the sea. And the sea spoke to him. Charles didn’t question his visions and experiences. Not anymore. For long he had thought the Satan was speaking to him trough the lure of the sea.
Sometimes he thought his vague ancestors who were claimed to be born among the fairies and elves…
He often thought about Llyr, the pagan god of sea… More often of him, rather than Dôn, who’s adventures were part of every squire’s curriculum these days. The Children of Dôn! …and the Fairy Queen’s aid for their dynasty when it pilgrimage trough northern kingdoms.
But Charles had never lost himself to those dreams and fantasies. They didn’t spoke to him.
Not as much as the sea.

I am the sea…

Charles had planned to ask about his father, whether he could give up his title as crown prince, and enlist instead to the navy. He already knew the answer, but if father would live long and happy life, the court would expect the heir to master in the arts of war by somehow… But the companion of the Royal Officer corps and other noble lads didn’t cajole him at all. But if he instead could persuade his father to allow him to go with the navy? Charles wasn’t sure if such would work either.

He sighed.

And the ocean sighed with him.
I am the sea…

Melancholy had its own depths. Sometimes they rivaled with the sea… And sometimes, though such days were still (thank god!) rare, sometimes the depths of the both abysses allured him to sink himself into them. Usually it took place during days when his life as a sailor seemed to be threatened.
Sometimes he just wanted to escape and run away, sign is as a cabin-boy for some of the great Carracks that were laid down last year in the Portsmouth. The sight of those wooden mastodons always made his heart rejoice. His spirit sang and danced while the Sea itself accompanied.

I am the sea…

Sometimes, and unfortunetly in very few and rare occasions it felt to Charles, that he was the sea. Himself. All of it. The eternity.

Difference between absolute and average income per province, Oddman?

Yep, that's what I wanted to ask as well.

I think that buildings might be more profitably shown per province, rather than per realm, if that's possible; some of us rule over humongous swathes of barely-inhabited steppe, you know, but nevertheless have quite a lot of infrastructure and development in our urban cores.

Also: Germany clearly intends to make a bid for European hegemony; what else would they need such an army for? No more appeasement, it is time for Europe to unite in defense of existing treaties!

On the broad strokes though its more accurate this way because those large swaths of barely inhabited lands are a non trivial slowdown on your country. If your development isn't enough to show your country as a brighter shade of green or any shade of green or yellow then its also not enough for your income/techspeed to be very much.

Also: Germany clearly intends to make a bid for European hegemony; what else would they need such an army for? No more appeasement, it is time for Europe to unite in defense of existing treaties!

what is this mongol giberish about? Must tell our universities to educate few translators for savage languages so we could even make sense out of their sayings. Otherwise, who knows, we migth fool to believe that they would try to dicatate the affairs of their superiors ;)

This one should answer OY as well.

1) 'absolute income per province' is a typo. Of course it isn't absolute per province; it's just per nation.
2) Buildings: Yeah, I've been considering buildings per province, too. That would definitely work. Expect it next time :)
3) Bavaria: yes, well, it would be more convenient if he didn't have DA's with all my neighours. Also: note his ginormous army which is mostly on my doorstep, not yours. Fiv: no offense ^^

But Germany is a peaceloving nation! Those armies are just for peacekeeping and... parading, yeah, that's it! We parade a lot, that's why we have all that awesome march music. We’ve never, never harmed anyone.
Well, hardly ever.

I meant no disrespect, Don. Can I interest you in a glass of Neapolitan grappa? I bought it off a good German merchant named Ludwig. *inches out of the room*

The peanuts may be unaware that the backwards European nations recently reached Government level 3, which of course allows them to sign NAPs. And like most people who discover something new, they have gone a bit overboard with it. So I present you with the Non-Aggression Pact Song. And a-one, and a-two...

Heart Of Darkness:

Auction Analysis:

There was much arguement and angst over the DG auction. So I thought it would be interesting to analyse the results.

In general it's pretty clear that the main determination of what people gained from the auction is the skill of the players submitting the bids. Tripoli, with the highest DG, has one of the worst payoffs. While Al-Andalus (Catalonia) with third lowest DG, has one of the best payoffs.

I've broken down the auction log down by the country who won each item, included the amount of starting DG for each country, the effects of the NDs won, and the DG left over at the end that wasn't spent on a valid auction item.

Tripoli has the highest DG. It blows most of it on one move of the centralization slider. That'll save Ike about 10 years. It's not worth as much as Eight Banners or Thalassocracy, both of which would have easily been Ike's if he'd been on them as first choice.

Printing industry and religious sacrifices, while both have their place, are not great NIs for Tripoli's situation.

Persia spends most of its DG on Eight Banners. Who can blame them?

What I find really interesting is that Persia chose a slider move in the direction of more quantity.

You can get a clear sense of von R's military focus from his bid choices. He comes out with a tidy package. I can well understand why Foels decided to go on the attack so early.

The reduced bigship cost and reduced shipbuilding time is going to be a big help to Japan. Considering Japan has the highest DG of the rest of the world, and one of the highest amounts of wasted DG (due to bidding on the extra basetax option that was for Europe only), Japan really should have come out of the auction with more.

Ceylon blows 2/3rds of its DG on ottoman tolerance, which is certainly more than it's worth. However, Ceylon is probably the best able to exploit the advantages of this ND. I'll be interested to see if the Ceylon player sees the same possibilities for it as I do...

Manchu Alphabet and the compagnies ordonnance are also decently useful.

That said, 3 decent NDs (one of them only being decent in limited circumstances, and pretty bad in all others) is not particularly good when you consider Ceylon's DG is the second best in the rotw, and 4th best in the world.

Brunei nets one of the best NDs in the game, a good ND and two useful slider moves. And still has enough DG left over that it could have bagged some magistrates, colonists, merchants, slider moves, prestige or any form of tradition.

Pretty impressive all in all.

And on a personal note, I see Brunei cost me Stato da Mar. Curses!

Kongo ends up with a decent haul. I managed to get my no. 1 priority for the auction - Bank of Amsterdam - that inflation reduction is absolutely vital to an efficient start when you have base tax (and thus census tax) as bad as mine. The trade income modifier is also very fine.

I probably assigned too high a value to Hangul. There's a couple better NDs I could have likely won if they'd been prioritized better.

Gold fleets I'm not sure I'll ever get any use out of, as I have no idea if I'll ever get any overseas territory. Though if I do, the returns will be now be quite substantial. That said, the benefit of this ND is perhaps mostly psychological, as it adds more encouragement to me to not over-expand in Africa so that I stand a chance at obtaining (and being able to effectively exploit) said overseas territory.

Interestingly, Kongo has in many ways ended up with better NDs than Georgia did in TWBW. This despite a less forgiving bidding system.

Qin hogs all the colonists in the auction. Taiwan is so part of China.

China also wastes DG trying to buy European manpower.

The Maya deny Kongo the dutch masters (cue curses, frothing and suchlike). They also get venetian arsenal, which is a good choice for them, considering that the Caribbean is one of the seas galleys aren't penalized on and that they are likely to need something that can harass European navies, but don't break the bank and stop them colonizing.

What interests me is that the Maya left a third of their DG unspent. There is alot they could have bought with that.

Bavaria snaps up all the prestige-boosting NDs, as well as ensuring that it has dirt cheap stability (they are the biggest traders and producers of wine as well) and gets a nice -1 rr ND. None of these are amazing decisions on their own, but Bavaria's strategic use of DG has ensured that it has a very fine combination of bonuses that together will make Bavaria noticeably more robust.

Al-Andalus, with the 3rd lowest DG, gets two of the best NDs, as well as a whole pile of other good stuff (including all the merchants, for dirt cheap prices). Legacy of the Navigator and Divine Faith I am quite surprised at being valued so low. Also, Al-Andalus denies British Merchant Navy to Kongo. But it's Kongo's own fault. (But still, one must curse for the sake of form.)

Croatia gets Afonsine Ordinances, beating Kongo by a country mile. I was honestly quite surprised to even number 2 in this one. It is one of the better NDs.

The real story here is how Croatia manages to nab the HRE for a pittance. The HRE has some very powerful effects, and they're worth all the more for Croatia having a monopoly on them.

Croatia also has the 3rd largest lump of unspent DG left at the end.

England comes in last, but still manages to get two rather shiny decisions out of the auction. I am wondering what mischief Golle can use all that naval tradition he won for.

You can get a clear sense of von R's military focus from his bid choices. He comes out with a tidy package. I can well understand why Foels decided to go on the attack so early.

Point of order: vR attacked me.

The Komneniad, part I

November 22nd, 1391
Nicaea, Imperium Romaion

"What of the Croatians?" The tension in Emperor Alexandros's voice left unspoken the thought the expensively-bought Croatians, whom you insisted would be our salvation. His chancellor was stony-faced as he reported: "They have won several battles, and recovered Herakleia and Ephesos to our obedience. And... they are withdrawing to deal with the al-Andalusi invasion of their Italian domains, and promise to return in force as soon as they may."

The Emperor sat back with an air of finality. "So... the Persians remind us that two can play at the game of bribing allies." Seeing those who had spoken in favour of the Croatian intervention flinch, he waved his hand irritably: "Oh, relax. It was our best move at the time. And besides, fairly shortly all the little games of who does or doesn't have the favour of the Throne are going to be interrupted by Persian swords. You might as well drop it and concentrate on who is sleeping with whom. In two years the favour of the Throne is going to be worth rather less than a fast horse."

There were shocked breaths, but no immediate protestations of loyalty and of nothing being more valuable than the regard of the one who wore the Purple; itself a sign that the Emperor's words were accurate. The silence stretched; the meeting held almost two dozen Komnenoi, representing every department of State as well as most of the peacetime wealth and influence within the Empire, none of whom had anything to say. At length the sound of breathing was broken by a near-wail: "But then what are we going to do[/]i?"

Alexandros sighed, and counted on his fingers. "Our armies in the field are outnumbered three to one. We have lost the passes, and can expect the Persians to strike for the coastal plain as soon as the weather clears. The Croatians are out of it. Our city walls cannot stand against their necromantic weaponry. And the Persians have sent no demands, only the heads of our envoys to them, packed in salt. They won't be satisfied with a moved border, or concessions in the Holy Land, or even the gain of large provinces; they are in this to finish Rome as a power in the land, to avenge the campaigns of Alexander and Julian and end the millennial strife of Greek and Persian. And they are succeeding; I am the last Emperor of Rome. So what is there to do? Only to face the end with dignity, as citizens of Rome should." He straightened his shoulders, and the others in the room could see him accepting his own apocalyptic reasoning, and his role in it. "As for me, I will take a sword, and lead the defense of Nicaea's walls; and that will be a fate suited to the Last Emperor. Let it not be said that Rome could not face disaster as well as triumph; if all else is lost, we shall make many Persians pay the price, and leave a lasting monument to our two millennia."

"Bravely spoken, my lord." The Komnenoi jumped in unison at the harsh, grating voice. The speaker had just entered the room; he was dressed in the uniform of a captain of Cossacks, and his spurs jangled on the marble floor as he advanced towards the conference table. "Strong words! To face death with dignity, to remain unbowed in the face of the destruction of two thousand years... indeed, let it not be said that the Komnenoi are unworthy of their ancestors. But in the face of death, men concentrate too much on defying the Reaper. I would offer another way."

Alexandros's face was closed, uninterested; but he gestured permission. "Speak then."

The Cossack took a deep breath, and spoke, not in Greek but in the original Latin, accented but clear. "I sing of war, and the man who, forced by fate, And haughty Juno's unrelenting hate, Exiled, first left the Trojan shore. Long labours, by sea and by land, he bore, And uncertain war, before he won The Latian realm, and built the destined town."

Alexandros spoke dismissively; but none could miss the spark of hope in his eyes, the return of energy to his movements. Here was a man who hoped to be persuaded, but who could not, quite, bear the pain of dragging himself from resignation. "Myth. Legend."

The Cossack shrugged. "Perhaps so. But a powerful myth; and who's to say it could not be made real? And besides, think of this. Aeneas fled a doomed city, with enemies inside the wall; he escaped with his weapons and what he could carry. Nicaea is doomed, too; but the enemy is yet a long month's march away, and there is a deal of ruin in a nation. We need not flee helter-skelter in a few leaky boats; we can gather all the gold and steel of many rich cities, and all the good families, the ones who will lose everything when the Persians come. Let them conquer a desert. The Persians are not seafarers. Gather ships and men, gold and steel, and flee; all over Anatolia is Chaos and Old Night, sufficient to cover our escape."

"Aye..." Alexandros spoke thoughtfully, once again the Emperor who had led Rome through a decade of war and disaster, responding to every fresh catastrophe with measured calm and triage. "But wait. Aeneas could escape to Italy and create a new realm, because civilisation had not yet spread far from the Levant. He and his warband moved into emptiness, opposed only by a few scattered villages that they could easily subjugate. But where shall we go, the few hundred or few thousand Romans that we could gather for an exodus? All of Europe is held by strong kings ruling broad lands. Where can we settle, to rebuild our city in peace until the time comes for a triumphant return?"

The Cossack smiled. "Once, the Emperor Konstantinos broke the Don; and then he gave us new homes, and a place in the Empire, and honourable work. Let us return the favour. The steppes are still empty of great realms; who can hold together a hundred different tribes, all of which can be on the horizon with their herds and their tents at a moment's notice?"

"Who, indeed?" asked Alexandros. "The steppes are empty of great realms for a reason. How shall we build one, where all others have failed?"

"By abandoning cities, and living as the nomads do. I have heard it said that Rome is not a city, nor a place, but an idea: An ideal of citizenship and manhood. Cossack and Roman, cavalry and infantry, citizen and nomad: The opposites come full circle in this, and meet, in the ideal that men are of equal worth who bear arms. Carry that idea to the open plains, and let it find its fullest expression, unfettered by walls. And the horsetail banners shall flock to the Eagle."

So, in this session:

  • After Russia told Punjab and the Khanate "don't worry, I've got this", those two nations ended their interventions, grabbing some territory from Persia.
  • Russia was then jumped by Germany and Spain.
  • Persia imposed a punitive treaty, taking eight provinces just from Russia proper.
  • Ten years after that peace, Russia and Croatia are occupying, respectively, most of the Caucasus and most of Anatolia.
  • See Persia. See Persia bullying other nations. See Persia get what it deserves.
  • Tibet demanded access to the sea.
  • Japan invaded Korea.
  • There has also been some minor fighting in the Americas.

KoM's 'minor fighting in the Americas' is pretty much Bavaria pwning Shawnee, Brunei and Catalunya pwning Incas, and Golle attempting to pwn Anders' Quebec. Dano not currently being harassed, and if the treaty with Catalunya comes through, it doesn't have to, either.

Also, Tripoli attempted suicide by Catalunya - Lord, how I detest an incompetent sub.
